Eldorion wrote:My impression of the quote is that it means Smaug will survive longer. The end of the second movie is still only two-thirds of the way through the movie, which is what Boyens is complaining about. I get the sense that they've made Smaug directly involved in the Battle of the Five Armies somehow, though I hope that's not the case.
I share the fear, but the quotation is, "A three-film structure gives us room to deal with some of the trickier elements in the story. The dragon dies about two thirds of the way through the book!" If this response was to a question such as "Why 3 movies?" then her remarks could be simply a justification of why they chose to break the story into 3 movies. Also, choosing "Desolation of Smaug" as the title makes me think they have a relatively tight story line for the second movie (....hoping....)
That they're retaining "There and Back Again" as the 3rd title suggests that, whatever else happens, they're planning to bring it all back to the Shire at the end. If they deviate wildly from the story, I think it will be in the first half of the 3rd movie but I'm not going to guess publicly at this point.

azriel wrote:and we know Cumberbath is voicing Smaug....AND the Necromancer in the second Hobbit film...Now how could this be...? well a unconfirmed source says....
Yes, the Necromancer will be voiced by Lees in the first and second film. He will not have a physical body, and will be portrayed as a uber-wraith. At the end of the second film, the Necromancer will be chased out by the White Council and his spirit will travel towards Erebor with the White council in pursuit.
Meanwhile all the events unfold at Lake Town and Smaug is killed by Bard, falling into the lake. The dwarves, men, and elves move on to their fight over the treasure and eventually the beginning of the battle of 5 armies. In the middle of the battle, the Necromancer’s spirit arrives and reanimates the body of Smaug. Necromancers after all...raise the dead. Smaug/Necromancer will then join the battle and will be voiced by Cumberbatch, because at this point the Necromancer and Smaug are one being. With the arrival of the eagles enabling combat with the dragon in mid-air, causing the Necromancer/Smaug to flee, flying to Mordor where the Nazgul have fled as well. The Necromancer will shed the "Smaug body" by breathing fire onto the top of his tower thus taking the shape of a giant fire ball eye.
Thoughts???
I found this posted by a member on "The Hobbit Movie Forum", your sister site. They in turn found it on ToRN site 1st. Now you may think this is a daft idea ! BUT, we are talking PJ !? Ive posted my idea on there in reply.
It sounds like someone's opinion that alot of people liked and eventually was thought of as the truth. This seems a bit too crazy, even for PJ. And why would they have the same actor play two different parts if they would just become the same in the end? The audience would smell something fishy.

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
It does sound like rumour,I agree. But what IF PJ blended the voices together, just as he did when Aragorn,Leggy & Gimli met the "white Wizard" in Fangorn AFTER they knew Gandalf had fallen ? It did sound like it was either Sir Iain OR Chris Lee. He also used the same actor to "speak" as Gimli & Treebeard, that seemed to go ok with audiences ? Its probably a crock of s..t, I admit. but it seemed an interesting idea to someone & maybe a point of discussion, maybe ?,if only for 5mins ?

Re: More Hobbit pictures [2] SPOILER THREAD
Given how much the dwarves in LoTR looked like dwarves and the ones in The Hobbit do not, (well, some do, but not the eye-candy ones like Thorin), I wonder if the elves will look like elves? We've only seen 3 so far, I'm betting much of the rest will look like Japanese anime girls.

If this is what the new elves will look like, Tolkien purism can go take a hike.

No matter what else may be said about men, we are still captivated by the eyes first. The rest just makes us smug in recollection.
