An update for those who may watch: only the first 30 minutes is about LotR, then it diverts, then around minute 55 it comes back to asking questions about LotR.

But I'm glad I watched much of the rest - learned about the book "Justinian's Flea" which I just ordered based on his recommendation.

I was just rewatching the Bakshi Totally Screwed Over Dub, and I just thought it was easy humour when Aragorn answers Sam's question about who the Argonath are with "Those are Nazis...". But then I realized the statues are doing the Roman salute lol.

Thank god, something other than that dratted Who thread.

I never thought of it as a salute, but a warning: go no further unless you are okay being on Gondorian turf.

Are you thinking of the animated Bakshi or the Jackson versions?

All the illustrations I have seen is a hand up saying 'stop', not a Roman salute.

Talking of Romans, this is what they would have sounded like. and its not like Monty Python and his Biggus Dickus or Russell Crowe.

Funny, I had just come across that myself.  The youtube algorithm must be less individually tailored that I thought...or has general streams for people with the same general interests. That's not a new clip.

It is modern German. It sounded very modern from the little German I know, so I checked the comments on the video to make sure.

Well then the show is only half accurate. The Germanic tribes were not speaking modern German in 200 AD or whenever this is.

It's not set in England though. This is over in Germany basically.

True. But it is a German show, so it makes sense that the people we follow speak German.

That one common sense argument neatly trumps all the historical sophistication exhibited on this page.

That info too came from the comment section, I don't know anything about the show. But it was it was fairly logical to me that modern German ment it was aimed for speakers of modern German. It is a common way of doing it, like how Frodo doesn't speak English, but there's bits of Elvish in there. Robin Hood shouldn't speak modern English... King Arthur. Jesus.

Still not raised high enough imo. That's more of a "you got to be this tall to enter" hand. But close enough for a giggle, sure.

I think they are trying not to be too rude about it.  Sort of like when you are about to walk through a gate and the people standing there make that gesture and you're not sure if it's a wave or a command to stop, so you stop ready to make some polite conversation.  It usually means they have some information to impart before you go in.  The traffic cops often do that as they are waving through the turn lane on the other cross street - it means "hold on for now" rather than "STOP!" The difference between that and "you must be yay high" is about 20 degrees.
