Re: Epic Hobbit music video
Elena the Elf certainlt rolled them nicely, actually better than i ever bother to do.
Re: Epic Hobbit music video
She's singing. If you do that in every day conversation in America, people will begin to edge away from you. unless you're foreign.

Thought experiment. It would be seen as pretentious, like polishing a rolex every time you talk to someone.

Sorry Halfwise, I've got a dissenting point of view. I find a well-rolled R to be as attractive as a well shaped elf-ear.

Re: Epic Hobbit music video
It's not a matter of attractive, it's a matter of how you'd react if someone born and raised in America started rolling R's in everyday conversation.

Re: Epic Hobbit music video
Thought experiments aside, I can think of some born-and-raised Americans who grew up speaking Spanish at home. To my ear their accent is quite pleasant despite the occasionally trilled R's, or more likely because of them.
I think it would only be out of place if it was noticeably artificial, like when surfer dudes from the mainland try to talk Hawaiian Pidgin. Poseurs!

Re: Epic Hobbit music video
That's what I'm talking about. Somebody with an American accent rolling their R's.

Ah, but the question is which American accent, isn't it?

That's an increasingly valid point!

Well, it just so happens that my vocal coach is a French, ex-Opera singer and he has taught me the pronunciation for my Italian, Latin and Czech Opera Arias. I am working on a German Opera right now. I sure hope, for Halfwise's sake, I get my rolling Rs right.

Oh I love your rolling R's Elena....I'm just protective of your health. I'm sure your vocal coach is very careful and has the ambulance on speed dial....
Czech opera? Post it!

Not your r's you need to worry about then, its all those throat noises and 'ch' sounds- very like Scottish (same language root). Try not to sprain anything or drown in your own saliva!

Re: Epic Hobbit music video
Is it really the same language root? hmm....Gauls - Gallic - Gaelic....great Scott! They are the same!
While reading up on this I came across a great quote from Marcellinus concerning Gallic warriors:
"...A whole troup of foreigners would not be able to withstand a single Gaul if he called his wife to his assistance..."
I think this meshes quite well with your portrait of Scottish women, Petty.

He also described Gauls as insolent and quarrelsome. That was 2000 years ago....

Water Nymph singing in Czech

In this video I sing "Song to the Moon" from "Rusalka". In the story the song is sung by a water nymph so we went out to a nearby lake to film the footage. We also caught great footage of a full moon with clouds passing it from our back yard. Then edited them all together.
Story: Three wood-sprites tease the Water-Goblin, ruler of the lake. Rusalka, the Water-Goblin's daughter, tells her father she has fallen in love with a human Prince who comes to hunt around the lake, and she wants to become human to embrace him. He tells her it is a bad idea, but nonetheless steers her to a witch, Ježibaba, for assistance. Rusalka sings her Song to the Moon, asking it to tell the Prince of her love.

nice!
You're looking very plaintive and melancholy in that. Did you do it against a green screen? Do you like have camera crews following you around just waiting for you to burst into song?

Why thank you Norc. (blushing)
I thought you guys might have fun with one of my Vlogs. I show many behind the scenes shots of the making of my videos and the LOTR one is covered in this episode. It's not always as easy as it looks. Have fun!
