2nd Annual Dark Planet Day Challenge

Those who have been posting here for at least a year may remember our celebrations of the first annual Dark Planet Day last year. The most successful part of the celebrations was the Forumshire fanfic challenge. We had a lot of people contribute artwork and written stories, with Kafria and Petty writing quite lengthy stories that continued long after Dark Planet Day itself.

We have been fortunate to see a significant growth both in the Forumshire community in general and in the Creative Corner specifically. We have a lot of creative people who have posted stories and artwork in the past year, many of whom are still posting stuff now. Last year the theme of the challenge was to write a story about the invasion of Old Forumshire by the Dark Planet. This year the theme is:

Forumshire Festivities
The people of Forumshire have gathered for another one of their notorious picnics in celebration of Dark Planet Day. People from all over have gathered together for the party, but beneath the surface not all is as it seems.

The most fun part of last year's challenge (at least for me) was seeing how different people took the idea in very different directions, so the prompt is deliberately vague. I'd love to see whatever people come up with, regardless of what sort of story (or art) they come up with. Dark Planet Day is February 11, but if you want to start posting your story early or continue afterwards I don't think anyone would complain.

Eldo, as per the aforementioned growth community members in the last year, perhaps you should either explain Dark Planet Day or post a link to one or two of the several explanations of what happened on that dark day.

Having been absent myself during that time period I remember how helpful it was to get briefed.

I remember waking up on a Friday morning and seeing nothing but a 404 error for the forum. It was not immediately apparent what had happened or if we'd ever see our old posts again. After quite a bit of frantic e-mailing back and forth with the people who had shared their e-mail addresses with each other, GB suggested I set up a page on my blog where we could talk in the comments section. We then decided to make a new forum free of the Planet Tolkien rules, which we worried would stifle many of our favorite aspects of Forumshire. I was somewhat familiar with forum software and hosting so I picked Forumotion and set up this place at like 4 AM. It's changed quite a bit since then; for example, the nifty banner and color scheme were put together by Baingil several months later.

For an in-character look at the events, some of the stories from last year's Dark Planet Day challenge (see the OP for the link) go into quite a bit of detail.

Yeah, I don't think anyone has heard from Ady since. He's probably still chilling on an island in the Caribbean with his ill-gotten riches.

Periodically someone will suggest that I had something to do with the sale since I ended up replacing Ady as Admin but I can assure you that such rumors are baseless.

As I am sure are the rumours of your tower being full of gold and jools from tax dodges and that you have a luxury tower on a caribean island.

Petty, please. Give me some credit.
