All New Who - Page 31 Empty Re: All New Who

Post by Pettytyrant101 Tue Jun 18, 2019 12:35 pm

{{ Whilst there's plenty fan rivalry over RTD v Moffat in fact the character narrative of the Doctor 9 through 12 is very consistent-

9- lone survivor of the Time War, believes he wiped out all the Daleks and his own people. PTSD sufferer basically, comes to reaccept himself through the help of the human Rose.
10- his friendship and appreciation for Rose grows into something closer to romance, but then he loses her and takes a long time to get over that fact. When he finally accepts a companion back into his life its Donna, who acts as his best mate and conscience, but then he tragically loses her as well and this puts him on a loners downer- he travels alone, becomes increasingly distant and resentful, eventually cumulating in him believing that he wasn't just the survivor of the war, but the winner, and as the last Time Lord the laws of Time will obey him - this doesn't work out well, he realises he went too far and then he regenerates into 11.
11 is on his last body, so starts young to make it last as long as possible. He tries to bury all the pain and angst over the war under a veil of humour and youthful energy, but it keeps showing through the cracks, but his healing process is largely completed by him ending up with a family unit around him as his support. This lets him successfully suppress the war and he actively seeks to try to enjoy his last life to its fullest. His continued hubris however eventually leads to his downfall and the collapse and end of that family unit around him, and he instead chooses once more to be alone and this time to live in isolation too. He's only brought out of that by a mystery around Clara, not a desire for company, after much to do he discovers he never destroyed his home planet after all but its hidden in a pocket dimension he is relieved of much of the guilt he has been carrying. He is then however left in the position of reintegrating all the bad war memories he had suppressed previously, whilst simultaneously fighitng a 900 year war to protect a planet. Then he regenerates.
12- is free of the war guilt, though not of his own part in the war itself, but he no longer knows if what he is doing is actually making a difference, or even for the better overall, this leads him to rediscover what it means to be the Doctor culminating in his final speech prior to regeneration summing up all he has re-learned.

Then 13 comes along and because there is now a delibrate break in continuity in character, not just being female which shouldn't matter, but the lack of a sense that the person who has been through all that is the person we are looking at- she seems shorn of everything the previous 3 Doctors experienced - like it hasn't left a mark or any effect upon her.
The choice Chibnal made to have no call backs of note, no returning villains or characters and to divorce the character from previous narrative I think is one of the biggest reasons so far 13 has not worked as a Doctor. She does not feel like a narrative continuation of the same character we have been watching since NuWho came on our screens, not in the same way RTD and Moffat era feel like the story of the same character told over 10 series. Things that happened to the Doctor in the RTD era were still having effects and ramifications for the Doctor in Moffat era. This gave a sense of continuity to the character across show-runners, writing styles and changes of lead actor and personality. And without any such connecting tissue 13 flounders out on her own.}}

{{ Some minor spoilery stuff for ep 2 of the next series.

And whilst the subject matter could, in the right hands be a decent tale to tell, its Chibbers Who so we know already its here solely because it ticks all the right woke boxes.

There is to be a WW2 historical episode centering on Noor Inayat Khan, here's her wiki entry-

'Noor-un-Nisa Inayat Khan, GC (1 January 1914 – 13 September 1944), aka Nora Inayat-Khan, was a British heroine of World War II renowned for her service in the Special Operations Executive.
She also went by the name Nora Baker and was a published author of Indian and American descent who was posthumously awarded the George Cross for her service in the SOE, the highest civilian decoration in the UK. As an SOE agent she became the first female wireless operator to be sent from Britain into occupied France to aid the French Resistance during World War II, and was Britain's first Muslim war heroine'

So yeah, ticks every Chibbers woke box, minority ethnically and religiously, a woman (of course as in Chibbers Who all men they meet are evil 2d shits like space racist or take your pick of shitty single Dads from last series- imagine a series in which every single mother you meet is callous, cruel, uncaring or self obsessed to the point of abandoning their own children, there'd be outrage), its a historical, and had a tragic end (she was executed along with three other women), though wouldn't be surprised if in this its not the Nazi's that get her but just the male patriarchy!

