Been very quiet around the forum the last couple of days, what with Odo off helping Mirabella with her Sergeant thing and Biffo doing a runner to the mines over the Porgy affair (incident! I meant incident!) and Wisey has a notice on his gate saying "No admittance I'm on Channeling Business."
But where is everyone else? All hooked watching Doctor Who at least I hope! Very Happy

Loved that episode. How about you Ringdrotten? Gt round to it yet?- anything that can appeal to such finely diverse minds as GB, Odo, Orwell, Kafria and Squach must be worth a go! Wink

Nah-get it over with incase its disappointing! The second time will be better! (actually that might be true -I find it hard to judge how this series is a launching point for new viewers- it will be interesting to see what you make of it-now if I can just persuade Eldo- he's American, he needs Doctor Who in his life even more!)

Doctor Who - Page 8 Empty Re: Doctor Who

Post by Kafria Sat Jun 04, 2011 10:02 am

You have got to be kidding! Shocked

One of the best episodes of this series by far!! And no, he dosen't want his wheels that way. This is about the very special freedom the Tardis gives him and the strange symbiotic relationship the two have, how many times has she deposited him in the heart of the action when he had no intenetion of being there? How many times has she rescued him in the nick of time? How many times has he brought her back to life (something smith himself memorably did at the start of his run)?

As to Amy v River. I think you have it wrong! Amy is refreshing in that she isn't in love with him (even the seduction attempt was about excitment and lust), Amy sees what Rose and Martha refused to, that while the doctor is fascinating and incredible, he is separate (not a great way to say what I mean but the best I can do right now). Partially I think it is that all too human thing of wanting someone who has you as the centre of their universe and no one will ever be that for the doctor, whereas she is everything to Rory. Personally I love that we have Rory along as a bona fide companion and love how they are expanding on that this series, he is as interested as Amy in what is happening himself and not just a tag along, making more of his own decisions. Equally the Doctor does not get involved with companions, as he knows how fleeting and heart breaking that would be on both sides with one of his human companions. It is why he does what he does for Rose, gives what he can because what they both want is impossible. River is different, the mutual time travel means things are spread over a longer time scale, the moving in reverse means that things have already happened and negates any carefully laid boundaries and lets not forget the attraction of meeting someone who knows so much he dosen't at this stage (particularly for the doctor who is used to being the one knowing everything!). Intrigue is often a precusor to attraction, you have to be interested enough to find out about someone first!

(Personally, I'm wondering if you are transfering personal frustration? Laughing)

As to those who still haven't watched this..... get on with it. I think the first episode of this series would make a good jumping in point, you see the current established companions, their interaction with each other and the doctor and the start of the overreaching story arc without needing too much of the back story! As to the story being not for kids, I got into the current run as Squach insisted on watching it every week and still does. We record it every week too and then she sits and watches confidential to follow, but I'll leave her to comment on if she thinks this series is any better or wrose than the ones that came before (she loved the last one!)

Shocked Well you could knock me down with a feather GB- I did not expect that response to the Doctor's Wife episode from you- I thought you would love it as an old Whovian like myself. I really don't see what you are taking issue with here.

I'm with Kafria on this. The Gaiman episode was beautiful, witty, touching and full of nice touches to long term fans- if I could fault it I would say House was a bit underdeveloped as a bad guy but thats about it- the rest was wonderful stuff.

And surely now you have to admit there is nothing between the Doctor and Amy, he doesn't lust after her, he has the Tardis as a companion and River for, well whatever it turns out to be. Kafria's summing up of the situation is spot on in my view. Sorry GB but I think you may be transpalnting your own desires towards Amy (and who could blame you) onto the good Doctor!

Just preparing for tonights midseason finale- got friends coming round to watch it. Can't wait- I find it astonishing this show can make me as giddy and as excited to see as it did when I was 10. Very Happy Theres other tv I like and look forward too, but nothing else gives me the tingles like it does.

"As to those who still haven't watched this..... get on with it."- Kafria.

Indeed! I second that! Very Happy

Just watched the finale. Decided to not say anything plot wise so soon, as it would all be spoilers galore! Shocked
It resolved more than I thought it would, I expected it to be left on an agonizing cliff hanger but it ended at what felt like a natural point in the story (bit like breaking FotR in two at Rivendell) whilst still leaving plenty hanging overall to leave me wanting more.

Things I noticed but which weren't brought up or resolved- the insignia of the Headless Monks looks very like the greek symbol for Omega- he's still my fav for the big baddie of the piece behind it all. It was also the insignia on the religious fighting soldiers in last series Weeping Angels two-parter. They it would seem are the people who run the Stormgage facility River has been in prison in all this time, and they seem to be the same army that are with the Monks in this episode.

