Re: Doctor Who [3]
"While the Doctor was working in a toy shop during his eleventh regeneration, a redhead walked into the shop with an elderly man. The Doctor, seeing them, quickly pulled off his name tag and dropped it on the floor. The redhead introduced herself as Donna, and asked if she could please see the selection of baby toys, because her niece, named Rose at her granddad's request, had been born today. The Doctor turned away before Donna could see the look on his face, and didn't notice the elderly man stoop down to pick up the name tag from the ground. There were tears in the eyes of both men."

Re: Doctor Who [3]
Dinosuars on a Spaceship spoiler filled review.
- Spoiler:
- Who is a strange show, probably why its survived this long. It can be daft as a brush and as thought provoking as Shakespeare, it can be downright silly and unnervingly serious- and sometimes it does both in one episode.
The collision of the two apsect did not completely come off for me in this episode but more on that later.
One of the joys of Who is that probably no other show in its precredits segment could have acquired a cast of characters that consisted of Queen Nefretiti of Egypt (nicely explaining her disappearance from the histroical records) Riddick, a big game hunter roaming the plans of Africa in 1902 and of course the Ponds, with one addition, Rory's dad Brian- who only came round to fix a light, and put them all on a spacehip thousands of years in the future hurtling on a collision course with earth (and about to be shot out of the sky by the ISA -Indian Space Agency), oh and filled with a cargo of dinosaurs.
As seems clear at this point we are in a fun Who, one of those episodes generally called a 'romp', where it is going to do the sort of things only it can get away with.
And for the first half of this episode that is pretty much what you get. With riding on a triceratops, pterodactyils on a beach (thats actually the engine room) and other fun delights to go with the popcorn you should have for this episode. Moffat promised a blockbuster film in 45 minutes for this season and on that score this episode certainly fits the bill.
In a neat turn the group split in two, essentially giving two seperate story lines to follow making it feel much more like classic Who where the Doctor might only be in half an episode, or disappear for entire ones, whislt we follow the companions, its more a 50/50 split here but its nice to see again.
The Doctor, Rory and Rory's Dad go off to find the ships engines (and to be attacked on the beack) whilst Amy takes Queen Nefetiti and Riddick to go investigate the ship.
A word to the design here, the BBC effects team the Mill seem to be doing some superb work this series so far, and whilst the dinosuars will probably get most of the attention I particularly loved the ships design.
With Amy essentially leading her group in the 'Doctor' role we get to see her apply her skills more in this episode than in most, upon finding a control room she quickly gets things up and running "One thing you learn from travelling with the Doctor- always press buttons"- of course if Amy is the Doctor here then Riddick and Nefretiti are her 'companions' and when they start to flirt with one another Amy gives a knowing complaint "hey! I will not have flirting companions!" she warns cheekly echoing all those fans who complained about Amy's flirty personality.
But the flirting- here is one of the things this episode made me uncomfortable with. Riddick is a male hunter from the days of Empire- his attitudes to women are of his time and at first I thought it was quite brave they should show him as having such views- but some of the 'flirting' was not only suprisingly adult given the shows wide audience but also I felt a little dark at times with hints of aggression, particularly his lines to Nefretiti about 'breaking her in'.
Anyway back to the plot, yes there is a plot, Amy discovers the ship they are on is an ark built and piloted by the Silurians (this bit of the episode actually requires a bit of Who knowledge as I supsect to a newcomer it would not be entirely clear) the Silurians left earth to transport their dinosuar cargo when they thought the planet was going to be hit by a metorite, most Silurians went into hibernation under the plantets crust as seen in series 5's two parter or the 3rd Doctor story in which the Silurian debutted. Its quite nice to have a reason for the episodes over the top premise that actually turns out to fit Who lore so well.
Meanwhile whilst Amy is figuring all this out we get to know Rory's dad a bit more who is doing a very good job, despite befuddlement and confusing, at dealing with the whole Space and Time travel thing. Like Wilfred Mott from the Tennant era Rory's Dad is a great addition and instantly likeable and there is a great rapport between him and Rory and the Doctor and the three of them work great together, I am particularly pleased that he will be making a reappearence in a later episode and its such a shame we are only getting to meet this character so near the end of the Ponds time on the show. (And I officially now announce my campaign for an older permanent companion next time!)
