Re: Tales of Home [8]
Since heat rash/prickly heat is caused by clogged sweat glands, you'd think some kind of skin regimen would mitigate it. But I've never read anything that says that.

I get a similar thing on my back. My Dr gave me a big tub of AQUEOUS cream to slap on, it helps.

{{Took my italian beauty to Inveraray for her birthday and the weather fortunately matched the excellence of the day.
So first up the town itself-
This is the ancient bridge you cross to get in to town-
This is the view looking out from the promenade-
In this one you may notice a small building on top of the hill-
Thats the fire beacon for emergencies it was too far in the time we had but heres a closer look-
The Inveraray Inn-
And the interior of the George Hotel where we went for lunch (built in 1770- it feels a bit like being in the Prancing Pony!)-
Next up was the historic jail.
{{This guy is making a break for it out a skylight with some rope (all taken from the historical accounts) }}
And kids went there too-
If you were lucky you got to go outside, sort of, prisoners were allowed to spend some time, one at a time in the 'exercise' area- basically just two more jails, only outside instead of inside!
The Courtroom-
After that and a bite to eat we went to see the Castle, home of the Duke of Argyll and Head of the Clan Campbell. You get a nice walk there, the bluebells were out in force enjoying the sun-
Approaching the castle itself-
They are not short of weaponry in here!
Some of them rather old, such as these bronze age examples-
This must have been during the great haggis drought when they had to resort to making sporrans out of anything they could catch
Plenty portraits too-
A childs bedroom, well it is if you grew up in a castle!
A posh chandelier-
A posh chestplate-
Anyhow was a cracking day in fantastic company. Well except for the attempted damage to my sporran by the local businesses (we left one place after going in to just get a quick snack and seeing they were charging 10.95 for a BLT! Fortunately the meal at the George was excellent, bit pricey but not over the top pricey, and worth it. Anyhow if your ever in the area, Inveraray is worth a stop off along your way.}}

Re: Tales of Home [8]
What's a breastplate with the Napoleonic arms on it doing in a Scottish castle? Unless it was brought back as a trophy.
Fantastic pics as usual, Petty, and Inveraray definitely looks like a great place to visit! Beautiful location and lots of interesting history. I always enjoy reading your posts like this.

Scots had a notable influence in warfare during this period. Prominent sailors of the era included:
Admiral Sir Charles (John) Napier.
Admiral Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan of Camperdown, led the Royal Navy fleet that defeated the Dutch at the Battle of Camperdown on 11 October 1797.
Admiral Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, was one of the most daring and successful captains of the Napoleonic Wars, leading the French to nickname him "le loup de mer" ("the sea wolf"). After being dismissed from the Royal Navy, he served in the rebel navies of Chile, Brazil and Greece during their wars of independence, before being reinstated as an admiral in the Royal Navy. His life and exploits were one of the inspirations for the twentieth-century novelists C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower and Patrick O'Brian's Jack Aubrey.
Lieutenant-general Sir John Moore.
Alexander Abercromby.
Thomas Graham, 1st Baron Lynedoch.
George Ramsay, 9th Earl of Dalhousie.
Robert Craufurd.

{{ I dont live on an island!!! (well other than Britain) I live on a peninsula, but the main road goes over the mountains (follows an old cattle droving route) thats so brutal its called after the sentiment you have when you actually survive it, 'The Rest and Be thankful'. So folk tend to get the ferry across the Clyde which is a faster than going round, but less spectacular way, to get to the Lowlands and places like Glasgow. }}

{{Here's The Rest. And why its got its name, and why it still applies today.
First its quite steep there, so when the road winds up towards the heights, assuming your not driving in a cloud by then, it might be best not to look down over the roads edge! }}
{{Second it can occasionally be a bit breezy! }}
{{And its often blocked by snow (hard to get pictures of as no one can get there to take them!}}
{{ Of course snow falling on you is not as big a worry as some of the mountainside falling on you at random intervals. The Rest is usually closed for this reason a few times ever year. }}
{{And thats assuming a sudden new stream doesn't emerge out of nowhere! }}
{{But at least they can say they warned you! }}

Thanks for the link, Petty! Fascinating stuff.
It took me a few minutes to place it, but I knew I had heard the phrase Rest and Be Thankful before. Turns out it was the name of an estate in a historical fiction novel about the American Revolution (The Sherwood Ring by Elizabeth Marie Pope, which Baingil gave to me for Christmas last year). Though it was written Rest-and-be-thankful there; the family who owned it were originally Jacobites from the Highlands. I assume the author knew of the real location, though from everything you've said it doesn't sound like the real area was ever exactly a hotbed of Jacobitism.

Gorgeous pics, I enjoy your story like rambles That Castle is beautiful inside ! You had better weather than we did in the south here, all cloudy, windy & fecking cold

There was support on the doorstep as it were, in the Western Isles. But not around the central land controlled by the Campbells of Argyll. And they were heavily involved in defeating the rebellion alongside the government troops. Though records show that not all parts of the clan picked the same side.}}
1715 to 1719 Jacobite Rising
On 23 October 1715, chief John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll having learned that a detachment of rebels was passing by Castle Campbell, towards Dunfermline, sent out a body of cavalry, which came up with the party, and defeated it, taking a number of gentlemen prisoners, with the damage of one dragoon wounded in the cheek, and one horse slightly hurt. A month later the British government forces of Clan Campbell fought and defeated the Jacobites at the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715. However there were in fact a small number Campbells who took the side of the Jacobites led by the son of Campbell of Glenlyon whose father had commanded the government troops at the Massacre of Glencoe 22 years earlier. The two young men “buried the hatchet” and swore to be brothers in arms, fighting side by side in the Sheriffmuir. However the British government forces led by the Argyll Campbells defeated the Jacobites.
1745 to 1746 Jacobite Rising
During the Jacobite Uprisings of 1745 to 1746 the Clan Campbell continued their support for the British Government. They fought against the rebel Jacobites at the Battle of Falkirk (1746) where government forces were defeated. However shortly afterwards the Clan Campbell held out during the Siege of Fort William. The Jacobites could not defeat the Campbell defenders who had been well supplied. Eventually the Campbells sent out their own force from Fort William who defeated the besieging Jacobites and captured their siege cannons.
Soon afterwards men of the Clan Campbell who formed part of Loudon’s Highlanders Regiment helped to finally defeat the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

Yeah Lap it up It was warm like summer to begin with, March into April was amazing. Normally we have cold rain & cold wind, days are mostly grey & depressing but this year ? warm, bright, sunny, too good to be true
Now, grey & gloomy, back in the order of things.

{{{ Just to rub it in Azriel took these today on the local golf course (took the other half, despite living damn near it she had never been on it, she had thought there might be rules preventing non-members going on. I told her there might well be but I had never bothered finding out and that had always worked in the past. I think she was rather taken with the view when you get there and the run back from the angry golfers was very invigorating .) }}

It strikes me that golf courses would be ripe plums for the streakers. Surrounded by woods for stashing clothes, the right sort of frumpy folks intently concentrating on other things up to the point when you go roaring past....I'm sort of broken up to think of all the chances I've missed.
