He's right, I can't think of anyone else who could match Christopher Lee for that part.
But this dredges up old casting consternation. Why couldn't they have cast Patrick Stewart as Denethor? He wouldn't allow him to look the dotard that John Noble did.

That snippet came from a Documentary that was on tv the other night. It was all about Christopher Lee, his life, the films, his brush with music, and family I didnt know of. It was really good.

I did like the "Fireworks Gandalf, fireworks" one But seriously, it proves if youre not careful you can really feck up a film, I know the coven got things wrong but, with hindsight, it could have been a real big shitfest, I count my blessings.

I originally felt LotR got 80% of LotR correct, though Petty has maybe tempered me to 70%. But it's the best we could hope for given how fucked up the media business is. Look at what Amazon did with Rings of Power.

Re: Lord of the Rings Humour: Parodies, Satires and More [4]
Hmm, yeah 70% is probably fair I think. I've always felt that whilst Jackson didn't necessarily capture the central themes of the story than faithfully and altered certain characters more than he should have done, overall they are very well done films and broadly faithful to the central story, I've certainly seen much worse adaptations. Most of the issues I have with the LOTR films are due to Jackson's stylistic choices and occasionally misguided changes to the narrative, his heart and enthusiasm were certainly in the right place, so although I do take some big issues with how he interprets Tolkien it certainly feels like he had a very specific artistic vision, we could have got some soulness studio hack directing instead (look at how similar all the Marvel films feel).
But it could have been much worse, for all their flaws they succeed very well as action adventure epics and the general public seem to love the trilogy, it would have been worse if they were also bad films in addition to being slighly problematic as adaptations.
When you look into the behind the scenes of the LOTR films it is all the more remarkable they turned out as well as they did, Jackson spent 3-4 years in pre-production before they even started filming and even then they did extensive additonal filming/re-editing every year until the films were released.
Just a shame Jackson let the success go to his head and dropped the ball with The Hobbit...
Now I think about it, it is quite interesting that Middle-earth apparently has the technology to create fireworks (and Saruman's blasting bombs for Helm's Deep) so presumably someone somewhere has figured out how to make gunpowder...

Re: Lord of the Rings Humour: Parodies, Satires and More [4]
Good point Malick, In Arthurian Middle Earth how did fireworks and high explosive bombs come about ? Who delved out the tunnels of Shelob ? And the undergound homes of the dwarves is very impressive, but we are led to believe it was by sheer hard work of hands and tools that created Khazad-dum etc. Was the fireworks Gandalf set off made from the same stuff Saruman used in his big, black bomb just in different strengths ? Both wizards must have known the same amount of things as each other but Saruman used a purer powder seeing as a sparkler wasnt going to do the trick, and obviously Gandalf just wanted pretty fireworks that wouldnt blow your head off or burn your village down.

I like different covers to all of Tolkiens books. Ive noticed the European covers are lovely compared to our British ones. Ours are plain yet France, Germany and Russia have better.
