Re: Music
The original Star Wars I think is comparable. Not much else is, except of course the Ring Cycle.

Any score by Michael Nyman.

Re: Music
Yeah, film scores as we know them probably wouldn't exist without Wagner. I really, really want to see a performance of the entirety of The Ring since I don't feel I'll be able to fully appreciate it until then.
Speaking strictly of scores for film, though, LOTR is probably my all-time favorite. Star Wars is definitely up there though. John Williams has done a lot of fantastic work. His scores for the first three Harry Potter movies are also superb.

Re: Music
That's a cool site. I'm having a lot of fun going through the pages and listening to the different themes, especially as they appear throughout the films. I've learned to recognize a lot of them over the years but you always notice something new, and this guy has clearly put a lot of thought and effort into it. I'd never noticed that all the instances of the eucatastrophe theme fit together like that.halfwise wrote:Fun going through that musical theme site. At one point the guy says he can't imagine where Shore got the idea to have a theme to represent evil plans being unexpectedly thwarted (he calls it the 'rescue' theme) but it's clear he's no Tolkien scholar (or paid much attention to the appendices in the EE) or the word "eucatastrophe" would have jumped out at him. It IS interesting that Shore has a eucatastrophe theme.

I was fascinated by the imagery in the Draughtsman's Contract, and have ordered it on Netflix. Another fine film find from Forumshire!

Re: Music
I'm not a big fan of Fender guitars. Looks or feel. Was thinking of getting one a while back but after playing I got an Ibanez instead.
Jaguar Norc? Isn't that what Kurt Cobain used to play?
Edit - or was that a Jagmaster?

Re: Music
playing this in a great big symphony towards christmas (two days after the hobbit premier actually) it's super awesome, and we play both parts (so the whole video )
i recommend good speakers for this, and the first part is pp, pianissimo, which means kinda don't turn the volume up full because then you're gonna get a fright. u can see the viola part i am playing third bottom

BTW, that famous melody does have words. It goes
"This is the sym-phony, that Schubert wrote but never fin-ished"

Re: Music
Hans Zimmers new soundtrack sounds sometimes a bit like Game of Thrones to me
But it is fantastic nonetheless:
