Yum!! Love salmon! But even better - eggs hemingway, which is smoked salmon, spinach and poached egg on buttery toast, topped with hollandaise sauce and cracked pepper. Mmmmmmmm...
The mister wants to go see The Hobbit too - I've known him for years and years and never even knew he loved Lord of the Rings! So we can take turns - I'll babysit while he goes and he can babysit while I go. Would be nice if we could experience it together but oh well.
Friends just came back from seeing it, they said it was brilliant. Had a mad chat with one of them about the Bakshi cartoon (he's 15, I didn't even know that anyone born after the 80s had seen it ).

Can anyone shed any light on why the elves were assembled on the slopes above Dale?
It looked like Sitting Bull and the Sioux about to sweep down on the 7th Cavalry.

I should like to find that out too. One of the worst parts of the film in my opinion

I think Jackson is trying to build up the feud between Thorin and Thranduil. Maybe to add tension or something dumb for when the two meet.widfara wrote:Can anyone shed any light on why the elves were assembled on the slopes above Dale?

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
If I were an elf and I heard there was going to be a battle between dwarves and a dragon, I know I'd be up in the bleachers eating popcorn and making side bets.
From the look on Thranduil's face as he turned away, I figure he'd bet heavily on the Dwarves....

Anyone who claims to know Tolkien better than their peers and then calls his work an allegory does not deserve even my contempt!

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
The author is relying quite heavily on the notion that Jackson just knows more about Tolkien and Middle Earth than we do and we should just trust him. That's the vibe I got from the article.
A very weak argument. Too many appeals to false authority. The way he deflects the criticism about character development is just to say the previous trilogy wasn't good at that either.

I'm not annoyed at what he's saying, so much as how he's trying to argue it.

I would be in the bleachers too , I feel so tired. And I love pop corn. But as soon as the dragon started his cruelty
I'd be down there fighting him. I don;t want him to hurt anyone So he has to go.

I have a hard time imagining you slaying a dragon, Leelee, no matter how badly he was behaving.
It's easier to imagine you speaking firmly to him and telling him to behave himself.

David, I think you came up with the only possible solution that could make that scene palatable to me.

No no I did not say I would slay him but as he was going to slay my friends he would have to go Else where and not bother my friendsl Talking very firmly would not work or he would not have killed happily so many So I would stop him the best I could and hope the elves and others ,namely Gandalf would put him somewhere he could not hurt othersl

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
Just got home from seeing it again. Liked more of it than I did last time. Maybe I'm getting mellow with age. Really like the first third, back at Bag End up the the troll scene. After that, I find some bits a bit more hard to digest. Why they throw down their swords only to be put on a spit by the trolls still aggravates me though! As compensation, I actually like Radagast and his rabbits! Go figure! Oh yes, I did not mind the ending this time, as expecting it I could enjoy it more. It didn't seem so abrupt this time.

Yeah, I was more accepting of it the second time too, same thing happened in LoTR. But placidly enjoying bunny sleds?! There's principles involved, you know!
