Re: Doctor Who [3]
Petty's Spoiler filled review of A Town Called Mercy
Trailer for next weeks mysterios Power of 3 -
- Spoiler:
- The last time the Doctor was in the Wild West he was still in his first incarnation and he had really bad toothache- a problem which led him to one Doc Holliday, some mistaken identity and was largely played for laughs.
It was made in 1966 was shot entirely in a studio and featured no American actors at all and ran for four episodes (or two modern ones) so was twice as long as last nights offering.
There is a reason Who never went back West in all the years inbetween and its a simple one- the western genre rather relies on heroes and bad guys shooting each other a lot- not much use for a show with a hero who doesnt use a weapon.
And anyone excepting a fast paced, action packed western themed epiosde in the vein of last weeks Dinosaurs on a Spaceship is going to be disappointed as what writer Toby Whitehouse actually gives us is a small rather intimate at times character study.
Rather than using the Western setting for shoot outs, or stage coach chases or some such Whitehouse gives us a Who take on some other stables of the genre- the mysterious stranger with the unknown past, the threat to the town and of course the man with no name.
At its heart this is a morality piece.
The town of Mercy is under threat from a sinister cyborg cowboy- who wants an alien doctor holed up in the town of Mercy. Yup theres two doctors.
The other doctor turns out to be just that- a surgeon, doctor and scientist from another planet whose ship crash landed - since his arrival this doctor, whose name is Kahler-Jex (henceforth Jex for short) has cured the town cholera and 10 years ahead of time given them electricity- but since the arrival of the cyborg he has been kept in the jail under the protection of the town Marshall, Issac.
Amy: What does he want? Has he issued some kind of demand?
Isaac: Says he wants us to give him the alien doctor.
Amy (to Doctor): But that's you? Why would he want to kill you? Unless he's met you.
Its up to the Doctor to work out what the cyborg wants, who Jex really is and what to do with him- and that really is the plot.
We find out fairly quickly about Jex- he is one of the scientists who made the cyborg- who made many of them to win a war on his home planet- and the process was one of torture, experimentation and trial and error on live subjects- rather nicely and effectively conveyed when the Doctor watches a computer record in Jex's ship- all we see is flickering images across the Doctors grim face, but we hear the screams.
In last weeks episode we saw the Doctor dispense justice of his own making, crossing a line he normally doesn't and he did so out of sight of his companions.
Not this time, here we see the Doctor generally lose it and decide that the best thing to do is to take this monsterous scientist and give him to the cyborg and save the town. To this end he takes the alien to the edge of town where there is a line in the sand - a self imposed line the cyborg will not cross for fear of civilain casualities and a metaphorical line in the sand for the underlying question of this episode- how far will the Doctor go?
Quite far it seems. He throws Jex out over the line to be given justice by the cyborg, then prevents Jex coming back by holding him at gunpoint.
This is rare terrirtory for the Doctor, to be pointing a gun. And when Jex says "You wouldn't."
The Doctor responds by cocking the gun and replying "I genuinely dont know." This is deeply troubling stuff.
Its only the intervention of an incredulous Amy who saves the day, taking up a gun herself she points it at the Doctor;
Amy: Let him come back, Doctor.
The Doctor: Or what? You won't shoot me, Amy.
Amy: How do you know? Maybe I've changed. I mean you've clearly been taking stupid lessons since I saw you last.
The Doctor: We could end this right now. We could save everyone right now!
Amy: This is not how we roll, and you know it. What's happened to you, Doctor? When did killing someone become an option?
Of course we the viewers know the answer to that- last week, when Amy wasnt there. And this week is pay off for that decision.
But this is a Doctor as close to the edge as I have seen him since Tennant in the Waters of Mars. A Doctor who is having a very hard time dealing with the weight of his own past and present actions.
The Doctor: Jex has to answer for his crimes.
Amy: And what then? Are you going to hunt down everyone who's made a gun or a bullet or a bomb?
