I decided to work on The Treason of Forumshire first but this is next on my list of creative writing projects. If I feel like I need to take a break from big plot-heavy stuff I'll come back to this earlier.

Part 5 is almost ready for the other thread. Today has just been a crappy day. I found out my grandmother is in hospice and on morphine. The funeral will probably be next week. She's had pretty severe dementia for over a decade and she has just now stopped eating and drinking.

So anyway, I haven't done any writing so far today, but I might try to do some tonight just to take my mind off things.

Thanks. It's tough; in a way it feels like she's been slipping away for a long time. She couldn't even recognize her own kids anymore, much less grandkids like me. That was especially hard on my dad, I think. :/

Sorry for your news Eldo ! My mother is going the same way, but not as serious as your poor gran, Its reported that scientists are working on a "miracle meds" for this, lets hope they find an answer very soon! After watching MY mum, Im wondering if its the FAMILY suffer more in the way of grief etc, more than the sufferer ? And yet my other relatives lived to a grand old age,with hardly any health probs. Two of my aunts smoked like chimneys ! Best wishes Eldo.

In my experience some folk smoke till they die at 102 and are fine till the end, others go down with dementia at 50. You could go mad trying to predict it.

And I agree Azriel- its harder on the family than the person with dementia who tend to lack self awareness of their condition after a certain point.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I'm definitely worried for my grandfather. He retired a few years earlier than he planned so that he could look after my grandmother and that's basically been his life for the last 10-15 years since he didn't want her to have to live out the rest of her life in a nursing home (I'm sure it was nothing personal, Petty). So yeah, it's tough.

Eldo after 20 years working in care I wouldnt wish my worst enemy in one.
Your Grandfather has done his wife a service and he has my admiration for that knowing how hard it is on those closest.
I hope your family make him aware of just how much you know he has given up and endured for the woman he loved. He has done all he can by her and she, more than anyone I imagine, would want him to have more years to come in which he can have peace and know happiness again.
My advice to you as family is just let him know how much he is still needed by the rest of you and that although you cannot understand fully what he has been through, you sure as hell can admire him for doing it and appreciate him for it.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother, Eldo. I hope your grandfather is OK.

If you don't mind a couple bits of advice, remember that funerals are never fun but they can be a unique opportunity to connect with aunts uncles and cousins in lasting ways, and there's nothing that would please a grandmother more than that! Times like this are what defines families.

Also, I'd encourage you to talk to your grandfather and ask him about family stories. Three very good things may happen: framing a life into stories can give life structure, having somebody interested in those stories can give life meaning, and the stories themselves can be beyond price!

Consider saying a few words at her funeral, when time comes. I read a few words to grandma and got surprised at how many came and thanked me for it, nurses and family. It's wasn't much, childhood memories and such. Just... from the heart.

My grandfather tried to take care of grandma, but it was too much for various reasons. He ended up in a home too. He died 4 years before she did.

There are seasons and times and such like, Eldo. While the rest of the Forumshirans are there for you in the difficult times, I assure you I will always be there for you in the good times. The better it is, the more I'll be there for you - hopefully, sharing fully in all the goodness. I believe in balance, you see. I mean, some people put down fair weather friends, but if you had no fair weather friends, then who would help you enjoy fair weather? I'll tell you who - Me!
