Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
It was much better than the first. On an emotional level, the first was only a few steps above Twilight for me. While the second worked, again and again. I really enjoyed the pacing, the characters, and the fact that teen drama was not over-emphasized.Eldorion wrote:The new one? In one shot, Katniss is climbing into the top branches of a very tall tree. She pokes her head up through the leaf canopy and we see her figure in the middle of this great vista of treetop, all shaking and blowing about enticingly in the wind. When I saw it, I immediately thought of the The Hobbit and how the mood evoked by the shot of Katniss is exactly what Bilbo's scouting above the trees in Mirkwood should feel like: adventurous and visually splendid.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
The new one, yes. I read and enjoyed all three books, but I remember very little about them. I like the second film more than the first. It seemed emotionally engaging. And I felt the same way about Katniss in the treetop. It seemed very Bilbo. I agree with Forest Shepherd.
Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
First off, to Wobbit-dude:
Secondly:
I saw both The Amityville Horror and The Wicker Man over the last two days. At long last Petty, eh?
I can only hope that you have gotten around to watching Kingdom of Heaven's Director's Cut, per the terms of our unspoken agreement!
I liked Amityville, especially it's pleasant cultural throwbacks. I found the horror worked in a nicely understated way for much of the movie. In crude comparison, The Conjuring had me freaking out a good bit in the theatre. The only moment that really made me jump watching the older film was when the daughter's "imaginary" friend goes out the window and the mother goes to close it, jokingly telling the daughter that she will "check." The mom hears a growl and a pair of floating orange eyes stare back at her from mid-air outside. This moment is really powerful, at least for me, because of how understated the scares have been so far in the movie.
I'm getting these creepy little chills up my back just typing that out, but the point being that Amityville relied more on the actor's reaction to horror than it did the presentation of the horror itself, unlike newer, comparable, films.
I will say that the scene from The Conjuring where we see the daughter, once again, banging her head on the wardrobe and being brought back to bed worked really well too.
As I remember it, the younger sister regains consciousness from her sleep-walking and stares in total horror up at the top of the wardrobe. At first her face, and her elder sister's reaction to her expression, is all we see. But then, unlike the similar scene from Amityville where the adults stare in horror into the red room in the basement, we see what they are reacting to when the ghost leaps down onto them from the top of the wardrobe.
I go on for much too long about these movies; and not even on particularly insightful themes!
Final thought: Petty, The Wicker Man was enjoyable, bizarre, and interesting. I still can't believe it came out in 1973 with that level of nudity, and lewdness!
Still, thanks for the referral, even if my sister and mom have now pronounced a temporary ban on my choosing family night movies for at least a month.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
Wicker Man! What a weird, creepy film! And so much music! I love reading comments from guys that were disappointed by the absence of monsters and gore!
Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
You dont need gore to be scared shitless ! One of the creepiest films Ive seen & still gives me the shivers now is, "The changeling" with George C scott ! NOT the Angelina Jolie one ! Its got many creepy moments in it & the way I can sit through it is, by picking holes in it like, why would a guy living on his own rent a fooking big house just for himself ?

Oh dear I can only imagine that must been quite squirm inducing to watch with family at points! Fortunately its also got a fantastic set of central perfomances and I am betting they wont have seen another film quite like it before- there arent many thriller/horror/black comedy/supernatural/musicals about religious belief out there.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
It has less songs if I remember and considerably more nudity. But yeah its at least in the same metaphysical playground.

Glad to hear you liked it, Azriel! I loved Pacific Rim, though it was definitely a cheeseball of a movie.

Buckie and sugar then! I get much the same effect by downing a bottle and stuffing my mouth with shortbread or tunnocks tea cakes