The Doctor:
But they keep coming back, don't you see? Every time I negotiate, I try
to understand. Well not today. No, today I honor the victims first.
His, The Master's, the Daleks'. All the people that died because of my
mercy!
Amy:
See this is what happens when you travel alone for too long. Well
listen to me, Doctor, we can't be like him. We have to be better than
him.
And this leads us into the notty heart of this tale. Because the evil scientist is not just an evil scientist, he is shades of grey- the Sherriff wants to protect him because he saved the town from cholera, he gave them street lighting and heating and has genuinley been trying to help all he can. Nor is he immune to the repurcussions of his past-
Kahler-Jex: You think I'm unaffected by what I did? That I don't hear them screaming every time I close my eyes. It would be so much simpler if I was
just one thing, wouldn't it? The mad scientist who made that killing
machine. Or the physician. Who's dedicated his life to serving this
town. The fact that I'm both bewilders you.
The Doctor:
Oh, I know exactly what you are. And I see this reformation for what it
really is. You committed an atrocity and choose this for your
punishment. Don't get me wrong—good choice. Civilized hours, lots of
adulation, nice weather. But—but! Justice doesn't work like that. You
don't get to decide when and how your debt is paid!
Kahler-Jex: In my culture, we believe that when
you die your spirit has to climb a mountain, carrying the souls of
everyone you wronged in your lifetime. Imagine the weight I will have to
lift. The monsters I created, the people they killed. Isaac. He was my
friend. Now his soul will be in my arms too. Can you see now why I fear
death? You want to hand me over, there's no shame in that. But you won't,
we all carry our prisons with us. Mine is my past. Yours is your
morality.
So the Doctor decides to protect Jex from the cyborg and comes up with a plan to get Jex to his ship where he can escape whilst the Doctor confronts the cyborg High Noon style under the town clock.
Jex reaches his ship but instead of taking off he set sits self destruct.
The Gunslinger: Face me!
Kahler-Jex: No. You've killed enough. I'm ending the war for you too.
And with the words ;
Kahler-Jex: Thank you Doctor. I have to face the souls of those I've wronged. Perhaps they will be kind.
Jex and his ship blow sky high. The cyborg, having seeing itself as having no part to play in peace opts to go out into the desert and destroy himself, but the Doctor has a better solution- to protect the peace and the final shot we see of the cyborg is on a ridge overlooking Mercy withthe Marshall badge pinned to his chest as the bookeending narration concludes-
By the time the Gunslinger arrived, the people of Mercy were used to
the strange and impossible. Where he came from didn't matter. As a man
once said, "America is a land of second chances." Do I believe the
story? I don't know. My great grandmother must have been a little girl
when he arrived. But next time you're in Mercy, ask someone why they
don't have a marshall or sheriff, or policeman there. "We got our own
arrangement" they'll say. Then they'll smile like they got a secret.
Like they got their own angel watching out for them. Their very own angel
who fell from the stars.
So the good- I liked the morlaity tale aspect of this and that it wasnt just a cliched filled western romp- this turned out to be a more mature story than I was expecting. However its also a morality tale which scifi is not unknow to have trodden before- Star Trek has been there in several incarnations and Battlestar Galatica- so for the scifi buff there is a familariaty here.
But these sorts of tales abot who is right and wrong, what is good and bad, will arise again until humans work out the answer, and it is all done well here.
Matt Smith is on exceptionally fine form in this one, he always is but there really is a sense of not knowing what he will do next, an unpredictability in this series Doctor which is giving a darker edge to his performances.
It also looks the part- the decision to shoot in Spain on the famous lots used for spaghetti westerns pays off well. Compared to the studio bound effort of classic Who its miles apart.
And Murray Gold nails the score too, managing to stay just the right side of pastiche.
But there is some bad, there is a pacing issue, with the final resolution seeming to take too long to unfold.
