I dunno, I think he kind of wallowed in some of the Ygritte scenes. But sex in fantasy doesn't bother me, and compared to sci-fi classics like, say, Ringworld, Martin's writing doesn't seem so sexual after all.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
I think Halfwise is right. There's nothing troublesome about the sex and violence as a bit of realism in a medieval fantasy world in itself. Though if it's overdone it can of course become gratuitous.
I think George commented on exactly that in one of those interviews I posted earlier.
He leaves no uncertainity of the fact that he loved Tolkiens writing and Tokien as the creator of the genre of High Fantasy, but he felt that the genre in the hands of lesser authors could become dull and formulaic. And what he tried to do with his fantasy series was to introduce a larger element of realism.
Wether he succeded is of course a matter of opinion to a large degree.
It's certainly interesting to hear your perspectives on it.

There does seem to be a large amount of incest and pedophilia going on so far... although having said that I imagine that back in the days of knights and castles in Europe there was plenty of that going on and was probably quite the norm at the time.

Oh, I thought you were talking about Figgs video.
But, of course, they sent that episode last night.
Your reaction makes a whole lot more sense now.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Yeah, that's the one.
And I kind of recognize my own reaction from when I saw it.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
The joke is that the beginning of the story was so long ago that I don't remember much of it anymore.
And also that I'm not sure how happy they were to begin with, though clearly more than they were in the middle of ASOS.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Yeah, they were for about five minutes.
It's a heart breaking moment.
And having gotten a little into the first book I'm beggining to see that they put some effort, and perhaps not unlikely took some pleasure, in making it have even more of an impact in the tv series.
