I keep getting excited despite myself about the new videos and pictures as they come out. A large part of me suspects it will all come crashing down in disappointment come December 14, 2012, but it's cool to see the progress that has been made! Except for the Dwarf designs, I still don't care for those (especially the ridiculous axe-in-head idea). Mad

I still dont see Martin as Bilbo yet, I still see him as the bloke from the Office, and worse the naked body double from Love Actually. Shocked Looks like that petition to have the axe removed didnt work.

I saw this 70s Russian version of the Hobbit, with the boys from the Bolshoi Ballet moonlighting as Goblins for extra Rubles.

I'm assuming the worst being realistic and don't expect Bilbo's middle-agedness to be at all apparent in the films even if they don't explicitly state otherwise. I don't expect him to start off out-of-shape either; neither did movie!Frodo. Neutral

But bachelor, begining to get comfy in his middle aged existence Bilbo is important! Mad Otherwise there is no contrast with the Bilbo who returns.

I'm sure that PJ is perfectly happy to ignore that and/or insert his own invented 'journey' for Bilbo to take. PJ de-aged a number of characters in LOTR (including Theoden) and implied in a more subtle manner that others were younger, though that's more of a subjective perception. I just don't see him having the courage or the skill to present such an unconventional protagonist.

On the other hand, perhaps I've become too cynical and crabbit hanging around you. Wink

Unconventional? Well, Builbo has always been a middle aged character.... Millions upon millions know him that way! Risky? Bullshit! Ego ego ego ego ego... PJ, you've done it again... Rolling Eyes

I say "unconventional" in that he doesn't fit the (stereo)typical modern sense of a movie protagonist: young, attractive, and/or "hip". You don't see a lot of movies -- and especially not many blockbusters -- starring boring (if only initially), contented, and somewhat stuffy middle-aged men. I realize that is the essential starting point for Bilbo's character arc, but I just don't see PJ appreciating that and/or preferring it to his own ideas based on LOTR.

Poor old Bilbo he doesnt arf look miserable, its quite a gritty rough looking set up. not how I imagined it, but how it probably would really have looked, all dirty disheveled and dank, uncomfortable and damp, I would hate it, and want to be back in my nice cozy hobbit hole, with buttered crumpets for tea. Great news-hounding, Tin, but I can't get excited over such a grungy (as they put it) portrayal of Middle-earth. The Hobbit does NOT need to be made darker and grittier. Mad

I don't mind it being a bit miserable at bits and pouring with rain- it does in the book and Bilbo feels miserable and homesick many times- that should be gotten across. However there is no point either in making the first part of the journey seem grimmer and worse than Frodo's journey across the same sort of land given Frodo had it harder than Bilbo at the start.

It does seem to be the fashion these days that film makers want to make everything dark and gritty, like they did with Harry Potter, that was so dark at the end that it was virtually reduced to grainy looking pixels, it was so dark, and really crap as a result. I have a horrible feeling what with this new 48 thing and the 3D and the grunge, its going to look more like the first 5 mins of Saving private Ryan than the delightful and magical Hobbit we know and love. That's another reason to skip seeing the film in 3D: those 3D glasses are polarized, like many kinds of sunglasses, which has the same effect of making everything you look at seem dimmer. This is an issue for many filmmakers since it can wreck with colors in a film, but it especially problematic for films that are already murky in dark in their color palette. 3D turns bright films into dark films and dark films into impenetrable gloomy messes.
