Re: Tolkien in General
Yeah, POTC4 doesn't really count. I guess all the people who thought that Will and Elizabeth were worthless characters got what they wanted. PROTIP: Jack works best as a supporting character.
Re: Tolkien in General
Im fond of POTC also, great fun, 1st one is,for me,the best. The only thing that really got on my nerves was keep hearing "Im Jack Sparrow", yes, lovey, we KNOW !!, did like Keith Richards being Jacks dad tho.

Re: Tolkien in General
Keith Richards was the best thing about POTC3 & 4. I had the biggest grin on my face in the theatre when I saw that he was back for the fourth movie.
Re: Tolkien in General
I liked the first one.
I thought Orlando made the perfect Elf. Legolas wasnt exactly Mr. Personality in the book either.

I think "On Stranger Tides" was the one I liked least, I felt it "lost something"? As far as I know theres another "potc" coming out, but the last one ended with a "maybe" didnt it !

Re: Tolkien in General
There was actually a much longer storm scene shot forr PotC1, but it apparently got cut to allow for more zombie pirates . I've never seen the footage but I know some of the things they filmed. (That was on our brig.)
Amazingly, there was almost no script when they started shooting. Much of the movie was written pretty much the day before it was shot, and still being rewritten as they shot it! It gives it a much more real feel in some ways I think. The later movies appear to me to have been over-thought.

yepp, Jack is best as a supporting character, although, he was the only positive thing about the fourth one.

I'm not entirely sure what the author's point is, but I for one am glad that Christopher Tolkien is protecting the rights to all of Tolkien's other books, especially The Silmarillion.

Re: Tolkien in General
Not really. I don't think it would work as a film, and I have reservations about the TV series idea that gets proposed regularly. There are some stories within The Silmarillion that could work as interesting films but I doubt they'd receive a faithful adaptation. In the end, while I enjoy The Silm quite a bit, I don't mind if it stays "just" a book. I can understand why others might feel differently, though.
Re: Tolkien in General
I would like to see parts of it filmed. But it would have to be done right. I see it like one of those Japanese Samurai classics i used to watch as a kid, but with better special effects. I think it was called 'Along the WaterMargin'. They all looked like Elrond, it was cool.

Re: Tolkien in General
It annoys me when people try to bash Christopher Tolkien for not wanting the Silmarillion filmed.
It's like these guys forget the role he's played with its publication in the first place.

Re: Tolkien in General
Interesting read, Chris. Lots of different theories for the word's origin.
It's neat that Tolkien gave the word its own etymology, of sorts.

Re: Tolkien in General
Apparently people hated to go for walks with him because he would stop and look at every tree for like 20 minutes.
Re: Tolkien in General
Ah Tolkien. Truly one of a kind.
