Although the colour schemes/character might not be as striking as some Tolkien inspired Art I really liked this one, I'd forgotten that As Second in command Elrond and Cirdan (Herald at the battle I think) would more likely than not be directly involved in the final confrontation with Sauron on Orodruin, shame Jackson didn't put that in the film, five of the greatest warriors of the age engaged in an epic fight with an enraged Sauron on the slopes of a blood drenched half exploded Volcano, his over the top action scenes might have benefited it...
He has a rather impressive looking gallery;

Just to quibble.... The dock in that picture looks extremely 20th century to me.
Pilings like the ones shown in the background require a large pile-driver similar to a hammer well-drilling rig. It looks something like a giant guillotine on a big barge. An engine is used to lift a sliding weight weighing half a ton or more up the scaffold and then drop it hundreds of times. I don't think this was a standard technique until the late 19th century. Until that time it was normal to build piers and docks out of stones the way they'd been done for thousands of years.
Also the planks look mechanically sawed, like you see from large industrial mills in times when planks are cheap. When each plank was sawed by hand or with a small waterwheel mill, people usually didn't use them quite so casually.

Re: Artwork inspired by Tolkien
That's really interesting, Dave. I'd never really thought about the matter. How did people like the Venetian get their ... tree trunks, I think it was, into the water though? I'd imagined Lake-town as similar to Venice but on a much smaller scale, but it's been a long time since I last did much reading about Venice.
Re: Artwork inspired by Tolkien
That's a good question Eldo!
I suspect the pilings in question are more like the size of fenceposts and were put down in a similar fashion, then driven by hand with a sledgehammer to set them. I've put down a lot of posts like this in the ponds and bogs here. That's a standard way to build a cribbing wall to keep a pond bank from sloughing.
From what I understand, the pilings in Venice are placed side by side like a submerged palisade, then a footing wall built on top of them to support the building.
A quick google seems to confirm this: http://theapprenticeandthejourneyman.com/2011/04/17/how-venice-italy-was-built-on-a-foundation-of-wood/

Upon visiting Venice Italy with all its canals the woodworker in me became very curious as to how the building foundations were created. I also became inquisitive about the construction techniques of this old city along the Adriatic Sea. The city of Venice is made up of 117 islands that are linked together by water canals, numerous small bridges, as well as 3 large bridges of the Grand Canal. Venice is loaded with buildings of beautiful architecture that date back to the middle of the first millenium A.D. These buildings of grandeur are still very well preserved. So, what type of foundation supports this city built upon a lagoon? The simple answer is…wood.
Venice history dates back many years when people sought refuge. These people built upon the lagoon for safety from being attacked. In the lagoon there a collection of small island of rock and mud and it was here that these people started driving wood pilings into the mud and sand and into clay. The wood pilings became the initial foundation. However, there is another question to be answered. Where did the wood come from as Venice did not did have any forest? The wood was gathered in forest far away in the mountains of Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro. The timber was then transported by water to Venice.
Yet, wood rots. How could the Venetians use vertical wood pilings in the salt water for a foundations system without the wood rotting? The wood is not exposed to oxygen as it is submerged in the water and mud and as a result it does not rot. In fact the wood becomes petrified due to a constant flow of mineral rich water around and through it. As a result the wood becomes a hardened stone-like structure.
Once the all wood pilings are driven side by side into the mud of the lagoon as the initial foundation, they are then cut level where horizontal timber are laid. A stone foundation is then placed on top of the horizontal timbers. From there the building is built using wood framing techniques or brick. Who would ever have thought that the city of Venice with all its canals and gondolas was built on a foundation of wood?

Re: Artwork inspired by Tolkien
that's interesting, I always assumed the wood would rot too, and I wondered how on earth they would repair them, but I guess they don't need to. maybe its even seismic proof as well. I don't know anything about architecture but perhaps in the event of an earthquake the wood moves like those super technical Japanese building and absorbs the shaking, being more flexible than stone. maybe this is not correct but we had a little earthquake today and it got me thinking.

Re: Artwork inspired by Tolkien
Nice enough Glorfindel. But depicting Tolkien's Elves is tough, and even the artist him/herself notes...
The artists references the Fall of Gondolin text so I guess chose to make the demon much bigger than described in that text. To me though, it looks a bit like the Balrog is itself breaking, as if it's made of stone. Maybe it's just me; it's supposed to be stone falling around the demon, I guess.
Anyway, despite the arguable Tildatude and certain liberties with the text, nice cloakery and windy hair!
Hmm...i've tried to depict Glorfindel as i imagine him, but i guess i'm failed. (He looks like Tilda Swinton in strange pose)
