Re: Artwork inspired by Tolkien
I do imagine Gandalf with bushy eyebrows, but I think Tolkien possibly regretted the statement concerning them sticking beyond the brim of his hat. Why? 'Cause in the 1960 Hobbit Tolkien revised the passage so that this is not stated...
... except that he abandoned that project, didn't revise this for the Third Edition Hobbit in any case, possibly remembering that he had said so in The Lord of the Rings too... or forgot to revise both statements in the 1960s...
... or decided that he still liked the description... despite the 1960 Hobbit.

Re: Artwork inspired by Tolkien
By the way, and not that this artist necessarily did so (concerning the picture of the two Dwarves)... there are ways to 'cheat' when going for a given likeness.
In the days before computation machines were in many houses, or before photoshop became so flexible, an image of an actor could be projected onto a surface -- canvas, illustration board or whatever -- making things easier and quicker with respect to tackling that part of the job...
... I mean, if a client wanted Indy Jones to look 'exactly' like Harrison Ford for a film poster, the artist could concentrate on other things like composition, colour and so on, without the added struggle to make sure he had got Ford easily recognizable.

I think the Bushy eyebrows is iconic for Gandalf, its not something that would have worked in the films imo, but there is something vaguely amusing and sinister about Gandalf warning Frodo about Sauron, looking like he desperately needs a trim. I can understand Tolkien's reasoning for changing things in the '60 rewrite, but like many of his 'minor' changes in this attempt it just felt wrong to me, niggling a bit too much, The Hobbit isn't heavy on details, and some of the inconsistencies with LOTR are part of the charm imo.

My first copy of The Hobbit had a painting of Gandalf with a pretty typical wizard hat on it, so when I got to the eyebrows description I imagined these giant mutated lumps jutting out of his forehead, and then quickly decided to excise that line from my mental image.
Re: Artwork inspired by Tolkien
This is interesting, a site pointing out the similarities between Ted Nasmith's LOTR artwork and certain scenes in the film. (He was approached to be involved in the films like John Howe and Alan Lee, but was unable to take part for personal reasons...although I'm not the biggest fan of his 'People and Portraits' no one quite paints landscapes like Nasmith, it's a shame he was never, to the best of my knowledge approached for The Hobbit), I can't say I'd agree with the point the site is making-most Tolkien related artwork is similar in one way or another, and Nasmith was in those instances painting famous parts of the book.

Likewise I think few do landscapes as well as Nasmith, but I can do without his people.

Mmm, yes, there is striking similarity. Nicely drawn pictures tho. The Moria one is nice, but so are one or two others

Looking back, I think the under tone is, we all like Dragons This one is lovely, this Dragon looks like he wouldnt hurt a fly .........( a child maybe but, not a fly )
Whats he thinking ?? " Mmm, just get a bit more fatter &...."
The more I look at Dragon the more tactile he looks, something about the tummy area & the padding round his neck ?

yep the dragon reminds me a bit of the Luck Dragon in Neverending Story. It kind of symbolizes a childs imagination of what a Dragon would be like if it was a pet.
