I supsect for someone of Tokiens passions having your created words reach such currency they get put in the dictionary you used to work on must have been a career highlight.

Re: Tolkien in General
English is a great language. My main reasons for saying it are:
(1) it takes any word from any language and if it's catchy enough it soon becomes an English word;
(2) you can make up your own words and if it's catchy enough it becomes English - and sooner or later is given a meaning.
Hurrah for the English language!

Is it a coincidence - or is there really something not right with that number --- I absolutely despise it too! Now 768-987654563-XY32 always brings a smile... You can't possibly deny that, Dave.

I can't deny it, Orwell, (though as a purist I cringe at the XY32 part. )
The 987654563 element is really entertaining. Not only is it a descending-ascending sequence with a terminal 3 as a punch-line (LOL!) but it's prime factorization is 7 x 1361 x 103669! You've gotta love that!

Re: Tolkien in General
Of course!
Mind, the XY32 was an attempted bit of humour with (I thought) an ironic alegebraic twist. One does always seek to entertain, but some you win, and some you lose. Mathematic humour (I've discovered) is not Comedy's easiest form to get right.

Re: Tolkien in General
If you'd put a dash p on the end: XY32-P It would have had a much better punchline.

Re: Tolkien in General
I'm not saying it can't work to mix constants and variables in the same joke, all I'm saying is it requires impeccable comic timing.
And I have to say I agree completely with Orwell (as much as that pains me to say it. ) The dash P is a bit heavy handed. If you have to explain the punchline, it probably wasn't that funny in the first place....

Actually both Petty and I are from the Benny Hill school of number-humour, David --- No doubt, Wodehouse is more your style --- Mister Highbrow Numerator!
