My pizza is going cold
Great first half of football, end to end stuff for the most part, loads of chances, two great goals.

Re: All things sporting [2]
Well you didn't miss much in the second half, once Italy went ahead they just went for playing the clock out, typical Italians 1 goal ahead and they start just strolling about lazily passing the ball about between themselves.
But England should have taken the chances they got better. Apart from his perfect cross for the goal Rooney was anonymous.

Re: All things sporting [2]
Why would you be rooting for Italy azriel? Are you Italian?
I am very disappointed with last night. Didn't deserve to lose.... well we did because we lost... However didn't think our play deserved it.
Feel sorry for sterling. He played his little legs off.

Re: All things sporting [2]
No, Im not Italian, Ive been to Torino more than a few times & Ive got friends there I visit, Im fond of the people there & the place itself, & the way of life, Im just not patriotic enough. There's such a lot of good in this country but, its not being utilized properly & its not being directed sensibly. To much confusing breeding distrust & even anger or hatred. I stay neutral whenever England & sport combine but, fooball ?

Fair enough Az. I love a bit of football and it is good to see people unit behind something so long as the ugly side doesn't show itself. But there seems to be an ugly side to everything.

A draw would have been a fair reflection of play, but got to take the chances for that and it was the final ball England were lacking most.
Plus the heat and humidity sapped them in the seocnd half and its always going to be hard breaking down Italy when they decide to camp their whole team in their own half.
Questions I'd say over Rooney too- he was clearly off the pace and was absent for huge chunks of the game, but then the one thing he does do is put in an inch perfect cross for the England goal- so bit of a dilemma- he can turn a game in one moment of genius, but can you afford him on the pitch for the other 89 minutes when he isnt doing anything much at all?

Oh dear England- why cant you just get drunk and have a party when you lose!
'Rowdy supporters took to the streets to vent their anger last night after England lost 2-1 to Italy in their opening game of the World Cup.
Fans in Bedford were spotted burning Italian flags while 'booze buses' in London were kept busy transporting drunk fans to hospital.
Two police officers were seriously injured in the market town of Devizes in Wiltshire, after a mass brawl broke out.'- Mail

Re: All things sporting [2]
Not at all, not where international football is concerned, the Tartan Army do the country proud- granted we can be a bit disruptive in our partying but we like to party with the locals, not fight them- they are the hosts, Highland Code has a lot to say about how you treat your hosts-
France-
Germany-
Poland-
Lichtenstein
Holland (note all the folks in orange Holland tops too in amongst the Scots fans)
And my personal favourite- the Tartan Army whilst in Holland turn up to support local club Haarlem- skip to 2.20 in the vid-
We go to competitions, when we get in one, expecting to heroically fail, any actuals wins are a bonus- so the only sensible thing to do in the time you have there is have a good time.
Sadly England's reputation for its fans is not so good, they dont seem to celebrate with the opposition fans so much as against them, creating a hostile environment-
And then the inevitable happens when you go to someone elses place and insult the hosts-

Re: All things sporting [2]
I've gotten into this debate many times, including on here. It's somewhat amusing (though not surprising) that the most dedicated proponents of association football over all other football codes tend to be the most ignorant of the sport's history.

Watching a few highlights now from the weekend games that I missed:
Brazil v Croatia: I like the Croatian's uniforms, but their goalie sucks.
Spain v Netherlands: that was both embarrassing and awe-inspiring to watch.
England v Italy: that Balotelli goal was amazing. Rooney done fucked up.

Good to see you enjoying the beautiful game Eldo!
Regards soccer as a term- all that says is it is was a little used word among an elite cliche for a very brief period in footballs history that was never used or accepted by the masses, but picked up on by Americans, to the annoyance of all instead of letting the awful word die out.
If you must give it another name to distinguish it from eggball then why not call it by its proper full title, Association Football?
That way you still have a different name and you stop annoying everyone.
Bruising encounter for France- comfortable lead but they have been kicked all over the park- Hondurus are lucky the ref isn't stricter they'd be down to 9 men by now.

Re: All things sporting [2]
Watching Argentina v Bosnia-Herzegovina right now. This is the first game I've had the chance to watch live. Messi just scored to make it 2-0. He's one of the few players whose name I already knew going into this experience, so I guess I'm rooting for him? But I've heard that this is Bosnia's first World Cup appearance, which is pretty cool.
Did we read the same article? Because the one I'm looking at says that the term "soccer" predates the use of the generic "football", when referring to association football specifically, by 18 years. It also says that soccer was a common enough term in the UK until the '70s at least, and also notes that the word continues to be used in other countries with their own local football codes, such as Canada, Australia, and Ireland, as well as the US.
"Who's up for a quick game of association football, guys?" "Oh yes, I do love to play that association football. Can't wait!"

I wish I could tell what the crowd is chanting. I'm seeing a lot of Argentina jerseys in the stands so I'm guessing it's in favor of them.
Edit: and thanks, Petty. I should have said that in my previous post.

Nice goal for Bosnia, and it's great to see them be on the board. Although the commentators on ESPN are obsessed with this guy having lived in St Louis.

'The data also reveals that while the word “soccer” was known in Britain at the end of the 19th century, the word was seldom used in newspapers or in the titles of books, and only started to become popular after the second world war.
the first recorded use of the word “football” in English was in 1486.
the game became popular with the aristocratic boys of England’s leading schools-‐ Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Rugby and so on.
Each school developed its own version of the game.....the association football game was, plausibly, shortened to “soccer” (OED 1891)'
So I stick to my original assessment the name came about because of an elite bunch of toffs wanting to distinguish it, was never in common use among the working class (99% of those who watch and play the game) and even when it was in use it didn't come into much use till after the second world war and declined dramatically in the last thirty years- so its use has been narrow and rare in the long history of football lasting at best for about 20-30 years out of the 500 + years the game has existed for (and been called football).

Only saw the highlights of the Argentina game- didnt look a classic, but a good goal from Messi, amazing skills in those feet for skipping round players! But well done Bosnia in their first performance for not getting gubbed and even managing to squeeze in a goal.

Germany vs Portugal today! Should be an interesting one.
I have managed to watch quite a good chunk of the football so far... more than I thought I would be able to.
Wondering how Spain will respond after that last humiliation!!
