just one thing though how do you explain that he is Boromirs brother? they are supposed to look alike. Frodo thought he was Boromir in the book when they first saw him in Ithilien. Denzel is a fine actor, but he dont look like the lovely Sean Bean do he? Shocked and he would have looked silly in a blonde wig.

Suspect

In terms of looks, David Wenham was perfect. I know some people don't like the discrepancies found between the book & film character, but that's hardly his fault! Could have made him a bit sweeter though, like he is in the books! But yeah, he's a great actor. I love his facial expressions, even if he has average lines!!!!

If memory serves Denziel played the Prince in Brannaghs version of Much Ado About Nothing- his brother was played by Keannu Reeves (no I didnt make that up nor should the shock be he is white but rather someone cast him in Shakespeare!) If its good enough for Shakespeare!

If its any consollation Kafria I didnt hate him in Constantine and its one of my all time favourite British comic characters- his 'style' of acting rather suits John Constantines personality (still preferred it if they had left the politics, social comment in it and left the character as an englishman but given all that I still didnt hate him so he musy have been doing something right).

well if Denethor was grumpy with Faramir in the film imagine what he would have been like if he had thought Mrs. Denethor had been playing whoopee with a Southron and begetting DenzilFaramir? mind you the Osgiliath death charge would have made more sense. Shocked

I'm going to agree with Halfwise and say that I could see Denzel Washington pulling off the role of Faramir quite well. Visuals aside (something that Halfwise already mentioned in his first post) I agree that he has the right sort of screen presence and seriousness. I think Liam Neeson might have been able to pull off the role as well but he's probably too old. Granted, Denzel is in his 50s now, but a decade ago I think he would have been in the acceptable age range.

I think Sean Bean should have played Faramir. Actually Aragorn too, if not Boromir and Faramir.

And Celeborn. But that's all.

Well maybe Gimli too. But not Eowyn.

I needed that laugh!

I thought David Wenham did an excellent job with what he was given, but it wasn't Tolkien's Faramir. Yes, Liam Neeson would have been a good choice too if just a bit too old.

Both me and PJ originally envisioned Daniel Day Lewis as Aragorn - see Last of the Mohicans if not convinced. But for the last decade DDL has only worked in Italy, and only with Scorcese.

Who else in the dream cast? Let's not worry about ages or races, this is a fantasy film after all.

• I would have put Alec Guiness as Gandalf, but Sir Ian did just fine.
• Liam Neeson should have been Elrond. Or Lawrence Olivier.
• John Gielgud would have been a perfect Denethor (the REAL Denethor, not the travesty that was put on film. No insult to John Noble, the script he was given was totally cockeyed).

Yeah Mr Noble is sadly wasted- he would have made a superb Denethor had PJ bothered to give him the character to play.

Oh, OKAY, I'll repeat a vent from long ago, 'cause the steam just keeps building up. Every other deviation from the book the scriptwriters at least gave a reason for. So whether or not you agreed with the reasons they do get credit for having some attempt at logic behind what they did.

But they NEVER explained why they *&%$!!ed up Denethor so badly. I got the feeling they actually believed that was a good condensation of the character. So it's the ONE thing in the films I can NOT forgive.

Not sure about that at all- christian rock band for the music? Focusing on Tolkiens Christianising of Lewis? Sounds like a bad propoganda film- I dont mind a proper study of the men and the part their beliefs played in their lives Carpenters biagraphy does a reasoned job of it) but this seems to have a bit of a Church agenda about it.

Nooooooooooooooooooo! WWI - maybe - and Linguistics - absolutely - and the Old Eddas - without a doubt ---- his Christianity is NOT the HEART of HIM (JRRT), but just PART of IT (his Life spent in Faery).

true, but his christianity greatly affected Lewis, and I have a feeling this film is leaning more toward Lewis anyway

A film about Tolkien and Lewis? A doco film, or a drama?
