I like the look of the Rivendell costumes. However, I thought that in LOTR those were some of the few costumes that were not that great. It looked like they grabbed a bunch of people from a Rennaissance Festival and stuck them in the background of the Rivendell set. Hopefully they'll look better for The Hobbit.

I really can’t help but think that a lot of this is stemming from the idea that some fans (not the fandom, some fans) are putting up their guard.

We have three weeks until the Hobbit movie. And we all know what that means: an onslaught of new fans from all over the place. Already the Sherlock fans are involved. Lee Pace might bring some Twilight fans. Doctor Who fans might come for Sylvester McCoy. People who are fans of Orlando Bloom are going to flock to see him. Parents are going to bring their kids to these films. People who were too young to see Lord of the Rings when it came out will see this. This is inevitable, there are going to be countless amounts of new fans.

So I’m wondering if perhaps the older, more elitist “fans” are just trying to put up a guard of some sort. Why? They might be afraid of the new fans. This same thing happened ten years ago when Lord of the Rings was being made into a film franchise. You had a group of people who had been “fans” since the sixties (or whenever) who did nothing but bash the newer fans. “You didn’t come here because of the books, you’re not a true fan.”

Let me quote Sophie for a second on what constitutes a “true fan”:

~there is no criteria except love and respect for something in order to be a fan of it

And that goes for any fandom. If the films brought you here instead of the books, you still get to be a fan. Never read the Silmarillion? You still get to be a fan! You don’t sit around in a pub called “The Prancing Pony” speaking in fluent Quenya and debate whether or not Balrogs have wings? Guess what - YOU STILL GET TO BE A FAN! There is no prerequisite for being a fan of anything, except to have a love for the particular topic the fandom is based off of. So everyone, I repeat, EVERYONE, gets to be a fan. (Although I think if there were any other prerequisites it would be to not be a complete asshat to newer and younger fans.)

I don’t care who you are or how you discovered Middle-Earth, you are allowed in this fandom, and there are plenty of people, myself included, willing to shout out a hearty “Mae Govannen!” and give you a hug.

I think it's more of a defense mechanism against the dangers of over-inflated expectations. That, and plenty of people have legitimate worries about how the movies will turn out.

I remember back when I was in school, there were a lot of people who'd never read the books but were fans. Nothing wrong with that. It was kinda funny when they cited the movies only for debates though

yes Petty I desaturated it bit by bit, I did the architecture first as I hate that pink. It just makes me wonder what the f*** they are thinking. If these are the final colours I despair really. How can they think it looks good? Its not even a beautiful looking sunset, if thats the aim. There is that over killed blue and the OTT pink, its hideous. i only did a quicky version of the other photo and I would have left the sky in the background pinker and lighter but they look like living people now i hope.

Now is the time for hope, and there are many hopeful signs.
There will be plenty of time to despair in 2 weeks if it becomes necessary.

Hope is a fools (sober persons) game David. Best expect disappontment and misery- that way you wont be disappointed, life rarely lets you down here, and if it actually turns out to be any good thats a pleasant suprise.

thing is, I was hoping if all else failed, at least it would be stunningly beautiful to look at, like LOTR. But it looks a bit hit and miss, some things look great and some things look like a bad trip, but maybe it will look better on film than it does in stills.

Yeah, the coloring has bothered me for a while too. It did seem to be getting better in the more recent trailers and clips though so my fingers are crossed.

I had exactly the same thought Eldo, followed by a slight pang of pity they had done them as posters this time- the sketches of the actors/characters at the end of RotK I thought was a lovely suprise touch.
Kind of seems a waste to just use them for advertising this time out.
