Well that's modern Hollywood for you. I have been to the cinema probably 12 or 15 times this year but I couldn't tell you anything about those visits, it's all pointless action films, but those are frankly the only things my local cinema shows.
Gravity sounds rather good though.

Things are getting way too kinky around here. I shall have to go play a quiet round of pinochle with Odo to regain a proper sense of respectability.

I watched Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon last night. I've only seen a couple Kubrick films, but I was linked to this really interesting video about the cameras Kubrick used to shoot Barry Lyndon and it piqued my interest. The film is really beautiful; it's a costume drama but the way in which it was shot (with no artificial lighting and long lenses that make the image look flat) a lot of scenes feel like old paintings that are moving around. I wasn't sure what to expect from the story, and the first half was was structured very unlike the sort of films I'm used to, though the second half seemed more conventional in that regard. But the dialogue felt very sparse and there is a ton of facial acting. It was a really great movie, and certainly a horizon-broadening experience worth having. The duels had a ton of tension and the ending has stuck around in my mind.

Totally agreed. I've been listening to the soundtrack this afternoon and it's really phenomenal. So many soundtracks these days are done with full orchestras but are just generic "movie music". This soundtrack fit the setting and the story like a glove, in addition to just being great music.

Its interesting you should mention paintings coming to life, I think Kubrick must have studied 18th paintings as this scene reminds me strongly of Hogarth.

That was a stunning shot. The use of light in this movie was masterful, all the more because it was entirely natural and ambient light from the sun, or candles/lamps. The costumes were immaculate too. I suspect that Kubrick studied old paintings from the 18th century to get the feeling down right.

That's one of my favorite Handel sarabandes, I can play it by memory. I don't know why they ignored the two lovely variations to that theme he also wrote.

Re: Seen any good films lately? [2]
Kubrick had a wonderful knack for picking the right music or composer for his movies. I love that he used both "classical" and modern composers in his soundtracks. I think Wendy Carlos' synth tracks form Clockwork Orange are fantastic.
(Also very glad he went with his original musical selections for 2001 rather than using Alex North's score (poor guy )
It's just not the same.
Halfy, what instrument do you play?

I'm currently less than mediocre on a range of instruments. The sarabande is keyboard.

you guys should seriously think of making music together, Norc can do the violin, Lance can do his Fenderbender thingie, Halfy can do his medieval Hurdy Gurdy, on second thoughts thats more Norcian, Orwell can sing and Bungo can tinkle the ivories on his pianna.

Yeah, I'm still waiting for the Forumshire Orchestra to get its act together! Though all I'd be able to contribute is a tambourine line.