And this is for GB as its in refrence to our earlier disagreement about Tennants run as the Doctor and my contenion that the Doctor had become too Messianic, too much of the angst and On Coming Storm. Perhaps one of the reasons I have enjoyed Moffats run so much he seems to have a similar take on it as me, and tonights episode dealt with the issue head on.

A cracking first half this has been with the Pirates episode the only one I thought was below par- and even it was probably great if you're still 10. Very Happy

And hurrah for Rory in this episode. Any doubts about that releationship that may still linger in your mind GB will surely not be able to survive this episode!

Discuss away Kafria! But where to start?!

I don't know where to!

it really has taken my breath away. The reveal being fab, never saw that coming, but makes a whole lot of sense to the relationship and the mechanics of how that whole thing works.

I thought the beginning with Amy and her words was brill, and played on the whole 'who is she speaking about' thing without going down the old road.

I also get what Moffat was saying about where each of the characters will be in this point in the series, a turning point, Rory coming into his own, he and Amy seeing the impact on their life of remaining with the doctor, the doctor seeing that impact in their reaction to the events and recognising how he is coming to be percieved. It also, as I think about it, makes sense of a lot of Rivers quirks!

It also opens a whole other emotional can of worms for the conclusion of series plot lines and character developments (saddest of all implications for the family!)

The implications are indeed huge. Rory coming into his own was good to see, the opening was a cracker and Amy's speech was handled very well I thought, the previous time in the opening two parter, when Rory was listening in to her on the palm transmitter thing, she said "when you fell out the sky" then later brushed it off as jsut a saying, that always felt cheap to me, this time it was spot on and worked perfectly without feeling like you were being tricked or cheated. It fitted as a description the Rory we were seeing.

Unless I missed something through my (admttedly Embarassed ) misty eyes we still don't know who River shot or why she ends up in the Stormcage. And there is the whole issue of regeneration to deal with. Not to mention we still don't know who or what the Silence is that caused last series exploding Tardis and cracks in the universe.

No we don't although the obvious wrap up comes to mind, sure they won't use that... I hope! I think it possibly leads to a much more interesting idea of why she might have killed a good man from this episode.

Matt Smith was again stupendous. He is the Doctor so much for me that I continually underrate what an astounding job he is doing because I'm so completely sold on him as the Doctor I don't notice. And thats the mark of great acting, so good you can't even see its there. But everyone was great in this, the emotion was overwhelming at times and the concluions to the bit they concluded satisfying. Autumn can't come quick enough, never liked summer much anyway, just means warmer rain.

"slightly worried by how this series is turning my back into a thriteen year old girl!"- Kafria

I know how you feel (except the girl bit obviously)- but this series has got me excited about something in a way that nothing really has since I was a kid- and it feels great!

This was an incredible piece of casting. I remember all the fuss at the time about him being the youngest ever doctor and, what seemed like at the time, the sales pitch of him being an 'old soul' in performance, but it is sooo right.

He has the exhuberance and delight of a child, yet is never ' young' in his responses to anything. You always feel the weight of those years in the big decisions, he may make mistakes, but not be naive! Healso flips between serious and flippant in the way that I think only those of age or experience really do! And his giggle is pretty cool too!

Rory: Utterly worthless. A complete bonehead (but slightly less gormless as Rose's boyfriend). Adds nothing to the story except for being part of a love triangle. And you can't say that there isn't a love triangle, because it's been clear from the beginning that the Doctor is jealous of Rory, and Rory is jealous of the Doctor. Speaking of the beginning of the Matt Smith Doctor, it seems significant that he comes back at just the right time for Amy to be an appropriate age to be a travelling "companion."

The first 2 part episode of this season has an interesting turn of events. The little girl in the space suit that Amy nearly kills seems to have a connection to Amy, and Amy is pregnant...except when she's not. At the end, the little girl turns out to be at least part Time Lord. The Doctor sees something unusual in his scanner...Amy's pregnant then not pregnant; the scanner can't decide which. Rory and the Doctor are as jealous of each other as they have ever been. These events are all implied as being linked, and highly significant.

Onto the story written by Gaiman (who I generally happen to like for his imaginative works). Gaiman writes a story called THE DOCTOR'S WIFE. Then the story implies...no...make that MORE than implies...that the Doctor and his Tardis are in love with each other. Perhaps this scenario is seen as novel in the UK. But in the US, the love affair between a man and his vehicle is a cultural trope. I wouldn't have minded the episode in another context (perhaps during Martha's turn as 'companion.'

The End

Watched The Impossible Astronaut. Can't really say I understood all of it, but it sure was entertaining Very Happy From someone who's never seen a full Doctor Who episode's viewpoint, I got to agree with GB - to me it seemed like there was something between Amy and the Doctor. That, at least, was my (first) impression. So, where can I find the next episode? Got to see what happens to that baby astronaut Very Happy
