The trailer was obnoxiously bright! No problem with dark and dreary. In fact, it looks pretty CGI heavy....

I LOVED the trailer, LOVED LOVED LOVED it. The song was perfect gave me chills, Gandalf made me cry like an idiot, Bilbo Perfect, Galadriel perfect, beautiful images Rivendell wooooooohooooo! dead excited now. The only little thing i didnt like was too much comedy dwarvage and I still dont like Bofur, but apart from that brill, I even like Thorin now.

Which one was Bofur? I'll admit I'm still having trouble keeping all the designs straight in my mind, though hopefully the actual movie will change that.

Just glanced through that, is Bofur the one with three hair spikes?

Yeah, I just rewatched the trailer and was looking for Bofur this time when they listed the names. I don't care for his design either. It's visually interesting but not at all Dwarvish in my opinion.
Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
After seeing the trailer and seeing them in action I like Bofur less and less, I like Thorin a lot more now, he has a kingly air about him, and I think there will be a bit too much clowning from Bombur, I never thought I would say that I would like Kili, but I do, hes not bad. for an elf.

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
I showed the trailer to my brother (who has never read any of the books, but who has watched the films with me several times). His reaction went as follows:
Him: "They are supposed to be Dwarves, right?"
Me: "Yeah..."
Him: "They're not."
And that sort of sums up my feelings about the Dwarves. NB Mrs Figg, I shared your "Mongolian sheep herder with the Pippi Longstocking hair" comment to him and he thought it was hilarious!

I hate it when I don't get the joke! {{{PM me Mrs Figg with an explanation, and IMMEDIATELY, or you're off my Erutide Card list - or, at least, will never be put on it !}}}

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
His mustache looks like a stereotypical Mongolian mustache (the sort you see in movies about Genghis Khan) and the flaps on his hat look like Pippi Longstocking's hair. In other words:

I'm surprised you know about her, Eldo, I never thought she was a known character outside Scandinavia

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
I'd seen a few Pippi Longstocking books growing up but to be perfectly honest most of what I know about the character comes from references in Stieg Larsson's books.
Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
Never read them, but it doesn't sound family friendly

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
They are considerably, shall we say, darker and grittier. To put it mildly. But apparently Larsson based the main female character on his idea of a grown-up Pippi Longstocking (if Pippi Longstocking was heavily traumatized, I guess).
Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
A grown up Pippi... hmm... It'd be interesting to see what she could do as a grown up when she could lift houses and horses as a child

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
I grew up watching Pippi in action and I guess I grew up to be like she would have been if the villagers hadnt turned up one night in front of her house waving pitch forks and torches. She was a bit of a menace and a true anarchist.

Re: More Hobbit pictures | SPOILER THREAD
It depends what slant they take with the dwarves during the movies. While reading The Hobbit I imagined all the dwarves the same, as one character even. Obviously for the screen they can't all look the same and there needs to be differentiating in appearance. This will help them stand out and create individual characters (even though this isn't what I felt like reading the book) but I think it might play out better. Sure I don't love all the styles (was PJ planning on remaking Time Bandits after The Hobbit?) and zany hairstyles but hey! don't hate so.
So yeah, a few of Tolkien's dwarves are basically exact clones. In my mind giving them discernable characters at all is an improvement. Bravo PJ, your brilliance strikes again, (or your art production team) great job improving on Tolkien! YARHA!
