This guy really hates the Hobbit

"Peter Jackson's watchwords in this latest series seem to be Bigger, Louder, Longer and More Violent as if somehow sheer scale provides cover for having failed to tell the basic story Tolkien wrote well, let alone faithfully. If Jackson undertakes the Jesus story next, expect 10,000 Jesuses to be crucified alongside a million thieves and a crèche scene set in a stockyard with a million head of cattle and armies of wise men in combat hacking their way to the Nativity scene."

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
Oh just go see it. Once you've accepted it's not Tolkien's Hobbit much of it is quite watchable. I just saw it a second time (adding 3D) and could enjoy it more because I wasn't caught off guard by the stupid bits. Same thing happened with LoTR.

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
I was planning to take a Figgian sensibility with me to the see the movie and view it as an 'imaginative interpretation' and not a 'definite adaptation', but even Mrs Figg was disappointed with the movie! Eegad!
I'm even hearing the LotR movies described as being closer to the book than The Hobbit movie is!

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
Oh come on Orwell, you can't back out now. I've been waiting for weeks to hear what you think of it.
I'm still going to see The Hobbit a second time in HFR to see what I make of the new technology (and to see if my opinion of the movie changes), but that probably won't be for another week or so.

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
If anyone here thinks I'll go and see it just to have my memories of the book absolutely tarnished as LotR was, well then you've got rocks in your heads...
Mind, I probably will go and see it.... fookin' curiousity is a killer every time...
Actually, I now have such low expectations, I might even enjoy it. But not yet. Too much work on, too much responsibility handed down to me at moment (Gawd I hate being responsible for the actions of others! ), and too tired to give anything a fair go... Next week .. maybe...

"Absolutely tarnished"? I thought you liked the movies, at least that you did relative to Petty. {{{I might be mixing up which Banks persona says what. }}}

Re: Critics review 'An Unexpected Journey'
I have incredibly mixed feelings about the LotR movies... gut wrenching mixed feelings... though some of it I thought excellent. Indeed, some un-Tolkien things I even liked... you know, the idea of replacing Glorfindel with Arwen (though the initial scenes especially were extremely poorly handled! )

Well it's better than Wizard of Oz, if that's any help deciding.
BTW Orwell, have you seen that there's a new WoO reboot in 3D coming out soon? I wonder what you'll have to say about that!?!
