Does it say in the book anywhere if any of the hobbits actually lost weight? I know they all changed in appearance and Merry and Pippin became stronger and taller, but Sam and Frodo must have lost a ton of weight!

I am pretty almost quite somewhat certain that weightloss is mentioned in the Hobbit and LOTR, if not in both than at least in one. Can't quite remember their exact words though...

yes! (pickin up the thread because I dunno why it has died out!) Frodo and Sam definitely ran out of food and I am pretty confident (but too lazy to grab my book and look it up and find something to quote) that it was mentioned that Frodo at least was much thinner. I am also confident Tolkien said the hobbits looked better (as in more handsome and well, not so round about the waist if you know what I mean, as most hobbits).