Its about this point the episode starts to take a subtle turn towards the dark, with the introduction of Solomon, the episodes villian- and one of the best, nastiest, vilians on Who in a while- a proper hiss and boo at him bad guy. I would have liked him to have made his entry to the episode sooner just to have had more of him.
Crippled by having his legs munched on by dinosaurs he forces the Doctor to heal him before revealing he is a pirate and that the reason there are no Silurians left is becuase he essentially made them walk the plank- out the airlocks- in order to steal the cargo and sell it at a sort of time hypermarket.
Solomons crew are two robots he bought cheap, now old and rusted they look magnificant and are voiced by a well known British comedy act- Mitchell and Webb- and whilst some of their dialogue is funny I found they grated quickly- they have shades of Marvin from Hitchhikers and Holly from Red Dwarf- mixed with a sort of constent bickering and campness but they are neither as funny as Holly or Marvin or as endearing. What I did like about them is whlst they are silly and funny they are also completely deadly.
Unfortunetly for Solomon however the ship had other ideas and it requires two pilots from the same gene pool (Silurians are grown in batches) to pilot- otherwise it defualts and heads for home which is why it is heading for earth.
In the meantime Solomon, having found out Queen Neferiti is there decides she would be better to sell and kidnaps her, there is some more dark and not very pleasant hints of sexual aggression here.
The eventual solution- Rory and his dad pilot the ship as they are the same gene pool-therefore suddenly explaining the presence of Rory's Dad in the episode, it is a tad contrived, however the character is so much fun and he gets to utter the immortal line "I'm flying a spaceship and I only came round to fix the light!" that frankly I didnt care it was contrived. In the meantime the Doctor rescues the Queen, orhelps her rescue herself at least.
Oh I should have mentioned by this point the Indian Space Agency has fired all its missiles to avoid a collision- giving the episode a countdown to its end in classic Who tradition.
The Doctors solution is one of the darkest things we have seen him do in a while- he gets the transpoder the missiles have locked on to, puts it on Solomons ship and against his pleas fires Solomon off into space to be blown to bits by the missiles screaming "Doooccttooorr!" Now granted Solomon is as nasty a Who villian as there as been in a long time, but it is Time Lord justice, no trial, no case for the defence and not entirely necessary.
There is also a lovely but darkly underpinned scene between Amy and the Doctor- she is worried his visits are becoming further apart, that Nefretiti and Riddick are the 'new Ponds'. The Doctor reassures her and says she will probably outlast him, to which she replies jokingly, 'or vice versa' and there is a long and awkward pause before the Doctor finally manages to say "never say that."
The switches in tone dont quite sit together, it goes from absurdly silly fun like riding a triceratops that likes to play fetch with golf balls-
Doctor - do you have any vegtable material in your pockets?
Rory's Dad- No, just my balls.
Rory- {facepalms]
-to the Doctor sentencing Solomon to death.
So overall a tricky episode- its Chibnalls best Who to date I would say. Far more memorable than the dull 42 and more fun than his series 5 Silurian two parter. Its silly, its fun and its absurdly bonkers in the way only Who can be- and it has quite a few shades of grey and dark tones thrown in there too.
Haven spoken to a couple of friends with young children they say it was a triumph- the kids absolutely loved it- for the adults some of the kids stuff can grate a bit and some of the innuendoes and darker stuff for adults is either lacking in subtley or jars somewhat with the episodes overall tone.
But the darker stuff does feed into what seems to be the connecting arc to these episodes- the Doctor is sliding back towards his darker side again- travelling alone more often, visiting less- and with this episode confirming that he has been wiped from the records he is freer now to not live up to his reputation. The Doctor who sent Solomon to his death echoes his words in a Good Man Goes to War "Good men dont need rules. Today is not a good day to find out why I have so many" and more worryingly reminiscent of the 1st Doctor about to bash a wounded mans head in with a rock so he woudnt slow them down. Full circle? Not yet but I suspect that is where Moffat is going this year.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
Overnight figures are in- Who got 5.5 million viewers- its biggest rival on the main commercial channel at the same time, the Ant and Dec vechilce Red or Black got 3.2 million.
Oddly enough last seasons second episode got exactly the same viewing figures, 5.5
Mixed press reviews this week-

