Yeah, I thought so too - what's the point of a guard on a sword hilt if you'll just burn your hands off if you touch it?

Classic lightsabers: "Why is there no crossguard to protect their fingers?"
New lightsabers: "Why is there a crossguard that endangers their fingers?"
Poor Abrams.

I was thinking about this too. And then I thought, well maybe in a duel if the opponents lightsaber slides down yours the laser guard would block it. But then I re-watched the trailer and if that happened the opponent's lightsaber would cut off the part of the saber that the guard comes out of, rendering the guard broken and unusable.

I never had that thought about classic lightsabers.

Eh...
I guess it's hard to be impartial while re-watching it.

Maybe I've spent too much time on SW fan forums then.
Although now I'm seeing some people who think it's Christian symbolism.

Re: Star Wars
And come on, the TPM trailer is a masterpiece among teasers. There's a reason no one expected it to be the mess that it turned out to be, even though the special editions had provoked a major controversy just two years earlier.

Do you have time to speak with me about your lord and savior Emperor Palpatine?

Idk, when I watch that teaser now, I feel like they focus too much on Anakin. Too much dialogue about "the boy." If they stuck to just the slam-bang-oooh-look-its-star-wars kind of shots, then I think I could give the trailer higher marks.

Re: Star Wars
I re-watched the trailer (again), this time on my computer, and it really is exciting. Being a teaser, it obviously doesn't let on much regarding the plot, but there are so many intriguing shots in it. Boyega being in stormtrooper armor (which apparently was included in one of the spy reports) hopefully means that the stormtroopers here are not all clones, and don't all speak with Temura Morrison's New Zealand accent. The helmet, droid, and X-wing designs are all immediately familiar while still being new; the stormtrooper designs remind me of how they sort of reverse-engineered earlier versions of the armor for the prequel trilogy's clone troopers. And speaking of the X-wings, that shot of them over the lake is breathtaking (thanks for the GIF, bungo!). We've never seen anything like it in Star Wars, and it looks amazing. The upside-down shot of the Falcon was new too. Heck, even the iconic Star Wars logo spreading apart for the subtitle to appear inside was a new design choice. It remains to be seen what the emotional core of the film will be like and whether or not the plot makes even a lick of sense, but I feel fairly confident that it will have plenty of great moments that make it entertaining, and I'm officially looking forward to this now.
Re: Star Wars
I would make a joke about you hearing Cumberbatch everywhere, Norc, but I was reading an io9 piece that suggested the same thing earlier.
Cumberbatch is not attached to the movie, though, so it's probably not him. Might be Andy Serkis or Max von Sydow.

Re: Star Wars
We'll see. This looks good though the feel of it at least, i like especially how the music is retro-star wars too
Re: Star Wars
Yeah, the classic music blended together perfectly with the new John Williams compositions. I can't wait to hear more from him.
Also, call me crazy, but I actually really hope that John Boyega's character is a stormtrooper. I want one of them to be an actual character in addition to the ominous mass presence that they provide.

Re: Star Wars
Hitfix claims to have verified that it was Andy Serkis doing the voice-over.

I've gotta disagree with them about not having heard Serkis do a voice like this before, though. He voiced the Lord of the Nazgul in ROTK (as well as Gollum obviously). Him and Craig Parker both did a lot of ADR work during post. Serkis has quite a varied vocal range.

Re: Star Wars
It is a little weird talking to kids for whom there is no real distinction between the original trilogy, the prequels, and (in some cases) the Clone Wars TV series. It's all just Star Wars to them, and it remains hella popular. Good on kids for enjoying stuff that they like, though I do wonder how the current generation's view of Star Wars will change as they mature and their tastes change. I doubt they'll ever have the vitriol for the prequels that people who were teens or adults when they came out do, though. I'm in an in-between spot myself, generationally speaking, but I have enough nostalgia for the prequels that I'm more able/willing to point to their positive moments, such as they are, even though they're seriously flawed (and I preferred the OT even as a little kid ).
Re: Star Wars
I grew up on the 1997 special editions. I was 10 when I saw TPM, and I think I remember enjoying the movie. I remember thinking that some of the acting in AOTC was just bad, and I never saw ROTS in theaters. I remember not being impressed the first time I saw it on DVD, though. So I went through a phase with the prequels while they were still being released. It's been a long time since I watched them, but I've watched the Plinkett reviews many times. I feel like I should watch them again some time.

Maybe this will be our first ever Star Wars movie without wipe transitions.
