Re: Harry Potter
Exactly 10 years ago today (Nov. 16), Harry Potter first came to movie screens around the world. Whatever else your thoughts on the first film (and there's plenty to criticize about it), it's pretty remarkable that it's been so long but also that the franchise has thrived consistently in the time since then. This year has had a lot of notable HP moments for me, personally, and I just wanted to mention this particular milestone.
Re: Harry Potter
I remember Eldo, they thought it would take a bit of gloss off the first lotr movie. But as we all no now it didnt
Doesnt it come out on DVD(blu-ray) today ?

Re: Harry Potter
I like to think that HP and LOTR proved that there's room for lots of fantasy movies in this world. I'm not sure when it comes out in Australia, but in the U.S. the last DVD (and the first of many, many 8-film DVD collections) came out on 11/11/11. The UK has to wait until December 2 though, IIRC.

Re: Harry Potter
Ringdrotten, I have to say I totally agree!
There are sooo many funny moments in the book which are totally left out and non of the changes they've done to the storyline have been for the better. Some of the actors are great, mcGonagall and Snape for instance and the main actors have improved over the years, but some are terrible (like Ginny Weasly and that kid who says "I'll believe you, Harry" or something like thet, terrible! aaah! my eyes!)
BUT I am still going to by the full set with all the 8 movies...

Re: Harry Potter
I asked for Deathly Hallows Part 2 on DVD for Christmas to complete my collection, but I ended up getting it on Blu-ray along with a Blu-ray player quite unexpectedly. DH2 was thus the first movie I watched on Blu-ray and the quality really is quite stunning. Maybe on day I'll get a box set with the rest of the HP films on Blu-ray. It is rather disappointing though that it took the HP series so long to reach the level of visual/SFX quality that the LOTR films had, though. Not to say that the early HP films were bad, but I didn't think they were up to the same standard. Then again, LOTR was ahead of its time in general.

Re: Harry Potter
I finally know why (for all it's merits) I can't get into HP!
It lacks 'poetry'...
Tolkien's Middle Earth is a long prose poem (embued with Faery, and smoothly and intelligibly done), while HP is a rollicking fantasy adventure, full of creativity and 'knowledge' of all things historical (including myth and legend), but NO poetic sensibility in sight! So obvious to me now the penny has dropped!

Re: Harry Potter
maybe not Orwell, but it does have an element of faerie to it, the dark and dangerous side in a way, the death of the Unicorn is an example, only in the real faerie could a creature so pure die a horrible death, the combination of beauty and death is very faerie? isnt it?, HP does weave its magic when you read it, well it did for me anyway, I felt it stronger than for almost any other 'fantasy' book apart from Tolkien. In fact they are the only ones apart perhaps for the books of Alan Garner to have a real sense of it, but thats just my opinion of course.

I agree, Mrs. Figg, they are excellent books (in spite of their innumerable inconsistencies), and I'll keep reading them for years to come

I agree about Garner but not Rowling - this is not to say Rowling's aren't good in their own way, they just don't move me. I only got through the first three though. Does the Hermione and Ron romance develop in any moving way as the books proceed? The only part I liked (a lot) in the movies was their developing relationship. Though the last movie missed an opportunity I think - a bit limp at the end.

Re: Harry Potter
Dont judge by the films after the fourth one, they were absolute crap, I hate what Yates did to HP, when he took over he destroyed the atmosphere and made them boring which in a fantasy film is unforgivable, the only thing that saved the films were the performances of Imelda Staunton as Dolores Umbridge and Jim Broadbent as Horace Slughorn without them two whole films would have sunk into tedious banality, thats how bad they are. He is so banal and unsubtle as a director that he actually used physical darkness to illustrate the 'darkness' of the storyline, I mean does he think we are complete idiots or what. Why would you make the film so dark you can hardly see anything to denote the desperation of the story?, take Whicker Man, it uses bright Summer days full of sunshine, yet the film has a heart of darkness and is all the scarier for it. If Yates makes Dr Who it will be a disaster.

Awesomeness! I can't wait to hear what you guys think of it. Also, JKR confirmed on her website that she's officially working on the Harry Potter encyclopedia now too! I haven't been this excited about HP stuff for several months now.

Re: Harry Potter
I liked all the later movies - to a point - though the last was boring, yes. Hermione and Ron were interesting. The rest - fill.