As the story drew to a close, the Doctor effectively acted as Solomon’s executioner, ensuring he was on his spaceship when it was sent to its fate as a diversion for incoming missiles. This showed a harsher side to the Time Lord’s character; yes it is not the first time he has knowingly been responsible for someone’s death and Solomon was probably getting his just desserts, but given the Doctor’s ethical stance, such instances can sit uneasily within the viewers. While it had its moments, Dinosaurs on a Spaceship veered firmly towards the sillier end of the programme’s spectrum; and while it showed that the programme can go to places that no other TV show can, it was ultimately a bit of a mess.

Well, that was fun, wasn't it? The only way this could have been more of a riot is if Samuel L Jackson had turned up. Fandom will probably hate Dinosaurs on a Spaceship. Yes, it was flimsy and, yes, it was pretty much a story built around a title. The producers have admitted as much. But second episodes are supposed to be fun – and you only have to think back to The Curse of the Black Spot to realise that this is the finest episode two from Doctor Who in some time.

This week was a more childish and fun episode before things start getting dark and heavy again, there’s only so dark and depressing that Doctor Who can get before it becomes off-putting. For those who may be disappointed by this week, there will be far more darkness to come and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship was gentle respite from the impending tragedy that is to befall the Ponds.

SFX
This was fun. Big fun. Slight and fluffy and silly, with the occasional creaky bit of plotting (how handy the Doctor accidentally brings Rory’s dad along for the ride when the spaceship needs two pilots from the same gene pool) but enormously entertaining. Tonally, it’s spot on, with director Saul Metzstein showing an assured control over the material. Sensibly, with ideas so broad and outrageous he reins in the performances. Only the robots (voiced by comedy duo Mitchell and Webb) are deliberately played for laughs, and even then it’s a kind of Douglas Adams humour rather than Galloping Galaxies (and speaking of Adams, anyone else think the wave generator engines and the “Argos for the universe” system could have come straight out of Hitchhiker’s Guide?).
(Dave Golder)
WhatCulture!
If you scoop up a pick-and-mix of characters and ideas that have worked before, fling them all at the page and keep everybody quipping back-and-forth then you might make a "fun" 45 minutes of television, but at the end of it – what’s the point? If it's bracingly original, remarkably structured or features a truly astonishing turn from a major guest-star then it may not need to be high drama. But familiar components don't get any less familiar when you mix-and-match them and clumsy plotting is still clumsy plotting even if you’re lucky enough to have Matt Smith reciting your exposition. This sounds as if I didn’t like it, but it was perfectly entertaining while it was on, it’s just that – with the whole universe to explore, I’m frustrated at being given hand-me-downs. But, you know what, if this is as bad as this series gets, then this could be regarded as a classic year.

Re: Doctor Who [3]
Skaro is not a lucky planet Mrs Figg- it was devasted by a long term nuclear and chemical war between its two indigineous speciaes- the Thalls and the Kaleds- Davros was a Kaled- the chemical and radiation caused the people to mutate- the Dalek project was originally a means for the race to surive the mutations and still function until Davros mucked about with the genetics to make them the ultimate survivor- so no mercy, no pity- and you get Daleks (Genesis of the Daleks)
Then the whole planet got if not destroyed then seriously messed up when the 7th Doctor blew up Skaro's main sun.
Skaro then reappears in the 8th Doctor TV movie when the Master is tried and executed there by the Daleks.
Its unknown if Skaro was still the home of the Daleks by the Time War- it was a screwed planet with no resources left- there was no real reason for Daleks to remain there save nostalgia for their home world- and Daleks arent noted for getting mistyeyed.
Plus of course there is no way to know where in Skaro's timeline the start of Asylum takes place- both the Doctor and Daleks can use time travel.
When thinking of continuity in Who its best to remember it doesnt have any- its a show about a man who alters time and space every other week at least, continuity in a fractally shattered universe is not possible!

Well I like dinosaurs in space! Sure it was kind of random in the beginning, but there was a nice serious moment between Amy and the Doctor that I found rather touching!
