Norc was a fixture all right. Up until now she had actually calmed down quite a bit, but the old Norc is peeking out a bit. About damn time, too. Things were getting boring.

Re: RIP
RIP Warren Mitchell.
A great character actor. Probably will be best remembered for creating Alf Garnett alongside the brilliant writer Speight.
US folks probably wont know him but may be aware of the US version of the character, Archie Bunker. But nothing touches the original. And certainly not for its social critique of its times.
A typical example of both Warrens characterisation and the denseness of Spreight's writing, and the entire thing taking place around 1 table.

Oh dear gawd !! Him now He was good for tv, people despise him for his "Alf hates Blacks" but, it brought that subject to the forefront & made people think.

Re: RIP
Folks that think those shows were racist are missing the point. Everyone involved from writer to actors were socialist lefties.
The point was to talk honestly about these things as people were, and show up the fallacies in the racist arguments like Alf's. As well as to deal head on with the generational gap and the political gap between the dying out 'Queen and Country, Empire' bigoted and closed off mindset and the emergent tolerance mindset of the 60's.
That it was also possible to feel sympathetic towards Alf and to identify with his inability to let go of of the things he thinks define him, and his rants against a world that keeps changing around him, is testament to the writing and performance. But it doesn't dilute the message which is clearly one of tolerance.

Carol O'Connor was never able to shake off the Archie Bunker character associations either.

Re: RIP
Warren Mitchell did well in theatre roles- right up until a few years ago he was still appearing on stage in the West End.
But he was definitely best known by the public for Alf, and was still doing the character on and off years later (this is from 1997, he first played the character in 1965) -

Re: RIP
Actually thats hit me like a brick. Bowie was one of those artists I grew up with. Ive watched him in films, on late night chat shows etc. He narrated the beginning of that sweet Christmas cartoon "The Snowman". He was the one guy I never got tired of. I watched his debut on "The Old Grey Whistle Test" with whispering Bob Harris. His songs were great, his performances were great, I liked his voice & yes, I am having a "rose tinted glasses" moment, Im stunned, bloody cancer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: RIP
Bugger.
I've never really been into music of any genre, but Bowie was clearly a very, very talented singer (I was actually more familiar with his acting work-Labyrynth and The Prestige spring to mind as classic films) and a hugely influential performer, 69 was too young, RIP Ziggy Stardust.
You'll be missed, but certainly not forgotten.
