Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
Someone got their hands on the video of the interview where PJ brought up the potential third film.
A transcript in case it gets taken down:
It's possible that Warner Bros. just bullshitted on this earlier because they didn't want to feed the rumor mill, but I'm still not particularly convinced. I suspected PJ knew such a comment would get people talking and wanted to encourage that. Unfortunately it seems to have worked since a lot of people seem excited about "splitting the second movie in two", despite the fact that the film has already been split in two.

REPORTER: Are you thinking of splitting the second movie in two?
JACKSON: We've certainly been talking to the studio about some of the material we can't film and we've been asking them if we can do a bit more filming next year, which I don't know what would come of that, whether it would be Extended Editions or whatnot, but those discussions are ongoing, yep.
REPORTER: (Indiscernible)
JACKSON: I'd like to shoot a bunch more material that we can't shoot. There's so much good stuff in the Appendices that we haven't been able to squeeze into these movies. So, um, that's a discussion that we're having. Yeah.

This sort of thing is not helping my crabbitness Eldo!
Not only does The Hobbit cow not need any more milking the Tolkien herd needs a much better milker. PJ isn't introducing people to Tolkien he is destroying Tolkien's legacy.

There there, Mrs Figg. No need to work yourself up into a petty crabbit fit. It can be dangerous!

I don't think I can watch the whole thing in one sitting but someone on another forum pointed out something interesting to me. I know there was some question recently about whether there would actually be a fight scene surrounding Dol Guldur. If you skip to 8:30 into this video someone asks Philippa Boyens a question about Galadriel and Ms. Boyens said that Galadriel would have an "extraordinary" role in "the battle of Dol Guldur".
I think this is the first actual confirmation of a battle sequence there. I had assumed one would happen given PJ's track record but the recent speculation to the contrary by Sinister71 had made me question that. He raised a valid question by asking what the point of another battle would be; but, well ... PJ.
Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
extraordinary role? maybe she IS the Necromancer, and the real Galadriel is tied up in a dungeon in Dol wotsit. The Necromancer has a cunning plan, and tries to get Gandalf to fall in love with Her/him so that he can get inside info on the WC. hence the romantic hair twitching scene.
waddyathink? cool hey? anyway at this point anything goes, its certainly not Tolkien any more.

I just tried google to see if any bootleg images of Tauriel or the bunny sled had slipped out yet. I couldn't find them, which could just be my lack of expertise as a newshound. Is security really that tight that there aren't any bootlegs from the screening?

I'm cured Mrs Figg!! I've been taking large amounts of my medicine, with extra medicine on top just in case. And I am reliably informed by my crabbit doctor (professionally and personally) that I'm now just taking up bed space so I have been tipped out the window and into a skip.
'Cover me with kisses, baby
Cover me with love
Roll me in designer sheets
I'll never get enough
Emotions come, I don't know why'
Sorry, singing Blondie songs to keep my crabbit levels down. Quite good echo effect in here. Fortunetly this skip is where they throw away all the medicinal buckie empties, should be some dregs in here. Aha!
Now what was I crabbit about again? Something to do with bullshit that was it! Oh yes, PJ and the witch! They were reeking of it.
No, must monitor crabbit- think of postive things they said ....they kept the bit where Bilbo passes out
- yeah but they have also stuck in a bunch of other jokes around it and a big long joke over the particulars of the contract- "getting turned to ash won't hurt much' quips one dwarf as they go through it - didn't I always say they couldn't write Tolkien
-...well there must be something they haven't mucked up?
-Nope, Galadriel- the most powerful person in ME, despite Saruman, Sauron, Elrond, Celeborn, Glorfindel, the Balrog and of course the one right in front of her, Gandalf. And then there's Gandalf telling her why he picked Bilbo- something in UT he don't come to understand until much later and not fully until after the War of the Ring was over.
-Well what about Bilbo lying to Gandalf about how he got the Ring then? Thats not too overplayed as feared.
-Yeah but "I found my courage?" how is that better than the lie he tells in the book, which is that he won it? Saying he won it is to put beyond any doubt his right to it fair and square. Its his first act of defending his right to ownership of the Ring. 'I found my courage' is wishywashy means nothing PJ pish which has been changed from the original for no discenrable reason to something poorer by far, pish my friend, pish.
-I really need to find more buckie in here. 'Hello, anyone hear me? Crabbit explosion imminent!' Must think of something good. Um, what about...Legolas capturing the dwarves and saying he could easily kill them all? Oh bugger, I panicked!

