Confirmed Cast So Far

Don't forget Itaril if the rumors are trueand they'll need more than just Bard at Laketown, not to mention other key players at the battle of the five armies. Oh and some knid of figure head for the forces in mirkwood!

I refuse to think about even the possibility of Itaril. Otherwise my crabbit meter explodes!

Surely Thranduil is the figurehead of the Mirkwood forces (or given its PJ Legolas!)
As to Laketown well there is the Mayor or whatever the head guy is called. And he will no doubt have advisers- whether they get speaking parts or not is another matter.

Dain needs to be in there, and probably a next-in-command type character to give room for dialogue (Jackson are fond of these I've noticed). I wouldn't be too quick to count spiders and trolls as talking characters, I'm not sure he'll find that "appropriate".

What if Dain falls in love with Itaril. Now, that would be a superb idea! I'll read the book and see if I can find it somewhere between the lines...

It’s the 21st of March down in New Zealand (or Middle-earth, depending on how geeky you are!), and reporting on the much-anticipated start of filming today, stuff.co.nz mentions something very interesting regarding casting.

There have been several casting announcements since Martin Freeman was confirmed as the lead in October last year. Yesterday Warner Bros. named Kiwi actors Jeffrey Thomas and Mike Mizrahi for the roles of dwarf kings Thror and Thrain.

No wind of this casting announcement has reached the rest of the interweb yet. So only time can prove the veracity of this story. In the meantime, the rest of the article also includes some more interesting information. It goes on to state that:

Now, on the first day of filming, Jackson has revealed a sneak peek inside the new Bag End, the home of lead hobbit Bilbo Baggins. The photo of Jackson stepping through the front door of Baggins’ fictional home in The Shire was the only photograph issued by Warner Brothers yesterday, part of strict secrecy surrounding the film.


Let's hope Thror and Thrain will only appear in flashback scenes, and not have roles exceeding that (if this is real). Anything else would be quite silly

Well if they are in it it might confirm my suspicion of the movie beginning with Smaug sacking the Lonely Mountain. And is it not Thrain who had one of the seven dwarf rings and whom Gandalf met in the dungeons of the Necromancer half mad, and from whom he got the map and key? Sounds like that will also be in the film. No doubt tying somehow the dwarf ring to the One Ring and its finding!


Further to the point about talking trolls and spiders the trolls at least must talk, if PJ is truly planning this to sit alongside his LotR films. At Bilbo's birthday he tells the troll story to the hobbit children and says "they were arguing over which way to cook us" etc And we know what the trolls look like because they are in PJ's FotR.

That crossed my mind too. Can't see that working though, unless it is a flashback or something, and even then I don't really think it's a good idea.

Good point, gives me hope for talking trolls (I had feared there wouldn't be any). Let's just hope Jackson remembers that little scene you mention now!

They cast people to be Elendil and Isildur in LOTR, and they only showed up in very brief flashbacks. I don't see any reason (at this point, at least) for anyone's purist knickers to be in a twist.

Latest casting rumour!

Oh God.

*sighs* Alright, deep breaths ... does anyone here know if Bret McKenzie can actually act? I like a few Flight of the Conchords songs but I've never seen him in a real acting role.

Also, it's possible that this is just a made-up rumor, but then again, Saorise Ronan did just say PJ is making up lots of roles. Just so long as it isn't actually the character of Figwit who appears.

I've worked it out! I've been hit by a car and I'm a weird coma where my deepest fears are paraded before me. Its got to be.

Wasn't Stuart Townsend the original Aragorn in PJ's LOTR trilogy, but then got fired?

Their character description is pretty much exactly what the purported casting sheet said. But yes, it's an April Fool's joke. TORn has one every year. Last year they said The Hobbit had been green-lit at a time when everyone in their forums was fretting over whether the project would happen or not.
