Re: Confirmed Cast So Far
They are still making a film aren't they? Hell of a quiet at the mo. Sir Ian hasn't updated his blog in over a month- and I thought film acting largely consisted of sitting about in trailers waiting- lazy thats what it is! Nothing but lazy!
Gives us some news to get crabbit about people. Come on we waited more than long enough for the film to start being made the least you can do is tempt, tease and annoy us with titbits. Silence sucks (unless they are in Doctor Who!)

Mmm whats the most crabbit question I can ask him?
Will you still let your wife and her mate take on writing an adaptation of Tolkien even after they displayed a complete ineptitude to do so in LotR's?
That a good place to start?

We already know the answer to that since the scripts are done*, though.

*As done as any PJ/Walsh/Boyens script will be, even months into filming"- Eldo
A well placed caveat Eldo! Deserving of a Level 1 Crabbit award. Congratulations!
So how about asking instead "Will you be replacing all of Tolkiens dialogue with your own crude modern version or just removing it altogether and replacing it with some ridiculous visual spectacle instead as you did in LotR's? For example dumping Tolkiens excellent "White light" conversation between Gandalf and Saruman with two old men on wires hitting each other with sticks."
or
"Is it safe to assume you will be as disrespectful to Tolkien this time in throwing out his life times work and story construction in favour of your own 'better' ideas as you were in LotR's? And that complete changes to the story and motivations and personalities of the characters are to be expected thanks to your greater wisdom in all matters Middle Earth?'

Sadly, judging by the people on facebook, he can't do no wrong, he's some sort of demigod, whose followers will turn nasty if you turn on their idol! But props to the guy for being so engaged with the fans, I give him credit for that!

We are thrilled to confirm that Stephen Fry will be playing The Master of Laketown. ......... In addition to his writing skills, he's a terrific actor and will create a very memorable Master for us.
This is fab....love stephen fry!
The Master's conniving civil servant, Alfrid will be played by Ryan Gage. .........Last, and certainly not least, is Conan Stevens, who will be playing an Orc called Azog

Re: Confirmed Cast So Far
Azog is the orc chieftain in TH (I think it says that somewhere in LotR's) the son or grand son of the orc that was slaughtered and beheaded in fron tof Moria if memeory serves.
Stephen Fry is a great choice- the man does no bad in my book. Actual good news. I feel faint!
add- dont remember an Alfred. Sure thats not Batman? But I could be wrong. However I thought i recognised the name Ryan Gage- and a quick check on IMDB says he is playing Drogo Baggins in TH! Two roles or a mistake somewhere?

I agree about Fry (in principle) providing they stick to the book.

Actually, Bolg is the orc chieftain in The Hobbit. He was the son of Azog, who was the orc chieftain during the War of the Dwarves and Orcs who killed Thror and was in turn killed during the final battle. I'm not sure what to make of this news....
Re: Confirmed Cast So Far
He was the orc killed in TH, but he had no name actually mentioned in the book, only later in LotR.

Re: Confirmed Cast So Far
Your Lore Mastery is spot on as ever Eldo. And it does make it a bit worrying. Why use Azog's name? That was a huge, important moment in Dwarven history the slaying of Azog- it even passed into dwarven culture if my memory is right, about a 'burnt dwarf' being and honorable phrase as they had to burn the bodies of the dead dwarves after the battle so great were the numbers of slain. (Sure you can correct me i I have that wrong Eldo!). So why put him in the hobbit, or are they somehow going to crudely move that bit of dwarf history into TH somehow?!
I feel a crabbit meter explosion brewing!
And is Ryan Gage playing Drogo and Alfred or what? It'd be a bit weird, not like in one role he will be under a lot of makeup or anything-ones a hobbit the other a human, they are not so different in appereance, it will be obvious the same guy is playing both- seems a bit odd.
edit- was having a nosey about and found this on an entertainment site - 'Ryan Gage will play "conniving civil servant, Alfrid"'- as the description of the character is in quotes I assume its from the press release.

Stephen Fry as the Master of Laketown will be great He's not scrawny as I imagined the Master would be, though, but that doesn't really matter.

All I can think of now is this "Alfred" character walking around saying "Yes, Master of Lake-town" while plotting how to expand the power of the civil service despite the uncertain political climate of Eriador.
Re: Confirmed Cast So Far
From the facebook post
So he was playing Drogo, but PJ likes him so he's playing Alfrid! And Drogo is described as a small role!
Ryan is a great young actor who we originally cast in a small role, but we liked him so much, we promoted him to the much larger Alfrid part.