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
I'm working backwards through this thread and here's a few problems I see as I am reading them again, this is dangerous crabbit work only to be undertaken by a drunken expert-
1. Galadriel and Gandalfs releationship and the notion she is the most powerful. Well Gandalf is of the angelic order Galdariel is an elf. So that settles the most powerful right there- but more fundementally this alters their releationship.
'Galadriel acting as a reassuring presence for Gandalf'- except Gandlaf's role in ME is basically reassurance. He and the other wizards are tasked with galvinising the peoples of the world into action, with keeping up morale, with offering advice and wisdom. It is not until his return as the White that Gandalf gets permission to be proactive as a leader- before that he is the one who others, Galadriel included, would turn to for advice and to keep their spirits up.
It sounds to me as if they are turning her into a sort of ME mother earth figure-nurturing and wise- which she is not, whichever version of her history you look at she is a lot more complicated and a lot less fluffy than that. And also a much stornger and more individual female than that. This change seems to me to reduce her as strong female character by making her just an archtype.
"We did feel the weight of it being a boys own story,"- Phillap Boyen- that would be because it is you dozy cow! - it was a story for specific boys, Tolkiens. It is of its time in that it is an action/adventure, and at that time such books were thought of as being aimed at boys. That millions of females have read and enjoyed it however shows that include dwarves, elves, shapechangers and talking birds and it will appeal to both and the lack of females in the roles is not noted. If they didn't want a 'boys own story' film they should not have picked one that was and then shoehorn their own poorly conceived female interjections into it.
2. Abundant laughs during the riddles scene- thats not a funny scene in the book- its frightening and not a little sad in some ways (though more with retrospect) and its tense because the stakes are so high. Its not the place for slapstick or just because they have Serkis back in the gimp suit to give him an opportunity to run through his entire Smeagol repetoire.
From other (dark) hints about this scene ('with Gollum having his own back-and-forth with himself') it seems they will also play up their ficticous good Smeagol/bad Gollum routine- Gollum is very simple regards his schizophrenia- he doesn't have it!! He is not schizophrenic as such- he is obsessive. He has so obssesed over the Ring he can no longer diffirentate between himself and it, calling both Precious. He is also a compulsive liar, especially to himself. Sadly this sort of Gollum will once again be ditched it seems in favour of the dull good guy/bad guy routine once more.
3. Replacing Bilbo's book lie, which has meaning, with the meaningless 'I found courage' lie- why? Really why?
4. 'Rumors have spread that a dragon may potentially attack the humans. The dwarves want to do something about it'- I'm hoping this is misreporting. Which humans? Why would the dwarves be concerened about that? They havent shown the slightest concern about Dale or Lake Town or any oher human settlement before now.
ooops buckie levels low, crabbit rising- best take a break from analyisis for a bit till I calm back down. Deep breaths Petty, thats the way, now drink.... Now what was Mrs Figg whispring about, what's this? A rodent?........

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
just to add to your good points Petty,
1. Galadriel, she was dangerous and not to be messed with, not a hairy legged knit your own yogurt wimmins cooperative.
2. Gandalf was probably the most powerful as Gandalf the White and Sauron was more powerful than that.
3. Riddles in the dark was a dangerous game to the death, not funny, not for Bilbo anyway.
4. Can they keep PC claptrap out of the Hobbit? probably not, hence Tauriel.
5. Bilbo 'found' his courage, but much later while he fought the spiders, and Bilbos courage was not the hackneyed obvious sort, like waving swords about, but the courage of doing what is right and standing up to his responsibility even if it hurts a friend (Thorin).
6. the whole Smeagol Gollum thing was tedious 10 years ago and I dont want more of it please.

I think you hit the nail on the head here.

This is the scene I'm most concerned about. The thing is, if you're reading it out loud you can read this scene either way depending on your audience. It's brilliant writing, both scary and funny at the same time, and as I think you're saying, the way I read it myself has changed over the years. I'm more anxious about this scene than any other in the first movie. Can PJ capture the spirit of play in the riddle game, it's deadly seriousness, and the binding nature of the pledge all at once? [OK not likely, but I can hope can't I?]

