Re: All things sporting
I often think when watching footage like that- that the taunting, the chanting etc is probably very much like what early medeval battles were like.

Religous and sporting hatred intermingled Lorient? Are you sure you're not Scottish?

Re: All things sporting
So not a bitter bigoted religous based hatred going back hundreds of years, stepped in blood, gore and vicariously lived through sporting teams as a means to disguise deep-seated prejudices and urges for violence then? Americans! No idea what real sport is!

Re: All things sporting
First Old Firm game of the season at Ibrox on Sunday. Buckie, offensive songs, age old bigitory all in place- ready to go. Bring it on!
Here's a nice little documentary explains why the Old Firm matches are the way are.
A more modern documentray from the BBC (sort of 2005- newest I can find) on the subject of sectaranism and Rangers/Celtic. Welcome to a place where football is more important than life or death.
And no things haven't really changed as the game posted above from last season shows- a season in which even postal bombs were sent to managers and staff of Celtic.

What is with the praising the enemy Lorient?- they hammered your team and you are nice about them?! Surely declaring an undying eternal hatred for them and all their descendants is the only proper response- are you Americans even taking your sport seriously?

Re: All things sporting
4-2 to Rangers in the Old Firm Derby! Great game, loads of goals, action and only one red card! (for a Celtic player late on when it was already 3-2) but a very entertaining match. 1-0 to rangers. 1-1. 1-2 to Celtic. 2-2. 3-2 4-2. Classic stuff.

Re: All things sporting
Sounds pretty awesome, Petty!
And I can understand that, Lorient. The first ever game I remember watching (back during the 2000 season, I think) was between the Cowboys and the Ravens, the two teams I like most. It was painful, though; the Cowboys (my #1) lost 27-0, sort of setting the trend for the rest of their decade.

Sorry Eldo, but I have to go for the 49ers over the Cowboys. No offense but I hate the Cowboys.

Re: All things sporting
I wast just in the dining hall, and they (fortunately for me) were not showing the Cowboys' emasculation by the 49ers, but they did show the Patriots-Chargers game including Vince Wilfork's first career interception.
IMO that was actually a really good play, 300 lbs or not. Good on him!

Re: All things sporting
Ooh yeah!! Cowboys turn it around at the last minute, put the game into overtime, and win with a field goal! America's team, baby!

Even I have to admit that Tony Romo is pretty lame ... but he still beat the 49ers.

I have to seize every victory for the Cowboys and bask it in; they happen rarely enough.
