New York city is considering a complete travel ban. Haven't heard a peep from Washington DC. Maybe they are completely buried already.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
First report I heard this morning was that we were already up to about 18 inches in Harford County, MD. I'm sure Baltimore City, and especially the whole DC area, have more since they're closer to the center of the storm and saw snow start earlier yesterday. The storm is supposed to continue throughout the weekend but I dunno if it'll abate. It's still snowing pretty hard at the moment.
My dad talked me into trying to sled later this afternoon but I suspect that it's too much snow and we'll just sink into it.

I watched the news, it was filmed round Jersey? I think it was Jersey, but anyway those waves looked massive.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
Yeah, the storm surge is apparently causing record flooding in Delaware and New Jersey. I'm hoping everybody there is safe.
There have apparently been at least five deaths so far but I don't know how they were caused or where exactly they occurred.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
Best estimate I'm hearing for my area right now is 29" (74 cm), but there's a lot of wind so many of the snowdrifts are much higher. We're already well over the estimates for this part of the state, and it's still snowing at the moment. Apparently it's been predicted to stop overnight and be clear on Sunday but who knows.
The snow conditions are great though, would be ideal for skiing if we were anywhere near a mountain. It's soft and fluffy but packs really well for both sledding tracks and snowballs. They've plowed our street at twice already but it's still pretty much impassable since both times they only took a single pass down the middle of it, and it's been largely filled back in anyway.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
It's a real shame hearing of anyone getting hurt, or worse, that said though, I have to admit it is a little amusing getting these more mundane updates on how you folks are dealing with this snow storm. It's kind of like seeing a kid taking baby steps, you're really willing it on.

4 inches of snow would stop Dallas cold yet barely be noticed in New York. 24 inches stops New York cold yet would barely be noticed in Oslo. It's all in the infrastructure.

We don't want the Norwegians and Minnesotans laughing at us.

If you look at the radar you'll see it's about to stop and there's nothing behind it.

True, although a meter of snow overnight would obviously create issues here too.. but.. day to day life wouldn't stop, you know.

Bingo.

Part of me wishes it would keep going but I think this is probably enough for one night and one day.

I didn't have my phone on me when we went sledding earlier but I was thinking about trying to get some pics tomorrow while the light is good.
Re: Tales of Home [7]
Also, the supermarket by my cousin's house (just a few miles from here) suffered a partial roof collapse, but it doesn't seem like anyone was hurt.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
It was way brighter outside at 10pm than I thought it would be (I assume it's the snow being reflective) so I took a few tonight, though I wasn't willing to do more than open the door for them.
Re: Tales of Home [7]
Those are convincing.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
THATS a snowy picture alright It always seems, & looks, so peaceful when its snowed, as tho the snow is shielding everything from harm, yet,in reality, snow can be a silent danger in its self. So pure, not even bird tracks.

In the Beijing Zoo there's a children's slide in the panda enclosure. I got to watch two baby pandas slide down it over and over. They really are cute when young.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
Yeah, I think this is the biggest single snowstorm that I can remember. Previous record holder would be the President's Day storm of 2003, but I think this one narrowly surpassed it. The double storm of 2010 might have had more snow in total but that was two separate blizzards three days apart.

Re: Tales of Home [7]
This is one of the best YouTube videos I've seen in a long time. Especially at the very end.
Edit: oh damn, it's the same guy who did the bike lanes video a few years ago, I remember that!