'The Hobbit' movie news: May be a trilogy, third film from JRR Tolkien's UNPUBLISHED NOTES
In recent “The Hobbit” film news, breaking details from director Peter Jackson at Comic-Con this week may be having some “Lord of the Rings” fans very excited. According to confirmed reports from “Screen Rant” this Sunday, the director revealed he may extend “The Hobbit” from two movies into another trilogy, with the third part based off author JRR Tolkien’s unpublished writings.
‘The Hobbit’ movie: A possible Part 3 using written notes of Middle-earth from JRR Tolkien
“Screen Rant” first reveals this Saturday that Jackson did confirm there were several book scenes he was not able to adapt into the movie because of time and space issues.
With the main filming of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” finished—the second prequel installment is titled “The Hobbit: There and Back again”—the director may now make a third film from JRR Tolkien’s unpublished books.
According to “HitFix,” who first received word on a possible trilogy for “The Hobbit” films, this is Jackson’s official statement:
“We’ve been certainly talking to the studio about material we cannot shoot … I’d like to shoot a bunch more material. There’s so much good stuff in the appendices that we haven’t been able to squeeze into these movies. That’s a discussion we’re currently having.”
“It’s still premature. We have an incredible source of material, and we do have the rights to many of JRR Tolkien’s notes, and I have been talking to the stuido about other things we haven’t seen that might make into a [third] film.”
I suppose they mean the appendices?

Comic-Con Q&A: Peter Jackson On His Return To Middle Earth With ‘The Hobbit’ And How 48 Frames Can Save Moviegoing
DEADLINE: I recall James Cameron telling me that The Lord of the Rings showed him things that helped as he was figuring out Avatar. Is it a responsibility for you top guys to continue to move the technological ball forward?
JACKSON:
Why, as an industry where we have dwindling audiences especially among the kids, should we be content to sit back and say that we got it right in 1927?
Why, as an industry where we have dwindling audiences especially among the kids, should we be content to sit back and say that we got it right in 1927? And say that that’s what cinema should look like, same as in 1927, and don’t change a thing. No! The kids aren’t going to give a toss about the frame rates. If something feels immersive to them, if it feels more exciting, spectacular, sharper, clearer, that’s what they’re going to like. I don’t think any 17 year old is going to say, I prefer the strobing, the re-panning and the motion blur of 24 frames. Those 17 year olds are just going to sit there, look at the higher frame rate and say, this is cool. This is cool! As an industry, we’ve got to try and get people back in the cinemas. Whether that’s the way to do it, I don’t know. But I’m trying. It’s an experiment, but I personally think it looks fantastic. I think this time next year, there will be a lot of movies shooting in 48, including some big tent poles. If I had a dollar to place a wager, I’d place my dollar there.

Maybe people arent going to cinemas because they cost a fortune, and the cost increases every time they 'innovate', a lot of folks find the seats uncomfy, the 3D glasses uncomfortable (especially if you already wear glasses) and more importantly- there is no content in what you are seeing as they mistakenly try to chase audiences with more and more spectacle and less and less content and quality writing.

Some people might call me a "Tolkien Liberal", but I'm still no "PJ apologist" - "because of time and space issues." - sorry mate, but you brought that one upon yourself

Re: Countdown to Release | SPOILER THREAD
According to “HitFix,” who first received word on a possible trilogy for “The Hobbit” films, this is Jackson’s official statement:
“We’ve been certainly talking to the studio about material we cannot shoot … I’d like to shoot a bunch more material. There’s so much good stuff in the appendices that we haven’t been able to squeeze into these movies. That’s a discussion we’re currently having.”
Bwahahaha. He's already stretching a 300 page book into 5-6 hours of movie (plus Extended Editions). He's not even trying to give decent justifications anymore.
“It’s still premature. We have an incredible source of material, and we do have the rights to many of JRR Tolkien’s notes, and I have been talking to the stuido about other things we haven’t seen that might make into a [third] film.”
I suppose they mean the appendices?
Lolwut. They have the rights to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and nothing else. Of course, that didn't stop them from "drawing inspiration" from other stuff in LOTR, but they were never this brazen about it. I hope that they just misspoke and meant the Appendices but I don't see how that could possibly be considered unpublished.
If they really do start raiding stuff they don't have the legal right to I hope that Christopher Tolkien sues their asses off just on principle. I don't care if the movies turn out good or not, they need to respect the legal situation. I shudder to think how many PJ fanboys would defend them if they did that
EDIT: Er, that came off as much more angry than I intended. I blame a thread on a different forum full of Christopher Tolkien- and book-bashing that I was posting in earlier.

Glad that you see the light this time. I do wonder how many LOTR defenders are going to turn on PJ once The Hobbit actually fits. I think the CinemaCon footage was a turning point, at least on this forum. Not so much because of the negative reaction to 48fps but because of stuff like the bunnysled and the bird shit beard. Since then we seem to have taken a turn for the cynical, except for Petty, who has of course been a cynic since the very beginning.
