Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
For me the time is right when I'm logged in, but it 's jumped from GMT to about six hours behind me when I'm offline. So, I'm guessing the default time zone of the forum has changed for some reason?

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
The forum has its own default time zone that it displays to anyone who isn't logged in. I'm pretty sure this was set to GMT, but I just checked and it re-pegged itself to Canadian Mountain Time (GMT -6). I just reset it now.
Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
Set the forum default to Ougadougou. Same as UTC but a hell of a lot more interesting.

Well it's the same as US Mountain time. The Rockies don't really care about national borders. But the forum was set to Edmonton, Alberta for some reason.
Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
I was on Tijuana time apparently. Man that must have been a bigger buckie bender than I thought!

Though I guess it might have changed since the 70s.

Hey BB - I see you attempted a spam run. Were you successful or did somebody jump in and cut you off?

That sounds fantastic Halfy. (Its the closest I could find to something green enough to convey the strength of my envy)

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
There are times New York rocks. Other times it drives you crazy. A friend told me if you last 2 years you never leave. It's been 7. I dunno, my dream is still a small college that has no #$&! pretensions out in the wilds of the Pennsylvania mountains, but unless I get my ass in gear I guess I'm still plopped down here soaking up the culture.

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
To add to the envy: the place is around the corner from where I live, across the street from the college where I do research and (very) occasionally teach. The musicians are all music students from the college, and I recognize some of the faces, which makes me happy. I'm finishing the 3rd glass of wine and contemplating a fourth. Hell, it's friday night, Halloween.

You paint a wonderfully evocative picture there Halfy. It sounds more suited to an idealistic moment in a Hollywood film than real life. My envy now knows no bounds!

That does sound like a great time. Especially since I just got off work.
Be sure to keep us posted on your smartphone adventures, Haldy! I must say, your phone typing skills are much better than mine when I was starting out.

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
The new iOS has helped: the advance over the often hysterical results of auto-correct is to give you a menu of 3 possibilities you can select from. For long words it's great. And it even learns new names and abbreviations.
And I'm not starting out, it was just the first time using the phone as a hotspot for my computer, which greatly speeds up typing even more than the improved auto-correct menu on the phone.

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
Sounds fun, Halfwise.
I went to New York for two weeks about.. eight years ago. It was in February, or something, so it was bitingly cold, and with New York as large as it is I found the experience a bit alienating. Nice people though, on the whole.

Not much of a spam run, I'm affraid. I think I was just tired after a day with my head in law books, and as such talking even more than usual. If it was a spam run, it was inadvertent.

So it's like that, eh, Halfy?

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
Right in order to get over my envy of Halfy I am going to start a fund to visit New York (by cashing in my empty buckie bottles) but so far I have worked out the cost of a passport plus the extra alcohol I will need to (a) get on a plane and fly which is unnatural and possibly impossible, and at the very least improbable and (b) to make up for the lack of buckie in New York meaning I will have drink four times as much to make up for- is about ten times the cost of the plane ticket

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
If you can get a cheap ticket to Oslo you can go from there to New York for about £90, it's ridiculously cheap these days.

Yeah its about the same from here I think, especially if you don't mind flying out at 3 in the morning (Im happy to go anytime after the pubs close)- which is why my alcohol bill is ten times as high as the ticket

Re: Scheduled maintenance today 12/20/08
If any of our European members do ever make the trek to New York, post about it here and I'll try to get time off to have a Forumshire meet-up since NYC is only a few hours away from me. We'll already have Halfy in Manhattan and Raddy in the general area if they're interested.

Good thinking Eldo, more folk there are to buy a round the less often I have to think up an excuse to get out of paying when its my turn.
Thanks Ringo!
