it's not time to make a change
just relax take it easy
your still here, that's your fault
there's so much you have to know
find yourper, punch him all the time
if you want you can post with him
look at me I'm retarded
I was once like you are now
and I know it's not easy
to be calm when you've found something going on
but take your time think a lot
think of everything you've got
you may still be here tomorrow
but I may not
HOW CAN I TRY TO EXPLAIN

Re: Tolkien in General
You know, that makes more sense than anything I've read about the Tolkien Estate's issues before. He said that now "the arrival of a Tolkien blockbuster no longer fills me with the trepidation it once did. I won't be getting another sideswipe from the juggernaut".

Re: Tolkien in General
I've always thought the idea that the LOTR movies tore the Tolkien family apart to be rather silly. Despite the title of that article, it seems to lend credence to the idea that there were some deep-seated issues present that really had nothing to do with Peter Jackson or what anyone in the family thought of him.
Re: Tolkien in General
just found this on tumblr and oh my gosh, FEELS!! this is just how I felt while reading the book, although I couldn't out words to it!
I thought Orlando Bloom did a great job as Legolas in the motion picture trilogy, but I have to say that I prefer Tolkien’s version of the character. Tolkien never specifically gives Legolas’ age, but it seems just from his behavior and some of the comments he makes that Legolas is likely relatively young for an elf. I certainly don’t think he’s over 2,000 years old. He always came across to me as a little bit sheltered and experiencing larger Middle-Earth and its dangers for the first time.
In the first book he’s full of plenty of courage but also a large portion of merry naivete. Over the course of the trilogies, he seemed to gradually become a bit more worldly and serious as the burdens of an Age fell upon his shoulders, one battle came right after another, and unlikely friendships were formed along the way as the young elf came to terms with his own limitations. Eventually, he hears the call of the Sea, as Galadriel had warned him he might. When he first hears Galadriel’s prophecy he assumes it foretells his death (a heavy prospect for an immortal creature), and, really, the sea-longing is practically death for a Sindar or Silvan elf. The adventure of the Nine Walkers is really a coming-of-age story for Legolas, though he’s rightly not even close to the main focus of the tale.
One of the first moments that you see Legolas reacting with dread to the many and unforeseen dangers of Middle-Earth is the appearance of the balrog. Legolas is the first to recognize the beast (except perhaps for Gandalf), and shows real terror in that moment. Part of this, I think, is that had Gandalf failed to stop the balrog, Legolas would have been the natural choice for the second string, covering the Fellowship with his considerable archery skills and his little white knife. No wonder he looks so scared. But the cool thing is that despite his relative innocence Legolas never turned back towards Mirkwood. In fact, he ends the series forging his own kingdom and his own path as the friend of men and dwarves and hobbits alike. Very impressive, I think.
Re: Tolkien in General
A good summing up of book Legolas- whish someone had told PJ that before he made the films though.

Re: Tolkien in General
I know. It kind of got lost in the movie. I also believe Theoden called him lad, which is totally wrong, yes, he's a young (and maybe naive elf, which Orly played good) but when he was in fangorn forest he said the trees there made even him feel young again.. so erm... Theoden is like a toddler compared, though he might have more life wisdom..

I thought Orli played Legolas brilliantly.

Oh you women can't see past a pretty face sometimes. Orli did no acting of note on LoTR. Much of that is due to the character he had to inhabit: he did much better on Pirates of the Caribbean and Kingdom of Heaven, but he still won't be taking home any awards until he suffers a little in life and develops some depth.

It never even made anywhere near the movie. Film Legolas has no development of note at all, no story to tell- a couple of references to his friendship with Gimli shoved in every film is not the same at all as showing us the development of their releationship as Tolkien does (especially when PJ actually then makes Leogolas much more Aragorns mate than Gimli's) and leaves out all Legolas improtant stuff- like the sea longing ect.
What little personality PJ allowed the character to have in the beginning quickly gives way to just antics, shield surfing and leaping about Mumakil.
And there is never any sense from Orlando's perfomance that Legolas ever thinks he is in danger- he leaps about battles smiling away trying to look cool and succeeds only in removing any sense of danger or tension from every scene he is in.
Only Gimli out of the Fellowship gets treated worse by PJ.

Re: Tolkien in General
I'm more surprised by this turn of events than anything else.
Also, POTC is great, Orly and all.

Re: Tolkien in General
There was only one weak point in the original PoTC, it's the scene where the ship crewed by Captain Jack's hirees is in a storm, and Orli's character starts giving commands (as if he would know more about the subject than sea men) and they actually follow his orders. On a human level it's simply unbelievable and about the only flaw in an otherwise perfect movie.

Re: Tolkien in General
I can't say I ever really thought about that scene very much, but I suppose you're right. I grew up with Pirates of the Caribbean in a way. I didn't watch a ton of movies when I was younger, especially not PG-13 movies, but for whatever reason I was allowed to see POTC. I have a lot of fond movies but since rewatching them last summer I've become more and more convinced that POTC1 is one of the greatest adventure movies ever made. It's certainly one of my favorites of an genre. Even Dead Man's Chest isn't that bad.
NB It's nice to have someone here who agrees with me about a blockbuster movie for once.

I walked out of the cinema at this point. Unbelievably bad.
