Re: Game of Thrones [2]
So, I still haven't watched it, but apparently they had Ned spit out "Now it ends." in a real cocky fashion last episode. If that is hte case that might just be their worst misreading of a book moment yet. Not only is it completely contrary to Neds character, it gets the moment completely wrong. The almost endless regret and sadness Ned utters "Now it ends." with in the books is one of its most stiring moments.
Trust D&D to fuck it up.

“And now it begins,” said Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning. He unsheathed Dawn and held it with both hands. The blade was pale as milkglass, alive with light.
“No,” Ned said with sadness in his voice. “Now it ends.”

I haven't seen it either, but I would have to agree with you on this point.

But bear in mind, it could have been the director, not the writers or producers.

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
I thought teenage!Ned's delivery came off less smugly when we get to hear more than three words from the actor, but I definitely wouldn't say there was sadness in his voice. I think the anti-GOT tumblr crew (can't remember which of them it was) got it right by pointing out that the Tower of Joy scene in the book was part of Ned's fever dream and all the dialogue has a sort of surreal, lyrical quality to it that comes across very differently when played straight like the show does. I feel like that was the bigger issue than the actor's delivery.
On the other hand, Bran stated that he'd heard the story of that fight hundreds of times, implying that Ned liked to brag about it, so that helps cast the line reading in a negative light.

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
Anyway, I thought the episode as a whole was pretty dull, as did my mom, who has generally been more positive about the past two seasons of GOT than I am. Tyrion's monologue about ways to kill time was pretty grating, but moreover there are so many more interesting things the show could have used those 3-5 minutes for than literally talking about how there was nothing going on and everyone was bored. Most of the plotlines didn't go anywhere that wasn't obvious from the ending of the previous episode or the 30 second preview we got. The only exception that comes to mind right now is Arya making progress in her training, although what exactly she is supposed to be learning or how the training is supposed to work remains almost as unclear as the lighting in those scenes.

This is a story the Ned of the books, (fuck, the Ned of the show, even) would never tell anyone. Like, come on, this is the story where Neds' children have had to hear Ned's war stories from people like Meera and Jojen and Ned Dayne. (i.e. he doesn't talk about this stuff, certainly not brag about it.)

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
I don't usually watch the Inside the Episode featurettes, but I saw a link to the one for this week, and in it Dan Weiss said that "everyone in Westeros" has heard the story hundreds of times. That's not how I interpreted the line, but it's interesting to know that was in the back of their minds (assuming it's not just Weiss mouthing off without thinking, which given some of the things they've said in those featurettes in the past, is not a possibility that can be dismissed out of hand). Clearly this wasn't the case in the books, although IIRC most of the Dornish characters who we met seemed to know it. Granted, they were mostly highborn, but the show isn't that on top of the finer points of social divisions.
Re: Game of Thrones [2]
Yeah.. not prepard to give them that much of the benefit of the doubt.. and.. they still got everything else wrong with regards to Neds' character in ToJ scenario.

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
“He dreamt an old dream, of three knights in white cloaks, and a tower long fallen, and Lyanna in her bed of blood.
In the dream his friends rode with him, as they had in life. Proud Martyn Cassel, Jory’s father; faithful Theo Wull; Ethan Glover, who had been Brandon’s squire; Ser Mark Ryswell, soft of speech and gentle of heart; the crannogman, Howland Reed; Lord Dustin on his great red stallion. Ned had known their faces as well as he knew his own once, but the years leech at a man’s memories, even those he has vowed never to forget. In the dream they were only shadows, grey wraiths on horses made of mist.
“They were seven, facing three. In the dream as it had been in life. Yet these were no ordinary three. They waited before the round tower, the red mountains of Dorne at their backs, their white cloaks blowing in the wind. And these were no shadows; their faces burned clear, even now. Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning, had a sad smile on his lips. The hilt of the greatsword Dawn poked up over his right shoulder. Ser Oswell Whent was on one knee, sharpening his blade with a whetstone. Across his white-enameled helm, the black bat of his House spread its wings. Between them stood fierce old Ser Gerold Hightower, the White Bull, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard.
“I looked for you on the Trident,” Ned said to them.
“We were not there,” Ser Gerold answered.
“Woe to the Usurper if we had been,” said Ser Oswell.
“When King’s Landing fell, Ser Jaime slew your king with a golden sword, and I wondered where you were.”
“Far away,” Ser Gerold said, “or Aerys would yet sit the Iron Throne, and our false brother would burn in seven hells.”
“I came down on Storm’s End to lift the siege,” Ned told them, “and the Lords Tyrell and Redwyne dipped their banners, and all their knights bent the knee to pledge us fealty. I was certain you would be among them.”
“Our knees do not bend easily,” said Ser Arthur Dayne.
“Ser Willem Darry is fled to Dragonstone, with your queen and Prince Viserys. I thought you might have sailed with him.”
“Ser Willem is a good man and true,” said Ser Oswell.
“But not of the Kingsguard,” Ser Gerold pointed out. “The Kingsguard does not flee.”
“Then or now,” said Ser Arthur. He donned his helm.
“We swore a vow,” explained old Ser Gerold.
Ned’s wraiths moved up beside him, with shadow swords in hand. They were seven against three.
“And now it begins,” said Ser Arthur Dayne, the Sword of the Morning. He unsheathed Dawn and held it with both hands. The blade was pale as milkglass, alive with light.”
“No,” Ned said with sadness in his voice. “Now it ends.” As they came together in a rush of steel and shadow, he could hear Lyanna screaming. “Eddard!” she called. A storm of rose petals blew across a blood-streaked sky, as blue as the eyes of death.”
It's beautiful piece of writing.
Shame about the show.

Well, it's not like there's a new book to talk about.

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
well I watched it. loved it, it was very Bronte Bleak.
- Spoiler:
- it was very melancholy and down beat. some would say dull but I would say it was beautifully paced. It was all about transitioning from one state to another and when that happens it sometimes isn't the reaction you would expect. its a bit like the depression and emotional exhaustion after an exam, after last weeks high, the aftermath has set in. John finds living a frightening and depressing thing, Arya finds nothing but pain and she has lost herself becoming Nobody, and Bran is frustrated and angry. The Stark children seem to be transitioning from one state to another, poor Rickon has lost his wolf, a childhood friend lost forever. The episode was as weary and angry as Dannys face in the widows hut. But it had to be like that.

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
Is Bronte Bleak a reference to a published work of some kind, or are we just talking about the Bronte sisters' legacy?
I guess I shouldn't be in here yet. I'm going to see episode 3 tonight though.

It can't be that bad! I hope. Episode 1 is going to be my lowlight of the season for some time, I imagine.
Wait.. do you watch the show now-a-days Bluebottle?

Nah, no thanks, thank god.
I might have, if I could have seperated the story from the books. But I don't think I can. I will constantly be reminded by the gigantic gap in the quality of writing and the difference in the sensibilities and message intended by the writers. But even if I could seperate the two, it would at most be a guilty pleasure, as poor as season 5 was and the beggining to season 6 sounds. But, then again, I did sit through the entier first season of the Shannara Chronicles..
