{{ Quote from Moffat, he and Gatiss are interviewed for the recent bluray release of the 3rd Doctor and in a general discussion on Who had this to say, which is a bit hard to read as anything other than thinly veiled criticisms of the current incarnation of the show, plus he is absolutely right. }}

Re: All New Who
{{
But till the BBC confirm or deny any of this it all remains rumour for now, hopeful rumour, but rumour. }}}
- Spoiler:
- Across the series viewing figures went from very good, to average to same as previous few series got. So it ended up no worse really an no better off than it was viewer wise in the UK (international figures are different as new markets keep opening up, the important detail there is that Who is the BBC's top selling show and remains so).
Apart from fan backlash the main issue if there is any truth to it of course, seems to be around merchandising. Who is the biggest BBC merch product- and merchandise sales since Chibbers took over have tanked.
A part of that seems to be the female Doctor, figures sales have crashed presumably as most action figures are bought by young boys, and if you buy a female figure your basically playing with a doll. That might seem an old fashioned idea but it seems to be one affecting sales right now.
Next Chibbers promised a lot of new monster to make up for the lack or returning ones and to keep the merch guys happy- he gave them nothing- talking bandages, a guy with teeth in his face, um ok running out of things here- oh yes the P'ting- which at least looked marketable, unfortunately it was in one of the worst episode of a bad series so no one wants one.
And lastly the BBC were very keen on Who having a US style writers room- but (still rumour here) the writers Chibnal got weren't up to the job, and the reason he ended up writing a majority of the episodes in the series was because the other writers weren't good enough, sadly nor it turns out was Chibbers. But the BBC weren't to happy to find themselves paying for a room full of writers who never wrote anything.
But till the BBC confirm or deny any of this it all remains rumour for now, hopeful rumour, but rumour. }}}

Re: All New Who
{{ The viewing figures, as a comparison, for key points in series 10 (Moffat and Capaldi's last run) and Chibbers and Whittaker series 11.
Series 10 opener got a below average 4.64 million , which on the face of it is blown completely away by Whittaker debut episode which got 8.2 million overnight. First female Doctor made it the biggest debut in NuWHo.
Now the consolidated figures for that episode are slightly different as the BBC extended the period from 28 days to a full month So Jodies eps got a few days longer to add viewers.
Consolidated the series 10 opener ended up at 7.23 million, putting on just shy of 3 million viewers over the 28 days.
Series 11's opener ended up at 10.96 million, over 4 weeks, increasing by 2 and a half million.
So Chibbers and Jodie got off to a great start.* It didn't last.
*note its not as great as many like to think for a debut Doctor, its good yeah, but not miles ahead. As a comparison Capaldi's debut in series 8 consolidated to 10.76m A New Doctor always bumps the figures by a couple million. There are those it seems who only watch when a new Doctor turns up and at xmas!
By episode 5 of series 11, when people were seeing what they were getting the figures on overnights had shed 2 million to 6.1 million. But more notably it was only one of very few AI scores in all NuWho below 80.
AI is the appreciation index, and is how the BBC judges how much an audience enjoyed an episode. Episode 5 scored 79 (the lowest AI in series 10 is 81) the psychological issue of falling below 80 is just as, if not more important than the actual point difference, as 80 is the boundary point between 'good tv' and 'average' tv.
At this midpoint Chibbers series is consolidation at about 1 and half million viewers higher than the previous series was even so.
Jumping to the series end and the series finales now.
Series 10 consolidated at 5.3 and 5.6 (was a 2-parter) with AI's of 85 and 83 respectively.
Series 11 finale consolidated (1 episode) at 6.65, but it also got an AI of 79.
Not only does this fall below that all important 80 barrier twice in one series for the very first time in NuWho, it is by far the lowest AI for any series finale in NuWho.
But the big warning came with the New Year special, Chibnall didn't want to do another xmas day special, so moved it to New years Day, viewing figures wise this is a pretty good day (see for example Sherlocks ratings for that day of over 10 million) or a more direct comparison the 2nd part of 10's regen story which aired on New Years Day with over 10 million.
Moffats last non-regen xmas special (Husbands of River Song series 9 which is a fairer comparison as both it and Chibbers New Year are non-regen stories) consolidated at 8.27 million and an AI of 82.
Chibbers New Year episode consolidated at 7.13 million and an AI of 80.
Or to look at it another way series 10 episode 1 had 7.23 million and by the end it was a consistent 7.92.
Series 11 episode 1 had 10.96 million and by New Year had 7.13 a loss of close to 4 million.
So whilst on a technical level Chibbers Who has averaged over the whole series to being a slight improvement in viewing on previous immediate series, the bump of curiosity for the first female incarnation probably accounts for most of it but does not seem to have been sustained, nor was it as consistent as previous series.
And the trend from beginning to New Years special is clearly a downwards one and one suspects the BBC had hoped the bump from a female Doctor would have been more sustained and not lost.
Not to mention the warning signs of fan dissatisfaction in the AI figures let alone on fan sites, youtube, Who forums and sites like Rotten Tomatoes. }}

