Rodney Bewes died last week. Always liked him, was great in the 70s show. Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads.

Re: RIP
kind of sad we have a forum thread only dedicated to people who has died.. we don't even talk alot about it, just a lot of announcements... that's kinda sad
Re: RIP
yes, it is sad. Ive been deliberately skipping past this thread Seems its this part of the year people are popping off more than Summer or Spring. Makes for a reflective Christmas.

Re: RIP
{{Better than not remebering these folk- and the happiness or effect they had on lives.
Sad to see Rodney Bewes died, I was to young for the Likely Lads but I used to watch Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads with my Dad as a kid. Like a lot of 70's stuff it had that odd mix of humour and harsh social reality of a pretty grim time.
Great theme tune too. }}}

Re: RIP
I concur with the sentiment above, but a recent death that hit me a bit awkwardly was that of Ursula K. Le Guin. I went through the Earthsea saga this summer, and while it was written with a YA audience in mind, it was certainly something very special. (The Ghibli movie, while gorgeously animated, did not capture it at all.)

Re: RIP
I've read a number of works by Ursula LeGuin, but not the EarthSea trilogy. I think her thinking was strongly influenced by her anthropologist parents.

Re: RIP
I'd recommend it, it creates its complete own fantasy world, while keeping things very simple. It is something special. Actually it is more than a triology now, as she wrote an additional two novels, Tehanu and The Other Wind, and several related short stories.

Re: RIP
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/jan/25/ursula-le-guin-david-mitchell-earthsea?Meeting your idols is a risky business – as Flaubert notes, the gold paint tends to come off on your fingers – but my 90 minutes chatting with Ursula only convinced me that the gold was genuine. She was not a glad sufferer of fools, it was clear, and you’d not want to cross her, but her graciousness that afternoon was unflagging. I gushed, of course. I told her how her Earthsea books had, as a boy, shown me how I wanted to spend my life – crafting worlds as real, as full and as irresistible as hers, or die trying. (Ursula observed that you could get away with princes and wizards in the 1960s and 70s, but by the 21st century they had become “cute”.)

Re: RIP
{{RIP comedy legend Ken Dodd- 90 years old and was still performing to packed shows up until last year and had shows scheduled for this year. Dodd was never one of those troubled really sad and depressed comedians, he was and remained an all round entertainer and a classic happy clown to the very end. Thanks for many happy memories, saw him live as a kid in Blackpool, guy can fire out a joke a minute and burst into song the next and be doing an absurd act with Diddy Men and Tickle Sticks all before you've caught breath. }}}

I'll always remember his voice. "From the high desert and the great American south west..."
The show was not the same after he retired. Open lines was always entertaining to listen to in the middle of the night when I was a teenager.

And now Anthony Bourdain has committed suicide. I'm only one of the multitude who never saw this coming.

Area 51: The only thing that makes me think it's not a prank by the radio is the announcers seem bemused rather than putting on an act.

Re: RIP
It goes deep when its something utterly special & irreplaceable. All the wonderful historic things that have been lost, not just in this awful fire but, over time, & often caused by people who couldn't give a shit about wonderous, beautiful, exciting creations that no one will ever see again only on fecking Google. Sometimes I feel we are left with a cold, sterile, dead in the heart world.
