Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
Maybe The Hobbit will help us (or at least me) appreciate PJ's LOTR even more. That's happened before with other disappointing folow-ups.

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
Interesting article. Between that and their earlier "too big" piece The Atlantic seems to be waving the flag of purism proudly these days.

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
I'd say about 50% of the Hobbit was what I had hoped for, 30% was okay if I forgot I was watching the Hobbit, and 20% was pure popcorn: fun or acceptable at the time (if you totally forget you are watching the Hobbit) but meaningless and instantly forgettable.

"From him they learnt many things it were not good for any but the great Valar to know, for being half-comprehended such deep hidden things slay happiness; and besides many of the sayings of Melko were cunning lies or were but partly true, and the Noldoli ceased to sing, and their viols fell silent upon the hill of Kôr, for their hearts grew somewhat older as their lore grew deeper and their desires more swollen, and the books of their wisdom were multiplied as the leaves of the forest."

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
I saw that link earlier but haven't been able to watch it yet. I love Half in the Bag so I've been curious about their take. From what I hear they hated the HFR and weren't too positive about the rest of the movie either.
Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
Between reviews on here and Bree, and all the critics' reviews too (or at least the ones I pay any mind to - meaning those that can actually spell Tolkien's name and don't claim AUJ to be a "purist's delight") are making me all angsty about seeing it. I want to enjoy it but I'm terribly afraid that I won't be able to with the ghost of Petty sitting next to me in the theatre, throwing ghostly popcorn at the screen.
In other news - we have a home! Have paid the bond and we sign the lease on Monday. Very excited, moving to another city and cohabiting (although I have shared before) for the first time So we won't be homeless this Christmas, hooray!
