A grandson of JRR Tolkien and a descendant of Charles Dickens are to collaborate on two new fantasy books for children.
Poet Michael Tolkien, the eldest grandson of the The Hobbit author, will write two novels based on stories his grandfather read to him as a child.
Gerald Dickens, the great-great grandson of Charles, will narrate the audiobook versions.
It tells the story of two children who set out to use an evil enchanter's wishing chain of stones to save their alpine valley, only to fall into trouble.
Michael Tolkien was introduced to the tales in the 1940s and 1950s as a child, and he later read them to his own children.
He said he decided to pay tribute to the now-neglected tale and to "recreate the spirit of the original in new dress".- BBC news

I was reading up on Tolkien on Wikipedia, and I came across this quote of his when someone asked for the rights to make a film script, his response:

"I would ask them to make an effort of imagination sufficient to understand the irritation (and on occasion the resentment) of an author, who finds, increasingly as he proceeds, his work treated as it would seem carelessly in general, in places recklessly, and with no evident signs of any appreciation of what it is all about"

Oh PJ, would you get an earful if he was still alive!

Yep ... and with him gone, his Faithful MUST continue to fight against The New Shadow (PJ), however hopeless the task may seem.

Everyone knows that Tolkien was a devout Catholic but when one tries to shoehorn Tolkien's invented world into strict Catholic dogma one ends up making embarassing mistakes like this:

So death became (by Christ) a Gift to Men - so long as there is faith and hope; while elves could (perhaps) only look forward to 'more of the same' and to be destroyed when the world ended.

Or elves might hope to join Men beyond of the world in Heaven, but (presumably, since they will not have been resurrected) as un-perfected and lower beings than the Sons of God...?

PROTIP: The Elves are also considered to be Children of Iluvatar -- in fact they are His elder children. {{{Sorry if this comes across as harsh, but people who try to use Tolkien as a tool for evangelizing have long been a pet peeve of mine. Rolling Eyes}}}

Good ole Dogbert!

By a strange coincidence the next bit Im currently writing in my gospels discourse is all about titles like Son of Man and Son of God and what they originally meant- and its not anything like what is being implied here- I do wish religous folks would at least do a bit of research into what these things actually meant rather than assuming they already know.

That seems like a slightly more balanced look at the subject than most are. Could well be worth a read.

It does look interesting. May clarify whether Tolkien was a horse lover! Smile
Amazon here shows a used copy for $35.40 which I think is about £25.
I've had books shipped from England and Australia because they're $100 cheaper or more, and the extra shipping is only $10! Very Happy

These are the sorts of things where parent's need to make their opinions known to the school board. If the majority of parents feel this is stupid, it can be changed. Money talks. But if the majority of parents support the ban, it makes you wonder if it's the right school anyway.

Is this your way of asking for another post about grey in horse terminology? I found another opinion from a Rohir at another site, and I might post it here someday...

... although I'm still working on the 'paste' part of 'copy and paste' however. The paste I'm using washes off the computer screen easily enough, but I'm beginning to think this isn't the proper way to do it in any case.

Sure, I'd love to hear more opinions Very Happy

I'm not sure I can help with the copy/paste. I've always assumed it referred to "paste" as in fake glass gemstones, both Copy and Paste implying inferior value to the original. I'm not sure how this would devalue an opinion however....
