The shellfish flavor is subtler than that of a little clam. More like a good fresh white fish with a little more saltiness. It's similar to conch actually, but that's not something most people have tried either.
I'm not a big sushi fan, but geoduck makes very good sushi. Lightly cooked its tender, but over-cooked it can get chewy in a rubbery kind of way.

It does look nice. Those resorts where you can basically swim everywhere make me think if pirate movies for some reason.

we are getting belted by Hurricane Doris at the mo. The sun has popped out but, the wind is raw & fierce ! Last night was rowdy, anything not nailed down was blown about. My dog, Simi, raised leg to wee & was blown over ! I was shunted down the road faster than I usually walk all cuz of dear old Doris

Re: Holidays and absences [3]
No doubt you know it's de riguer to ride the San Fran trolley clear over the hill and down into fisherman's wharf. But hang around there after dark - the bar scene becomes kinda cool in a seamy sort of way, and at night if the low tide timing is right the seals come in and beach on the rocks by some of the piers after dark. May take some hunting to find.
When you stop for burgers at In'n'out, be sure to get double meat. The bun/meat ratio's not quite there with a single.
I've never done Vegas, so yeah be sure to post a full accounting - remember it's probably all legal, and if it ain't, you can post after leaving the country.

Re: Holidays and absences [3]
That looks much more Balinesque, Chris!
Where will you be in China? I've been in China twice, before and after the damn skyscrapers. I don't like the intrusions, but I suppose it's made China more tourist friendly. I think China's the most amazing country I've visited, though you do have to get around a bit to take it all in. If you have the chance, don't miss Suzhou, the Venice of China, and also the source of the chinese garden rock art style.

Re: Holidays and absences [3]
We are a caught in 2 minds about 1 of our days. We are doing 1 night just outside of Yosemite so we can go in the West entrance day 1 and then North entrance and through Tioga pass day 2... then we are staying in Mammoth to break up the journey.
So... the dilemma is do we spend most of the day in that area and travel through Death Valley later on or get out early. I want to get some good desert photos while we are out and it looks like a good 6-7 hour drive from Mammoth.
Anyone been in that part of the world and have a view?

Re: Holidays and absences [3]
If you are travelling in summer you want to get through death valley in the morning. If you happen to have car failure in there during a summer afternoon, well...there's a reason it has the name it does. And all the cars that could stop and give you a hand will be through in morning, possibly a few in the early evening. Other times of year the time of day is not such an issue.
I don't know if you can still get a date shack at Stuckey's. Used to be the one stop on the one road, with a big billboard. For all I know Stuckey's has gone the way of the Brontosaurus.

Re: Holidays and absences [3]
We don't have to be in Vegas at any particular time. If we left Mammoth early afternoon, say 3-4pm, that would mean we hit death valley about 6-7pm.
Would that work or is that just silliness? We will be there mid-July.

Re: Holidays and absences [3]
Nearly hottest part of the year, only a few hours after the hottest part of the day.
Average high in July is 116 F, average low is 88 F (46 C, 31 C). I estimate a 7 pm average temp of 112 F (44 C). But there should be people passing through. It's a better plan than getting there at 3 pm. Bring plenty of water just in case: not just for you, for your car's coolant system.
It won't cool off quickly at night: the valley walls will radiate.