The secondary characters get short shrift - the background towns people are pretty much just that- background- we barely get to know any of them and even the Marshall Issac isnt around long enough to get a fully developed character, meaning when he dies it lacks the impact it should have. And whilst the episode is book-ended by narration given by a descendant of someone who was a little girl in the town at the time we dont even find out the little girls name and she features in only one scene.
Most of these complaints about the secondary characters come back to my main complaint about Nuwho which is length- 45 minutes is not enough.
The classic series Gunslingers story was twice this lenght- and although this episode doesnt need to be twice as long it did need more time to establish the townsfolk and to give Amy and particuarly Rory something to do.
Overall though a solid if not exceptional episode of Who- a small morality tale in a big setting.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
Reviews are in for A Town Called Mercy:
The Independent- 'All in all, A town called Mercy was a good watch, there were moments of darkness but also a lot of humour. Whithouse has placed tropes from cowboy films over an episode of Doctor Who and the combination worked well together.'
Den of Geek- 'A Town Called Mercy is a good episode, and an entertaining piece of television. At points, it’s excellent, and rarely has a Doctor Who
location shoot looked as sun-drenched and exquisite as this one. But we end where we start: it felt like it should be something just more than it is. It's a fun, bumpy adventure to spend 45 minutes in the company of, and it demonstrates the real range in Matt Smith's performance. But it doesn't add up, when the credits roll, to much more than that. We suspect more than usual will disagree, though.'
SFX- This Western tale is very surprising in some respects… and totally unsurprising in others. 3 1/2 stars out of 5.
The Telegraph- 'what we had was an absorbing, thoughtful, adult piece of drama which, by not painting everything in black and white but utilising shades of grey, gave the viewer plenty to think about.' 4 stars out of 5.
The Guardian- 'Another week, another "blockbusting movie poster" that actually delivered on its premise.'
IGN- 'Rated as a Doctor Who episode, A Town Called Mercy was a weighty, progressive, sumptuous and entertaining adventure. Rated as a sci-fi western (hello Cowboys & Aliens), it was a nigh-on classic.'
Digital Spy- 'A Town Called Mercy' is a more straightforward adventure than Whithouse's last Who script but it's no less enjoyable for it. Rich with emotion and bolstered by strong guest performances, this is one Wild West adventure that certainly isn't shooting blanks.
Overnight ratings are in too- 6.6 million- up on last week I think.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
No takers for a Town Called Mercy?- it will disappear soon you can be sure of that.
This from Gallifrey Base, interesting as it shows how much, more than most BBC shows, Doctor Who time shifts in viewing figures over the years as other means of watching have become more available.
Overnight Series Averages:
7.3m - Series 1: Overnight average (13 episodes)
7.2m - Series 2: Overnight average (13 episodes)
7.0m - Series 3: Overnight average (13 episodes)
7.2m - Series 4: Overnight average (13 episodes)
6.0m - Series 5: Overnight average (13 episodes)
5.7m - Series 6: Overnight average (13 episodes)
Average Timeshift:
+ 0.64m - Series 1 (2005)
+ 0.51m - Series 2 (2006)
+ 0.55m - Series 3 (2007)
+ 0.85m - Series 4 (2008)
+ 1.73m - Series 5 (2010)
+ 1.79m - Series 6 (2011)
The average across a season of Who has barely changed since NuWho returned.
Oh and the AI rating for Town called Mercy is in- 85- down a point or two on the first two episodes but still very good (the best rating for the day was for Casuality- a hospital drama/soap which got 88)

Re: Doctor Who [3]
I've seen two different trailers so far that give me 2 different ideas as to what the episode is about. Can anyone elaborate

I have no idea what its about really beyond the next time trailer for it at the end of a Town Called Mercy and the pics I put up.
I supsect we will get at least 1 teaser trailer during the week for it.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
ok I saw a town called mercy. It was blah. Do the assistants have a purpose? Only once did Amy help out, and that was done with a sulky sarcastic voice. I am SOOOOOooooooooo over them.
