Holy SHITE!
...I wanted to say it was terrible, but on second thought it's really just middle-of-the-line dumb.
Just.. blech, BLECH BLECH BLECH BLECH.

- Spoiler:
The Good:
I liked havingDavrosDavos find Jon Snow, even if it brought up questions like, why didn't anyone else not in on the plot notice first, or "hey, what if they think Davos did it?" But then again, it's not like Davos and Jon Snow have much history together. Edd should have been the one to find him instead. Edd and Ghost, or something. Anyway, this was the one scene I thought, "Okay, sure" about.
I guess that's it though.
The Bad:
Lots of little things in the writing and direction. The way that Sansa has to look over at Theon before she can accept Brienne's pledge, and how she doesn't even remember the fucking words to say like she's an eight year-old child. Podrick has to remind her. I mean, what is that bullshit.
The obvious "Myrcella" from Cersei, just so we know what she's thinking about when "a ship from Dorne" arrives. Derp.
I didn't like hearing from the stupid Sparrow-king, or whatever he's called. He's annoying and that scene did nothing more than remind me of the fact that whats-her-face is still in prison for no interesting reason.
It made zero fucking sense to me that Tyrion would be all, "hey let's walk around in the streets 'cause that's totally safe" with Littlefinger. All of that conversation could have been done from a balcony somewhere on the Pyramid, and they would have seen the fires far more recently. Speaking of fires, is noone in GoT able to notice when people are lighting things up? Just like in Stannis' camp it seems like everything is just instantly-burning.
The whole "you have until nightfall to give up and leave the room" thing up in Castle Black was pretty dumb too. Like, hey, how great for them inside the room that they have all that time for the Wildlings to show up. I'm also sick and tired of seeing Ghost lick his (her?) teeth. Since when do wolves just lick their teeth all the time? Or maybe I just saw a re-used shot, that could have been it too.
Arya is being beaten up by the show-version-is-a-jerk nameless girl character. Wow I've never seen a training montage before I wonder how the fuck all of that is going to end. Stupid.
The Dothraki-as-comic-relief is kiiind of continuing the "It is known" catchphrase comedy from past seasons (before the showrunners killed off the "It is known" handmaiden character). But at the same time, it feels pretty fucking far removed from the Dothraki who went and just straight-up murdered the fucking heir to Westeros. Either way, it's not very compelling story-telling. I guess I should be glad the Dothraki weren't killing or raping anyone. That did make for a nice change.
Speaking of killing...
The Ugly:
Dorne. Fuck that. Fuck everything to do with that. It makes no sense to me. I know it's ridiculous from a book perspective, but is this even consistent from the show perspective? I really don't think so. I mean, the Sand Snakes and their biotch of a mother are all about... like strength in Dorne and starting a war with the Lannisters and vengeance for the slaughter of Elia Martell; and so they kill off more of their own family?
HOW'S ABOUT INSTEAD KILLING THE MOTHERFLIPPING PIECE OF SHIT LANNISTER YOU JUST HAD IN YOUR GRIPS YOU MORONS!!!!!!111!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wait. Wait wait no, that wouldn't work. Because they needed to respect the decision of their Prince. They do care a lot about their prince after all. They do honour the memory of their father by not murdering his brother in cold bloo-
NOPE! NEVERMIND!
Stupid stupid stupid stupid and dumb. So fucking pointless.
My personal choice for soundtrack for tonight's episode...
And Melisandre. What's the big deal? She's apparently actually very old? Or maybe she just sold her youth to the spirits of the mirror so Jon Snow will revive? I guess that would.. no nevermind that explains absolutely nothing to me. I guess I'm not smart enough. Whoop-di-doo.
I'm probably forgetting something, but that's all I can think of right now.
Oh, yeah, Ramsay Bolton is still a thing that exists in the show. Thanks for that showrunner.
Edit: Oh, right, did absolutely noone realise that Tristane was on his way to King's Landing at the end of last season? And now, somehow, the Dornish Sand Idiots teleport to his... cabin? Room in King's Landing? And kill him in a disgusting way that reminded me quite strongly of my reaction to the killing of Oberyn. Congrats little shits, you just killed your cousin in a way that is reminiscent of how your dad died. Or rather, congrats writers, you made a glaringly obvious and stupid mistake.

Eldorion wrote:It was okay. Some nice moments. Hard to get too excited cause I know a good deal of where this is going from the set reports and the book plots they've brought back (despite some subplots being past the books completely). Also cause of D&D's track record. But there were no horrendously stupid moments in this episode, just a general pattern of poor continuity and shallow storytelling carried over from last season.
- Spoiler:
I mean, what was the point of the fleet even existing in the first place? And the Dornish subplot ... ye gods, at least it's over, but I can't imagine the continuing adventures of Ellaria and the Sand Snakes will get much more intelligent. "We must avenge Oberyn by slaughtering his family." And so on.
Perhaps the most disappointing thing was the lack of passion I felt, either positive or negative. I'm sure people who are still digging the show will find plenty to love in this episode, but I've clearly fallen out of love, and distance did not make the heart grow fonder, even if it made me less irritable.
Verdict:
<snip>
"But there were no horrendously stupid moments in this episode, just a general pattern of poor continuity and shallow storytelling carried over from last season."
I don't know, Tristane just being somewhere other than where he actually was was fairly horrendously stupid. As was the dialogue and BULLSHIT FUCK DAMNIT
whoa sorry it's making me break into profanity.
- Spoiler:
- OK, but really, how can a person kill their cousin and, without a second thought, make a joke about someone being a greedy bitch all at the same time? This isn't drama, or the representation of "people", or anything even approaching human emotion. It's shallow video-game characterisation, in the worst sense of "video game characterisation" that you can think of.