- So far nothing from the BBC- somewhat suspicious in itself given its spreading damn fast through the fandom. You would think if this was nothing more than a made up story from some reddit post or other they would simply come out and dismiss it as such. But its possible its just them being very slow to respond.

Yeah agreed, I was reading about those rumours earlier, even the Radio Times has only 'quoted from an anonymous source' denying there's any backstage chaos in Cardiff...but not explicitly denying there's any truth to the matter at all...personally I think there's a good chance some of it has a basis in truth, I never got the sense Chibnall's heart was in it the same way that RTD or Moffat's was, he took over later than planned and Series 12 is already delayed (with only 10 episodes rather than 12 to oversee a series it's notlike he's got a bigger workload than Moffat did), Jodie Whitaker is in her mid 30's with a burgeoning career and a 4 year old kid, I never thought she's be likely to commit to the role long term...

The owner of Big Finish apparently gave an interview recently for a fan podcast stating that CD sales now make up less than 40% of their income, also heard from other places that BF has really taken off in North America in recent years, apparently BF have been considering creating their own streaming service for a while but it's going to very difficult/expensive to implement for such a small company so it's a 'maybe at some point if we can' for the immediate future.

{{ Of the three NuWho showrunners he has by far the least to do.
Moffat did Who, Sherlock and co-wrote the script for the Tintin film.

Moffat had 12 eps and a xmas special.

Re: All New Who
His imagination isn't in it either. He seemed to rely on rehashing colonial tropes and stuffing as much diversity in as possible to the detriment of actual sci-fi stories. It was also very boring.

Re: All New Who
Certainly not very good, anyway. I'll cross my fingers as well that Chibbers has been tossed in a sack.

Re: All New Who
Rumours aboud.
Chib wanted a female Dalek. It looked terrible apparently.
Arguments with head honchos.
Michael Sheen maybe on the cards as new Doc.
Neil Gaiman maybe new showrunner.
All nonsense says 'a well placed insider' according to the Radio Times.
More on this as it comes in.

Re: All New Who
wowzer if Gaiman is head showrunner with Sheen that would be amazeballs.
I still say that the best Doctor Who they never had is Joe Gilgun with Hermione Grainger as his companion. That's my dream team.

Re: All New Who
{{ Allegedly that Dalek at New Year was a hell of a lot more like a Dalek than Chibbers original 'female Dalek idea, which was basically not a Dalek at all to the point where the BBC couldn't market the idea, and as Daleks are and have been the shows top selling alien toy since the 60's they probably didn't want to mess with it. That and you know, Daleks are sexless, genetically created in labs, grown in batches.
My favourite rumour so far is that Chibbers brought Rose back for an episode and had her romanticly involved with the Doctor (Rose never struck me as someone who would jut easily switch from fancying males to females)- anyhow the whole thing was so appalling that was the final straw for the BBC, allegedly.
Figg- do you mean the character from the Potter books, or Emma bloody Watson? Cause if its the later then no, no and NO! She cant act for toffee, its like watching paint dry, on a plank of wood. And Who demands a hell of a range from its actors given week to week it can be in any genre or dramatic style. It would horribly expose her awkward limited eyebrow acting. }}

Hermione would have been fun though.