Going on last series a story which should be handled with depth, subtlety and care will instead just bash us over and over clumsily with its social message until we submit to it. Here's hoping at least that unlike Demons of the Punjab the Doctor, aliens, companions, TARDIS (you know everything that makes a story a Doctor Who story) are not surplus to requirements again in their own show.}}

I'm surprised to hear of any Who news yet. Isn't it not coming out until Fall 2020 or something?

All New Who - Page 31 Empty Re: All New Who

Post by Pettytyrant101 Mon Jun 24, 2019 8:28 am

{{{ Just been reading up on Vincent and the Doctor, from the point of view of Richard Curtis, who wrote it.
It was his first Doctor Who script (and to date only one) and he apparently asked Moffat to criticise 'everything and anything.' Moffat obliged!
Telling him the first meeting between the Doctor and Vincent was too slow and dull, and it started to slow. Curtis had apparently written the Doctor as very talkative, more like 13's inane babbling, to which Moffat recommended Curtis watch some earlier episodes as the Doctor was "rather efficient in the way he talked" - wish someone would tell Chibbers that!
It was also Moffats idea the creature be invisible.
I find the back and forth process between writers and showrunner a fascinating process.
Another good example is Jamie Mathieson's Flatline. He pitched that story to Moffat, Moffat loved it, but then as it worked out it turned out it was going to have to be the 'Doctor lite' episode because of scheduling.
So Mathieson came up with the idea of the Doctor getting stuck inside the TARDIS for the episode and Clara taking the full lead, and Moffat pitched to him the idea that the exterior shell shrink too and Clara would carry it about with her, which Mathieson thought was a brilliant idea and got to work rewriting his episode. The end result was of course a very good episode that was very well received all round.
I wonder if the process is still as collaborative today. }}

{{ With Who that can take a long time! We still only have hints and bits and pieces about what the issue for Eccelston was, or who with, or over what exactly and why that led to him walking out, and that was 14 years ago!
We do know at least a bit more about the process of bringing the show back and writing it however thanks to RTD's excellent book on the matter-  The Writers Tale -but he leaves out the real controversial behind the scenes stuff.}}

{{ Some interesting snippets from Davies book on how he worked with Moffat.

Ideas RTD had that never got to fruition turned up often later in Moffat era instead- these include Cyberman coming up out of graves (eventually used in Death in Heaven) and a Parliament of the Daleks (finally first seen in Asylum of the Daleks). RTD says he wrote the final draft of almost all the scripts aired during his era, except for Moffats (which I am a little surprised at as I had always assumed that Captain Jack, who first appears in a Moffat penned script had been at least partly written by RTD, but seemingly not).

When Moffat took over Tennant very nearly stayed on after Moffat tried to persuade him to by pitching the series 5 arc to him, Tennant told RTD, “It’s genius, seriously absolute genius… but I want to watch it, not be in it”. (fan first actor second Smile  ) }}

More 8 is always a good thing and I loved his run of stories with Lucie (except the end to the final episode 'To The Death' obviously Sad Shocked) thanks for the reminder Petty, I'll have to get my order in whilst the pre-order discount is till valid (BF usually keep it up for the first month past release)

*Edit, assuming my maths is correct, McGann is in at least 19 separate Big Finish audios this year alone Shocked

On the subject of Who I recently realized the last Series filmed round my way (well, within easy reach on the bus anyway) still haven't seen any of Whitaker's episodes, but perhaps I should, then visit this place and see if I recognize anything:

{{And now you've watched some stuff from when Who was still good, here's some news about the new series!

Actually if it weren't for the fact this is Chibbers Who I'd quite like the sound of this one.
Spoiler:
Its interesting that the BBC whilst claiming series 11 was an outstanding success loved by all, are doing a strenuous job to pretend series 12 will be different, and more like before. So far we have heard it will be structured more like RTD/Moffat era, its speculated there will be an actual arc and that Yaz will have one! they announced (noticeable after Chibbers last series 'no returning monsters' mantra) the return of
Spoiler:
, which comes with the accompanying information being teased to media outlets that series 12 will be 'darker'.
All in all sounds like they are perfectly aware series 11 was a huge ball of steaming turd set on fire, that there was no weight or gravitas to anything that happened, that the Doctor had no personality or character and zero development over the run, the companions a bunch of wooden yes men and that the new monsters Chibbers promised turned out to be utterly painful shallow steaming piles of shite. }}