RE: Trystane
The characterization of the Sand Snakes has been laughably poor from the beginning IMO so I wasn't expecting anything more.
- Spoiler:
- I actually completely forgot that he was on the boat with Jaime and Myrcella at the end of S5 until I was reading other people's reactions after posting my own. I guess what's supposed to have happened is that Trystane stayed on the boat in the harbor at King's Landing for ... some reason (and the Lannisters didn't want to keep an eye on him?) and the Sand Snakes just followed the boat up in their own. How long Trys was sitting in that harbor waiting to get murked, I'm not sure. But yeah, in light of this, I retract my previous statement. This was most definitely a horrendously stupid moment.

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
Fair enough on the poor characterisation from the beginning.
OH GAAAWD I just remembered Olly's smug little face when his NEW HERO APPARENTLY was addressing the rest of the Watch.
OH GAAAWD I just remembered Olly's smug little face when his NEW HERO APPARENTLY was addressing the rest of the Watch.
- Spoiler:
- Ah, I think that we only saw one of the Sand Snakes with Ellaria, so... yeah the other two must have... caught a ship up to King's Landing as well. Too bad Tristane didn't pass his health inspection and was quarantined by the harbour-master!
(By the by, how was that one Sand Snake going to kill him with a Bull-whip? Choke him to death and hope he forgets how to use a sword?

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
I enjoyed your write-up, Forest. Not a ton to add, but regarding the Dothraki
- Spoiler:
- It was nice to have a scene free of rape or murder, but the way in which it happened was just ... what? Since when are the Dothraki so reserved about their sexual violence? And then the Khal, who doesn't believe Dany when she lists her titles, completely changes his tune when she mentions Drogo's name. Why? Why would he believe that when he didn't believe anything else? And more importantly, why did no one notice the very distinctive-looking Targaryen princess who had married the most important Khal in living memory at Vaes Dothrak just a few years prior? Even if Moro hadn't been there himself, surely the story got around.
Re: Game of Thrones [2]
I still lol at the fact that they made Jon's last word literally be "Olly".
Thanks a lot, Dave Hill.

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
I guess we can only hope that Olly's last words will be "I suck".
Or something equally satisfying.

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
I think it would be hugely dramatically satisfying to have Olly back in his childhood home and have to navigate this Gothic horror story of--
No actually if he just disappeared with no explanation I think that'd be best.

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
Mayhaps.
I read a review earlier that claimed that fans were "stunned" by the Melisandre reveal.
Has my heart hardened toward this show so much that I can't feel as I used to? Or was it really not much of a reveal?
Edit:
I mean, I'm an elitist prig often enough as it is, but I feel like the only way a person could be shocked by this reveal is if they thought to themselves, "wow, this person is different than I thought they were!" Apart from that realization, I don't see how this reveal ties into any of the other plots in the show.
Further Edit:
Perhaps I was a little too harsh in my first reaction, although I stand by most of what I said.
Final Edit:
What happens to the hounds? Eh?

- Spoiler:
I also thought it was poor taste. Not because it showed an older woman's body, but because the older woman's body was intended to shock the audience. Game of Thrones? Poor taste? Impossible!

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
well you guys are poo-pooers
I personally LOVED IT!!!! from start to finish so glad to be back in Westeros. Poor Melisandre though, I hope this doesn't mean she has lost her MOJO. I found it profoundly unsatisfying in a good way, and that's good because it was meant to be unsatisfying, it meant that it went too quickly and it means that it leaves me wanting more.

Then you couldn't have really loved it from start to finish. Eh?

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
well that bit was always shit. at least they seem to be wrapping it up so we don't get any more of it. I think they realise it wasn't exactly the most popular storyline.

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
the sad thing is, Dorne was always one of my favorite settings and set of characters in the books. Given that they nailed Oberon so perfectly, why did they have to screw up the rest?

I loved the beginning of that too ... two years ago, before they decided to pretend it hadn't happened for all of last season.
Re: Game of Thrones [2]
anyways moving swiftly on......
I think the Sansa storyline is going to become one of my favourites. I do admire her, she has been bullied and tortured by two of the most horrible people in Westeros, but she has always maintained her Keep Calm and Carry On Stark face even though she was quite clearly terrified for most of the time.

Re: Game of Thrones [2]
I find the Melisandre thing fascinating, has she given up her power or has she been abandoned by the lord of light, or is she having a crisis of existential wotsit and is powering down for a bit? is it depression or is it something deeper than that. I noticed a lot of claptrap about GOT showing an aged female body as if its sexist or something. which is ridiculous. I personally think it shows her vulnerability and her inner ancient nature rather than there for mere shock value. Obviously its shocking to see her so changed, but its quite brave of them to display a characters inner life like that. The last time I saw something similarly powerful was in the film Dangerous Liasons when the Glenn Close character slowly takes off her powder and paint in front of the mirror and slowly strips off her mask to reveal the woman beneath. it was an iconic moment.
