Oh Figgy, that's a GREAT idea!
Okay, how about if you plan a new summer science camp for 50 middle school students (since you ain't a Yank this translates to Squatch's age or thereabouts) that keeps them continuously involved for 2 weeks, and must include math(S), physical and life science, computer technology, engineering design, presentation skills, and be focused on a unified camp problem. You'll also need to find the teachers and staff to do this. Oh, and this has to be on top of what you *already* promised to do during the the first half of the year. Sorry, all payment is 'in kind'.
When can you start?

Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits
What an easy job Halfwise! The solution is obvious, you hire them all out to labour on a farm.
Physical and life science taken care of right there.
Computer rechnology- modern milking machine qualifies there.
Engineering- no problem, ditch digging, shit shovelling, making catttle grids, bridges to get across big ditches, plenty engineering and maths possibilities.
Presentation skills- market day when they have to go sell the cattle.
And a unified camp problem- making you a profit.
And you of course spend the summer sipping buckie in the sun on a farm eating fresh produce every day.
You can pay me my cut for this brilliant idea in advance if you like. (I dont work for payment 'inkind' and if I did you couldn't afford me- I go through a lot of buckie)

Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits
oh for goodness sake thats easy peasy, just put them all in a bus send them out to some fields/forest/countryside and get them to build their own tents, engineering design sorted, then you give em some cash and tell em they have to budget for two weeks of food/supplies/beer/sweeties, that takes care of the maths, then as a science 'adventure' you get em to collect stuff they find dead at the side of the road and tell em to observe the decomposition of said roadkill as a science 'experiment' that takes care of the biology, then you tell em to collect wood for the fire and water to make the food, that should get em well and truly knackered so they all fall asleep at ten oclock leaving you and the blonde teacher with the big boobies time to crack open some vino and play scrabble. phew! howzat? am I hired?

It was the boobies line swung it, wasn't it Halfwise? Admit it. Sorry can't offer those in my plan, although as a good Scotshobbit I got that Mrs Figgs beat in the mooning stakes every time.
Hah! Hers is hardly even hairy!
And what will Orwell think Mrs Figg? Besides I thought you worked for Odo as his Senior Knob Polisher in his Door-Knobs factory or something? Sure thats what he said, although I may have been drunk at the time, there being that slim posibility and all, and misheard.

I'm actually the mooner-in-chief at one of our hang gliding spots, so I have a soft spot for you Mrs. Figg. At one point a car came driving up to one of the camp fires, so I did my usual: dashed out and mooned the headlights full-on. Sat back down and the our club president said with some resignatation "great, you just mooned the land-owner!"
Fortunately he knew our type and there were no repercussions.

I dont know you lot just dont take your mooning seriously.
Its an art form not to be done at the drop of a trouser belt like Americans do, waving it about at the slightest opportunity. Its about timing, impact and effect and above all, the most crucial factor, it has to be done at the precise moment its funniest.
Balance all those things and then you are at the Scots level of mooning quality.

I shall have to visit Scotland for an advanced course.
Mooning a random car in it's headlights doesn't qualify? I think you need to lay out examples of what is a good moon and what is a piss-poor moon. I'm eagerly awaiting guidance.

Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits
Watched all your edits now, Petty, but I'm sorry to say that I am not able to give you any helpful feedback this time around. But maybe that is feedback good enough in itself - your edits are perfected! Though, there was a couple of things I'd like to comment on:
Other than that I have no quibbles. Of course there are some "PJ & Coven-scenes" which I like that you have removed, but the finished product is better for it I think, as some of those scenes are inconsistent with the books, and keeping them would have ruined the point of your edits. I would like to thank you one last time, though, for these edits - I now have six brand new movies in my collection, six movies which I will continue to watch with pleasure for a long time.
Kafria summed your edits up pretty accurately: It is amazing how different the same footage can feel, what becomes the focus, just from the way it is put together. I cannot put it any better than that. So thank you for your countless hours of editing, fitting in the feedback you recieved, uploading, improving the quality (which doesn't get any better than this, by the way, neither sound nor picture ). Cheers, Petty - your work is much appreciated, for whatever it's worth
- Spoiler:
- How come you removed Gollum's flashback from the scene where Frodo calls him by his real name, and instead put it in the Shadow of the Past scene? I always thought that was a brilliant move, and now it's gone!
Also, there is one more thing, and I think I may have asked you this before when I had watched a previous edit, but I can't remember your reply. How come you haven't removed the scene where Gandalf gets his ass kicked by the Witch King? This is, in my opinion, the worst thing Peter Jackson ever did - ripping Gandalf's power and awesomeness away, just like that. Gandalf would have been dead had Jackson applied some logic (what Witch King leaves a Wizard alive if it takes him two seconds extra to kill him off?). I mean, Gandalf does not lose a battle! He kills balrogs, damnit. Is it because of sound issues? If it is, couldn't you have used footage from the theatrical edition, where this scene is omitted? Or do you, god forbid, like this hideous scene?

Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits
First up- thankyou Ringdrotten your feedback but probably more importantly knowing you (and others like Kafria) are watching and looking to make suggestions has made the whole thing so much more worthwhile than if I were still just doing them for my own pleasure (and they are considerably better for the feedback than if I had been doing them alone). The pleaure has been mine.
Now onto your points:
Now onto your points:
- Spoiler:
- I struggled with the gollum scene shift- I really liked it where it was and I worked damn hard to get the crossfade from Gollums face to Smeagols.
But in the end there are a few reasons why-
1. Without it in SotP the scene would go from the Ring sinking in the river to Frodo saying "And Bilbo found it in Gollums cave"- which leaves a rather obvious gap between river and ending up in a cave. Although you can get round it by arguing Frodo knows where Bilbo found it so just assumed it ends up in a cave its a bit of a strecth for the viewer (and part of the aim of the edits was to show you could be truer and not lose the interest or understanding of a new viewer-that Pj did not have to aim so low or treat his audience so poorly, but it does still have to work without bringing book knowledge to the film).
2. The preceding scene of the Last Alliance, Isildur getting attacked and losing the Ring is quite long and has almost no dialogue in it. Without the Smeagol scene there is only Frodo's brief line about Bilbo finding it in Gollums cave before back into another largely dialogue free flashback. It just did not seem to flow for me. It was too bitty.
3. This is the deciding one, Tolkien is spot on with his structuring. Having it here, seeing what happened to Smeagol, gives the emotional weight behind Frodo freaking out and demanding Gandalf take the Ring.
In short- I really liked it where it was but for a variey of reasons think it is better where it is now.
The Gandalf/Witchking is a tricky one. The main problem is, as you point out, it is rubbish. Or at least what happens is-the reason it is still there is that it is all that is left of a scene which should be there- where the Witch king enters the gates of Minas Tirith for the first time and finds Gandalf alone awaitng him. The horns of the Rohirrim make the Witch-king turn and leave.
In broad outline this is what happens in PJ's- Gandalf confronts the Witch-king he leaves upon hearing the horns- which is why it is still in my edit- the problem is what PJ adds, Gandalf getting his ass kicked. Ideally I would cut away when the fell beast roars at Pippion to the Witch-king hearing the horns and flying off- the problem there is continuity as Gandalf ends the scene on his arse.

Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits
- Spoiler:
- The Gandalf/Witchking thing is more debatable than some- my balance in general is between Tolkien and PJ- is there enough Tolkien left in a scene or is too much PJ?- Gandalf gettting easily whipped is bad Pj- it being a version of the scene from the book is the Tolkien plus point. The question is does the Tollkien outweigh the awful PJ intejection?
I've had similar problems elsewhere- I lost a favourite book scene from TT because PJ just arsed it- the scene where Sam accuses Gollum of 'sneaking' and Gollum takes the huff. Its a wonderfully comic and sad scene full of characterisation- unfortuntely PJ only gives the very opening of it, then turns it sinister, then twists it to serve his own change concerning Frodo eventually choosing Gollum over Sam- so although it had genuiine Tolkien bases to it the PJ awfulness balance was way out so it had to go.
The Gandalf/Witchking scene is a lot more finally balanced.

- Spoiler:
- You could say that, but it doesn't change the fact that the scene fundamentally ruins the character of Gandalf (in my opinion, that is). But I can easily live with that scene being there, it just annoys me how wrong it is.

Re: Petty's Purist LotR Edits
The bad news is you may still want to upload book 1 again when i get round to putting the redone version up- its got a minor change to make a cut smoother, the proper subtitles for when Aragorn meets Arwen before the Ford and the 'bedroom' conversation between Aragorn and Arwen is cut, making the Rivendell section smoother (and a little shorter).
