Petty's Purist LotR Edits [3]

The only thing I am undecided on still about this edit is the inclusion of the Smeagol/Deagol stuff into Shadows of the Past (a relatively recent alteration)- it definitely needs reduced in length but I would interested to hear your thoughts on that as well as your general take on things.

Also if you go top my video uploads page you will find the few bits that remain of the rest of the edits.

Here's is the last 12 minutes of book1 for you Eldo, as there is nothing as annoying as watching something that just abruptly stops.



And for convenience- heres the first hour of book2- if you get through those Ill reupload the rest of book 2 as well.



That will take you from the start up to the end of the troll fight in Moria.

I don't think you're risking anything by downloading the edits, Eldo, as you're not uploading anything yourself (as you would with torrents). But it's understandable that you want to be cautious.

And no risk at all watching on dailymotion

I downloaded the Hobbit Dwarfed Edition fan edit. Going through it now.

Haven't the movies been pretty thoroughly dwarf-ified already? Or do they just mean that this cut is shorter?

I've heard a lot of good things about the "Arkenstone Edition" elsewhere, but I haven't seen it myself.

It just means that it's shorter. This cut includes AUJ and DOS.

They've made some really strange choices: Cutting the dwarf's Misty Mountains song, not using any of the footage of the attack on Erebor.

Although they did cut from "Home is behind..." to the Trollshaws, which is something I liked that I've been pestering Petty about.

It covers all of AUJ and DOS? How short were they able to cut it to?

It's two hours.

Wow. Does it still make sense? And did they remove all the White Council/Necromancer stuff? I've maintained that they could have made the entire Hobbit into a single movie (albeit a long one) if they didn't try to add the extra stuff, but it would be interesting to know if fan editors have managed to do that.

I haven't gotten that far, but I'm assuming they did remove the WC and Necro stuff. There was no mention of Radagast. Interesting enough they used post-Rivendell shots of the company traveling to show the company traveling to Rivendell.

It's not like it doesn't make sense, it just moves fast. They arrive at Rivendell at the 35 minute mark.   

Bilbo leaves Bag-End at the 19 minute mark. I know that in Petty's cut he leaves at the 25 minute mark.

See, this cut is becoming a mixed bag.

They cut Elrond's bombastic military entrance. Gandalf talks to Lindir and then they cut to night and Elrond meeting with Thorin, Balin, Gandalf, and Bilbo. So, I like that they cut the military entrance, but I wish they had cut to the dinner scene first with the naming of the swards, because that's in the book.

I have never watched another fan edit of any of the films, I am always worried they will then influence my own choices.

Well, there are some things that just make no sense in this edit. The transition between AUJ and DOS is terrible. There are no eagles, no wargs chasing after the company after the escape from Goblin-town. So, basically I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for ideas for an edit anyway. The good things that I've found are suggestions I've made to Petty in the past, so I didn't feel bad about endorsing them here.

I had never really thought of it that way. But I do the same when I am writing something, I dont read anything, as I have found in the past that I find my style can be influenced by a particular authors if I have been immersing myself in their work at the same time.
