Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Yeah, they are always saying he's the nicest guy in interviews and such. But I guess it a role it's hard to escape the connotations off.
Tom Baker said in some interview as he played the Doctor which was a heroic character that he never had trubble from anyone, on the contrary he was celebrated wherever he went. But actor friends of his who played either hard guys or evil characters would, despite being the nicest people in reality, have old ladies coming up and yelling at them in the street and some where even physically attacked by would be real hard men.
So it can't be all that easy.

Which (other) character from the series would you want to play?

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Yeah, I used to read a bit of Robert Jordan a long time ago. When I went to Ungdomskole. It's nice to see he and George had such a good relationship.
Hopefully George will get to end his series in a better way.

Just highlighting this. Peter Dinklage is great.

Some more George RR Martin:
I think he comes across as a really interesting person in these interviews.

Last year there was all a lot of talk about Game of Thrones and what was supposed to be "the most dramatic moment in TV history" - I just read
- G.O.T. book 3 spoiler:
- the part about the wedding at Walder Frey's castle

Yep, as I said earlier in this thread, whether you are a reader or a character, the worst mistake you can make is to fall in love with one of the characters. If he doesn't kill them, he does something awful to them.

The cable series counterpart is even more horrific.

And you were right If anything, though, I'm impressed with how he has created enough interesting characters to keep me hooked even after this. Kudos, Martin

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Am I right in thinking you haven't seen the equivalent episode in the television series, Ringo?
I do wonder if it had even a larger emotional impact in the television series as the character was a viewpoint character there and not in the books. So the audience would build even a larger emotional attachment there. Don't know how you saw that from just reading the books?
He certainly seems to like doing that... He talks about finding some inspiration for just that sort of writing in Tolkien here:

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
I haven't watched the series yet so I can't speak for that, but in the books you almost live through the characters - and when he then kills off characters like
- Spoiler:
- Ned and Catelyn, and also Robb, though the story is never told from his point of view

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Yeah, they were of course. And you certainly get that feeling from the television series too.
It's interesting to hear your perspective, because we are kind of looking at this from the opposite ends of the specter. You having read the books and I having seen the series.
Though I did just start listening to the first book on audiobook. Don't really have time to read at the moment, but I listen to it while I do other things.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
oh, is he called ramsay the thing is, when i first saw the actor it was in this sitcom with ian mckellen, viscous old queens, and he was their super nice neighbour, a bit naiv and just very cute and handsome, so when he rescued that dickhead i honestly was so happy and omg ASH!!! you're great, i love u, but when he started to go mental WHAT THE FUCK!?! HOLY SHIT!
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
I started reading A Game of Thrones yesterday. Not seen the series or anything so let's see how it goes.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Cool, Lance, I did the same -I wanted to read the books before I watched the series, and I'm glad I did. It'll be interesting to hear what you think of it. It took a while for me to get into it, but I was hooked soon enough

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
About 100 pages in and starting to get an idea of what is going on. It's ok so far... seems to be a filthy as the odd snippets of the series I have stumbled across.
Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
Filthy fantasy. It just doesnt appeal to me. Like offering me haggis with coffee poured over it- the two just dont belong on the same plate together.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
I have wondered sometimes if Martin isn't actually writing fantasy, but rather putting his fantasies into writing (if that makes any sense) I've given him the benefit of the doubt so far, and I intend to keep doing just that - his storytelling is excellent, and besides, most of the "filthy" stuff doesn't feel out of place as I thought it might at first, and a lot of it is funny as well. Right now I'm just enjoying the plots and the characters a lot, more than I have with any book for a long time. They might not be books I'm like to reread every two years or so like LotR, but I don't doubt I'll read them again sometime. Like I said, I'm enjoying the series a lot, and I look forward to going to bed in the evenings so I can get back into the story

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire
He doesn't wallow in sex gratuitiously, just as needed for the story. The only difference from a Tolkien style of writer is Martin doesn't obviously avoid it.
