Re: Sherlock - BBC [2]
There is probably not one single thing you could do worse than that in betraying the original character.
Watson explains it perfectly in the books- for Holmes its about trust- love and other emotions are fine to study as cause and motivations in others but not to experience. Because if he experiences them he knows emotions cloud judgement and actions, and therefore if he is having such emotions his own judgment can no longer be trusted. And not being able to trust his mind to make rational, clinical judgements is Holmes personal nightmare.

You could see that as just purely clinical planning.
He does what he has to do accomplishing several things- he takes himself off the radar for a while after his recent fame causing him problems. He rids himself of Moriarty. He removes danger from those associated with him. He does this even knowing the plan will cause great emotional pain to those who care for him. And he probably even used that with Molly to get her to aid him in the deception. It could be seen as being very cold and not based on real emotion at all but a lack of it. And that the emotion he displays is all faked to achieve an effect in others.

The theme song came on and my spine got tingly as all my memories of watching the first two series together (while series two was airing in the UK) came back at once. I can't wait for Series 3!

sherlockology wrote:So, what did you think about the first trailer for Sherlock Series Three?
The teaser, featuring Una Stubbs, Rupert Graves, Mark Gatiss, Louise Brealey, Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch runs for 25 seconds but features no actual footage from the third series itself.
It is instead an original creation by director Jason Thomson of Red Bee Media, who has created numerous original promotional trailers for the BBC. That said, it does hint at the major dramatic crux of the start of the third series - the inevitable reunion of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, after Sherlock faked his death at the conclusion of The Reichenbach Fall.
And yes, that is a striking new look for John too, don't you think?
As you may notice, the trailer also carries no airdate for Sherlock Series Three in the UK. While the rough area that Sherlock may be broadcast in will become clearer in the months ahead, the actual definite date cannot be set until the completed episodes have been delivered to the BBC by Hartswood Films, so at the moment any dates you see online continue to be mere speculation.
We were informed in advance by the BBC of the intent to run a promotional trailer at the conclusion of the repeat airing of The Reichenbach Fall, and so with the blessing of Sherlock producer Sue Vertue devised a simple and mysterious countdown campaign to run across our social media sites. We launched with five pictures from Monday, with the expectation that it would countdown to the number 1 on Friday - instead, the final image revealed the time that The Reichenbach Fall would air at 20:30BST, in a deliberate confounding of those expectations. Still, it's better than waiting an extra day!
The campaign was entirely our own creation, with no involvement with the BBC itself, so what took us by surprise was the gigantic response everyone had to it, particularly the hashtag #SherlockR3VEALED, which ended up taking on a life of its own and (at the time of writing) has now surpassed over 12 million unique viewers worldwide on Twitter alone! That's a lot of Sherlock fans!
We're sorry we couldn't really answer questions during the week (due to various issues of confidentiality) but we hope the brilliant teaser trailer is reward enough for the five days of guessing and speculation everyone has been taking part in using the hashtag. And we've a funny feeling #SherlockR3VEALED may return in some form in the future, so stay tuned!
