And if they had built the Shire in rural England- which still does exist here and there- it would have been just as real and looked a lot closer to how Tokien was envisiging the land he was describing.

yeah, i was not talking about the shire, i was talking about the rest of middle earth.
Re: The Hobbit on home video
England- Shire/Bree
southern scotland- brown lands/weather hills/trollshaws
Switzerland for rivendell/Misty Mountains/Dimrill Dale.
Romania for Lothlorien.
Danube for the Anduin.
Austria for Rohan.
Italy for Gondor/Pellanor.
Iceland-Mordor/Mts of Shadow
Those are the sort of lines I'd be thinking along to make it in an ideal world.

Re: The Hobbit on home video
Yeah Crotia and Bavaria would fit nicely Mrs Figg- making the point I feel that Europe- given it is geographically in the same place as northern ME- would in fact have been even better and more sutable than shooting it all in one country- no matter how diverse it seems, some things stay the same- fauna, lighting ect.

Re: The Hobbit on home video
actually, I kind of liked the otherworldly aspect that New Zealand gave LoTR. Made it feel more like a fantasy world.

Re: The Hobbit on home video
I think thats part of my problem with it- Tolkien wasnt writting a fantastical work from his point of view, he was writing a history. I'd prefer my ME as real and as solid as possible- splendid, magnificant even but recognisable as the northern continent of that world roughly where europe is today- that is where Tolkien himself places his story afterall.

Re: The Hobbit on home video
well, new zealand feels real to me, and there is something wild and un-touched by it that make me truly believe it I can sort see ur point on the shire, but not the rest, maybe Gondor, but i think they did a good job of Gondor i NZ too.
Re: The Hobbit on home video
I agree NZ is very beautiful and I never once felt it was the Southern Hemisphere In LOTR, The Hobbit I am not so sure. That forest Gandalf and Radagast meet in is definately tropical, it looks like something from Legend of the Seeker rather than ME.
