ARMITAGE: Yeah, I was. In the book, when Thorin calls Gandalf– I think he calls him ‘Master Wizard’ or something. He uses a term which suggests that Thorin’s even older than Gandalf, which is crazy. But yeah, it did– We played around with making him move much more slowly and speak differently. But actually, if you want that kind of character, then you cast an older man. But I think they needed him to be, and we– Well, I needed him to be heroic on the battlefield and somebody that still has a potential to rise to that state of brilliance on a battlefield, even though it’s like– He’s like a flame that’s fluttering, and has nearly been extinguished, but it has the potential to re-ignite. It’s like a dying flame when you first meet him, but he still has to be a flame. It’s something I’ve struggled with in creating the role, but then you get on with it.

Jackson wanted an Aragorn type character so we threw the book out and did it.

I feel theres to much emphasis been put on Thorin. In the book I felt the Dwarves were roughly equal but Thorin having slightly just the edge, mainly cos he is last in the line of royalty & is duty bound. I dont get that feel from the film. Hes been elevated up to some hero status like a God who's finding his feet. Its been drawn slowly away from Bilbo & has become the "Thorin & Bilbo Show", with Thorin being the main guy & Bilbo being his side kick. Bit like "Abbott & Costello".

ARMITAGE: The real height of Thorin is five-foot-two, so actually he’s not really that short. I think most five-foot-two people would be quite offended if they were to be called dwarves.

Yeah, so five-foot-two. And I think I’m sort of– They put lifts in my shoes because they wanted Thorin to be half an inch taller than Dwalin, so actually they made me slightly taller. But what’s really crazy about it is that when you’ve got all the gear on, the padding, the costume, you feel bigger than your real self, so mentally, I’ve been walking around for the last year as a bigger version of– It’s like a giant version of yourself, and then they shrink it down. But it’s not until you see it shrunk down that you think, actually– Yeah, it’s just a connection that you make in your head, ’cause you’re bigger than everyone, and heavier. But I think that’s not a bad thing, that we haven’t been playing small people.

I wonder where PJ and Co. came up with the heights for Bilbo and the dwarves, because it clearly wasn't the book.

Im 5ft 2", but I class myself as a Hobbit, nicer people ! lol. Plus I do have one,hairy big toe, but NOT a beard !

I think Gimli and Gloin were rare dwarves that had proper beards in Jackson's world.

Maybe all Pj's dwarves except Gimli and Gloin are actually women!

The next installment of "The Hobbit" isn't out until December; however, you can get a sneak peek of the film this weekend.
Sunday, March 24 at 3 p.m. ET, Peter Jackson will be hosting a first look at "The Desolation of Smaug" at hobbit.com/sneak .
The live event will also include a live Q&A with Jackson and fans.
However, the only way you can gain access to the event is through a 12-digit code that comes inside the purchase of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" Blu-ray pack out today.

We took a look at the bonus content on the Blu-ray and for a nearly three-hour long film, there aren't any deleted or extended scenes.
Other than the ability to get a sneak peek at the next film in the trilogy, it's a pretty barebones special features disc.

buying anything except EE is a boneheaded move. Though given the dramatic loss of quality between LotR and TH I sort of wonder if I'll even do THAT.

exactomundo. its the EE for me if at all. I dont have a dvd player yet. those poor kids, why do they let the studio milk their last pennies? havent we spent enough on tickets.

i am so tempted to buy u a dvd-player and ship it in the mail to u.

i can understand having no TV (like signal and shit, like channels) because we did that for some months.. (but you have to pay taxes to even own a tv here, so we didn't earn any miney on it or anything so we bought the new signal shit) BUT NOT HAVE A DVD PLAYER!
